We continued celebrating our Golden Wedding Anniversary by taking our friends to an evening performance of the Sichuan Opera in Chengdu. It was actually an extremely unusual variety show/cabaret. We sat at tables and were plied with China tea all evening. Before the show we were invited to try on exotic Chinese costumes for a photo shoot. Then the performance began. It included singing, dance, shadow puppetry, mime, comedy, fire-eating and face-changing!! It was the most unusual performance we had ever attended and extremely enjoyable. It is highly recommended and not expensive for what you get.

I've never seen anything like this. We were led into the opera complex. We sat down and had a pitcher of hot green tea at our table. The show started with traditional music and singing. Next came Chinese acrobats, followed by a puppet show. Then we had a shadow show, and a Chinese violin show. Then came a husband & wife comedy show (even though we can't understand Chinese, we got the idea). Then more acrobats followed by a group of costumed people who did amazing mask changes right before your eyes. This was a dazzling experience, and I wouldn't miss it for the world

This is a fun experience with at least 8 different separate performances including orchestral music, individual string instrument performance, horn instrument, acrobatics to opera (not my favorite), hand shadow puppeteer, a comedy sketch and the fantastic face changing performance. The whole show is about 90 minutes. They serve tea and snacks and you can buy wine/beer - we bought wine. The audience will be 99% Chinese including families with small children.

This is an old-fashioned Chinese show, but it moves along quickly and was entertaining. Worth seeing once while you are in China.

This is a chance to experience the Changing Faces opera. Face changing (bean lain) is an ancient Chinese dramatic art. Performers wear brightly colored costumes and move to quit music. The major thrill is the actors ability to change from one vividly colored mask to another in quick succession to show different emotions and feelings. The masks are painted with different designs and put together by a special transparent thread. It is made to fit each individual. performer. The opera features vivid, humorous narration, singing, and acrobatics. Prior to the performance we tried the art of hand show play and dressed in traditional clothes. It you don't like dry ice smoke sit further back. You can also eat dinner and see a small museum.
