We booked with Absolute Panda for two and half days of panda time around Chengdu. Our guide, Philip helped us build the perfect experience. We volunteered for two days at Dujiangyan and spent the following morning at Chengdu Research Base. Philip knows the staff at the Dujiangyan panda base. He makes sure you will be given lots of panda time. Feeding panda bears was amazing - their soulful eyes express a thousand words.

In the evenings, Philip arranged for us to try the ultimate Sichuan dining experiences as well as a Sichuan opera. Sharing a home-cooked meal that we learned to cook from Philip’s Mom was an extra special treat for us. Philip taught us to play Mahjong and shared his wealth of knowledge on Chinese culture and history.

And it didn’t stop in Chengdu, Philip set us up with tours and travel arrangements in Xian, Beijing, and Zhangjiajie Forest!

If you desire a special, customized tour of China with experienced guides that cater to your needs, book with Absolute Panda!

We chose Absolute Panda for a 4-day private tour of Chengdu because they offered the most innovative and varied set of activities. Lily and Philip, a husband-wife team, own the business and did everything possible to create a wonderful memory of our trip.

Lily runs the office, and was very responsive to our emails. Philip was our guide/driver, and is clever, knowledgeable, speaks English well, and wanted to tailor his talks to our need for detail (NO, don't tell me about Dynasties!) or specific topics, such as current affairs and politics. The car was very comfortable, and Philip made us feel at home, with plenty of water and a backpack of snacks. He brought along Bela, a sweet young assistant, to care for us when he was parking the car. Both were very sensitive to our needs, and communicated well about the agenda and choices we might make.

The highlight of the trip was our day volunteering at the Dujiangyan panda base. It was about a 1.5 hr drive from Chengdu. We were briefed, changed into a one-piece blue uniform (they have a good size range), were given heavy gloves, and off we went to clean out a panda cage, while the panda was in the next cage - don't get too near, don't turn your back! Pandas are cute, but prone to lash out with huge claws after they reach maturity. It was easy work - poop is mostly fiber so no bad smells. We then moved outside to clean the panda's play area, as she watched, anxious to get out.

Then we were allowed to roam and view pandas in enclosures. There were 2 eighteen month old pandas that were one constant tumbling team! We then got to hand feed panda biscuits to a well-trained 2 year old, who would hook her clawed paw on a special tray in order to get something in her mouth. Wow! Up close and personal!

We had lunch with the employees in the canteen - delicious! Then a one-hour documentary on the efforts to breed pandas in captivity and to return them to the wild. Then back to clean the outdoor area and hand feed the panda again. Finally, we make some panda biscuits, checked out the souvenir shop and headed back to Chengdu.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was a half-day visit, and well worth the time. We went super early to avoid the crowds - Philip was great about leaving at 7am when we wanted to beat the rush and 9:30 when we had a little lighter day. There were two rooms of young pandas. We were lucky to catch them in their tumbling act before fell asleep...right where they had landed a minute earlier from tumbling. Too cute! There were also lovely outside enclosures with pandas of various ages and some red pandas too.

Philip even took us home to have his Mom do some cooking for us. Boy, can she chop things quickly! We mostly watched as she created some great dishes, but Philip would have put us to work if we wanted. Beware, one dish was too hot for my palate, but my husband liked it. It is hard to get anyone to make a "mild" dish for me! We also visited the fresh market next door. We have been to many cooking schools, which tend to be better organized that this event, but I learned several new tricks for cooking Asian food in general from Mom and enjoyed the glimpse into their home.

Philip also took us to very interesting Chinese and Tibetan shopping areas, explaining the culture along the way. We visited parks where seniors danced or practiced Tai-Chi or martial arts. The Bamboo park, where we sat and drank tea and learned to play Mahjong, was particularly peaceful on a clear day. We knew how from Chinese friends 30 years ago, and ended up winning most of the hands. Was that luck, skill, or "customer mahjong" with Philip and Bela letting us win??? In any case, we regretted saying goodbye to both of our new friends.

Dear AbsolutePanda Traveler, Great thanks for leaving us such a good and comprehensive review! It was great pleasure working with you and your husband. I have passed your compliments to Philip, Lily and Bella. We keep trying our best to customize the best trip fits our guests’ interests and need, and deliver the best service of AbsolutePanda to every guest of us. We are very gratified with your satisfaction of our service. We also want to thank you for showing such interests in Chinese culture. Your cooking skills are very impressive! The dumplings you made are some of the “best work piece” among our guests. And as for your Majiong skill, we never find another foreign guest who can play better. Bella was amazed and said that you guys are really really good players. Your victory is definitely not just luck or “customer Majiong” :) It was a great time having you and your husband. We are looking forward to traveling with you again! We will make a video of your journey and send it to you in a few days. Hope you love this piece of memory with cute panda in China :D Best, Alvin Liu, on behave of AbsolutePanda Tour Team

We travelled with absolute panda for our trip to Sichuan.

I started trip planning months ago to create a suitable itinerary. Lily was responsive in her communication with me through those months. She also gave me a few good suggestions based on her knowledge of those places.

During the trip, we felt well-taken care of by our guide tingle and our driver. They would check with us if we required anything and if we were ok (as we got car sick along a particularly rocky drive due to road conditions).

Overall, it was an enjoyable trip with absolute panda!

I had 24 hrs between meetings in Shanghai and Kunming, so I decided to stop in Chengdu for a panda experience. I lucked out by finding Absolute Panda, and from the moment their representative met me at the airport, things just kept getting better. It was Father's Day, and when my broadly smiling guide stuck out his hand and said "hi, I'm Leo, I had to laugh out loud. That was my Dad's name. Leo turned out to be the best part of the trip, so knowledgable and warm and engaging, and a veritable treasure chest of information about everything from politics to wildlife, and of course, the pandas. The panda experience was also, a once-in-a-lifetime joy fest,,,,,which including joining other travelers from all over the world in cleaning the panda habitat,,,feeding the pandas, and then of course, the piece de resistance,,,,,sitting on a bench, and "shooting the breeze" with a fluffy, cuddly panda. And on my departing trip to Kunming the next day, even though I assured Leo that I was an expereinced solo traveler, he insisted on having Lily, his girlfriend and also an Absolute Panda guide, accompanying me and making sure I got checked in. I travel, all over the world, all the time,,,and I can assure you, this agency, Absolute Panda, is absolutely perfect.

After reading trip advisor and getting a recommendation from a colleague, I booked a trip with Philip and Absolute Panda. It is the best trip and experience I have ever had with a tour group. Philip really personalizes your trip and provides great suggestions per your requests. His expertise and knowledge about the pandas was exceptional. We were one of the first people in the park as he had bought the tickets ahead of time. I was also able to be the first to sign up to spend several minutes petting a panda (well worth the additional 2000 RMB). It was definitely a highlight. They also only allow 20 people a day to handle the pandas so getting their early is a must and Philip knew exactly where to go to ensure I was able to book a spot with the panda for later in the morning.

After the Pandas, we took a trip to the ancient town of Luodai and ate at a local eatery. It was nice to experience some of the favorite foods in Sichuan and not be at a typical tourist restaurant. The shopping was great and very affordable and it appeared that I was the only tourist there. We also visited Jinli market which is a replica of a Han Dynasty (2000 years ago). It was beautifully decorated for the upcoming Chinese New Year or Spring Festival. The day was topped off by the Sichuan Opera which offered many skits including the famous face changing, folk music, opera singing, dancing and marionettes.

Philip is also an excellent photographer and shared all his photos he took during our tour. In addition, because his camera was so much better than mine we used his camera for the Panda Research staff to take photos of me and the panda Shuang Xin (age 1 year 4 months).

Please take advantage of visiting Chengdu when you are either in Beijing or Shanghai as it is a short flight from either city. Philip and Absolute Panda are highly recommended and I plan to fly back and book his tour company to visit Jiuzhaigou as well as the other panda base. Philip's knowledge and pricing for what you get in an experience can not be beat. Thank you Absolute Panda!!

We are a couple in late 50s who have traveled extensively. This guide company made it to the top of our very long list, with the professional and truly caring assistance of the boss Philip He. Collection from the airport was timely and courteous, the most valuable information flowed at a very digestible rate. His general and specific knowledge as well as his spoken English were of a very high standard. A case in point was our visit to the Chengdu Panda Breeding centre; his arrival at our hotel was prompt at 7.30, drive to centre and we were the 1st in a queue of 3, me my wife and Philip our guide. The centre did not open for another 10 mins, but as soon as it did, with his encouragement, we walked briskly to the far end of the centre. Where we were the only people to view and photograph the youngest pandas. We saw them in their crib, and being carried outside to wake up and play. Philip, sent us on a specific route around the centre while he, with almost 2 hours to spare took up his position, at an unmarked door to be first in the queue to cuddle a panda. What was all the fuss about, we are the only ones here? But, his knowledge was worth his weight in gold. The tour busses arrived, and we were then amidst, groups of 30 and 40 most who had similar intentions to our own. He stood firm, and defended his position against all suggestions from guides and tourists that they might go in front of him. At 10am the unmarked door opened an accepted RMB 1000 donation for each person. He had previously bought these tickets, others paid cash and received an official receipt. My wife, was 1st in, only by his diligence, and 5 people later they shut the door, leaving countless disappointed. Only one person per donation, the staff take your camera, and Philip offered his also, which he had preset to multiple shots per shutter button depression, another good move. The five were taken to a separate room and a juvenile panda, who knew the ropes was lead in and sat on tree looking bench. My wife sat next to him and encouraged by the staff, cuddled up while Panda munched on his apples. Photo shoot over in a very few minutes, off with the protective poncho and back out in to the real world. It was explained to us that they only use one panda at a time and if he or she gets fed up, all bets are off. Those who have had the picture and cuddle great, those who had not, basically tough, they are animals and not machines. The staff, quite rightly, care more about their few precious bears, than all the tourists put together.
Lessons learned: get the best Chinese speaking guide, and do exactly as they say to get the very best from your trip. He also gave us the photos on his camera at no cost and a lot more. This was only our first day, the trip just got better and better under his caring and watchful eye. He is truly devoted to his clients, I can not recommend his company enough.
In writing this I have used part of a previous report, merely to save re inventing the wheel.

Me and my partner just returned from one of the best overseas trips we've ever done, thanks to Absolute Panda, and especially Vivian (our guide), Philip and Lily.

Philip and Lily helped us chalk out a custom 8-day Sichuan itinerary, and were unfazed by the number of questions and changes we sent them. If you are clear about your interests and the pace you prefer, you can trust them to plan your perfect trip. Both were very quick to respond on email. They also helped us with the letter for the Chinese visa. Our impression from the emails was of a reliable and honest company that goes the extra mile, and our experience provided ample evidence of the same.

Our guide Vivian and our driver, Mr. Deng, met us as agreed at Jiuzhaigou with a large 7-seater car. We then set off on a 8-day tour that turned out to be an *absolutely* perfect mix of nature, wildlife, culture and food. We can't praise Vivian enough. Her English is very good and she is a natural conversationalist. She is the perfect tour-guide: cheerful, smart, and superbly resourceful. From keeping coffee ready for us at breakfast (she had brought coffee and a French-press along for the trip), to dispensing hand sanitizer and snacks, she seemed to materialise things for us even before we asked. We felt utterly spoilt.

With Vivian, Sichuan really came alive for us. We saw it through the eyes of a well-informed, well-travelled and sensitive young person from the region. She would dart into shops and show us interesting, everyday things (and the locals seemed amiable too). At the crowded Jiuzhaigou park, she found us quiet trails and spaces to sit. We realised just how many cultural references we would have missed without her.

This is our first time travelling with our own tour guide, and we can't imagine doing China again without one--without Vivian, to be precise. :)

We are both vegetarian and were a bit apprehensive about the availability of vegetarian choices, but with Vivian, it was a non-issue. We ate at small, atmospheric local restaurants as was our stated preference, and left it to Vivian to order for us. She made sure we never had the same dish twice during our trip. We would stop and buy things at local markets and then, at our next stop, Vivian would persuade the restaurant to cook it for us. If we discussed a certain vegetable or dish one day, Vivian would make sure we had it on the next. She shared her favourite dishes with us like a good friend would. In general, Absolute Panda are well-attuned to the global traveller (see the bit about coffee above), and seem familiar with food preferences and even allergies. In fact, Vivian brought along some Western snacks and soft drinks, for us but we didn't need them. We were, however, as South Indians and coffee-lovers, very grateful for the coffee.

In summary, I would recommend Absolute Panda to anyone who wants a real experience of China. About halfway into our trip, we realised that their excellent service made our trip seem luxurious in the nicest possible way. We can't wait to travel with them again!

One note about payment options since other reviewers have commented on it. They were flexible about payment options--we paid the advance via Paypal and the rest by credit card at their office in Chengdu. If, like us, you're from a non-tipping culture, I would recommend factoring in tips for the guide and driver into your costs, especially if you're doing a long trip. We checked with Philip about the usual range.

This just reconfirms the great job that Lily does with planning, and Philip does with guiding. This time we went to southeastern Sichuan to see the Bamboo Sea and the historic carvings in the mountains near Dazu, both well worth seeing. With a stop in Chongqing, including a evening boat tour on the Yangzte, we then went to Hubei Province to see some of the historic and natural sites there, including Shennongjiajie Park. We then went to the highlights of the trip, Zhangjiajie and Langshan parks in Hunan Province. In all, we had three very knowledgeable guides for the first two thirds of the trip, and then met Philip for the Hunan portion. As before, we saw lots of new things, had the flexibility to make changes since it was just two of us, and enjoyed this most recent adventure

Dear Steve, Millions thanks for leaving us such great comments and thank you for choosing traveling with us again! It's always been our great pleasure working with you! And we are very glad to know you had a pleasant trip with us seeking wildlife and photographing. We do appreciate your kind words for the trip and our services. It’s very kind of you sending us back some of your favorite photos you took along the trip. They are among the most beautiful pictures I have seen of Zhangjiajie and the Bamboo forest. You and Rick are great travelers and photographers, no doubt! We hope you enjoy the spice of the hot pot restaurant in Chengdu, and we can not wait to see you again! When we located Philip of ABSOLUTE PANDA!
As many who visit Chengdu, we were interested in the panda experience. Philip is very knowledgable and well connected, so we were able to have the best exposure to the pandas possible.
Additionally, he personalized our 3 day experience, focusing on additional goals, especially viewing local art.
He thoughtfully provided snacks.. attentive to our preferences, and went above and beyond to create for us a wonderful, memorable experience!
(Unlike a recent review, we had no problems paying directly in RMB.. No issues at all.)
His English skills are excellent and learning about his life was most interesting!
We cannot recommend Philip and ABSOLUTE PANDA enough!

I must confess, I write this review because it's ultra personal to me. I've only known about AbsolutePanda for a couple of months but have worked with them very closely with our tour company from the U.S.

AbsolutPanda represents China, like Americans would want a tour company in the U.S. to represent America- with professionalism, pride and respect while their actions speak in a way to that oozes with historical consciousness, both culturally and ecologically.

They take care of their clients and bend over backwards to make sure they are given the trip they paid good money for.

Whether you hire AbsolutPanda for a cultural, sightseeing tour or to see the Tibetan Plateau where you will feel like the only tourist for a hundred miles, you'll leave knowing more about China than you started with, that's for sure. But it's more than that. You will understand what China was and what it wants to become now... and it's a lot more optimistic for the world than people might think.
