We saw the show back in May. This is a traditional Sichuan show which as others have correctly noted is more of a variety show and not what those of west might expect of by way of an "opera". This is a traditional opera show with face changer, hand shadow, Chinese opera, music etc. We got vip tickets and had the neck massage beforehand but you can also get your ears cleaned which is fun to do when in Chengdu. The hand shadow performer was absolutely breathtaking and the opera singers were also amazing. We have such respect from the Opera singers and the costumes after getting dressed up ourselves. Cannot fault the staff who were totally excellent and helpful and offered a table service of green tea and snacks. Well worth a visit and we would happily watch the show again next time we are in Chengdu as it is such a fun thing to see.

The show starts with traditional seating when you an have your own individual tea set
This is not for everybody they sang in their own dialect(though there is english subtitles) It shows the typical chinese novelties of the Yangs female family going to battle, and the monkey king legend .Most guests who dont know the story and the language might find it boring.
The show performed by hand shadow was fascinating by itself, and also the muppet show was excellent. the highlight of course was the anticipation of changing mask with fire coming out from the mouth. It brings forth all the sichuan culture something to learn and appreciate.

The three wonders of Sichuan Opera: Changing Faces, Blowing Fire and Rolling Lights. This is an amazingly great show. I especially like the rapid changing of faces/masks in a split second.

I did it on my own. It was pretty easy. Around 11:00 this morning I took the subway to Tonghuimen Station and got out at Exit A (toward Qintai Road). I made a "U-turn" upon reaching the top of the escalator and walked in the direction away from the other subway entrances. Then I turned left and went through the big traditional archway that marks the beginning of beautiful Qintai Road. After walking for a couple of minutes I spotted a sign for ticket sales for the Shu Feng Ya Yun Opera House. I went inside a shop that sells fancy traditional Chinese clothing, and the lady there spoke English and showed me a seating map with the four different tiers: 140 RMB, 180 RMB, 240 RMB and 320 RMB. I requested a seat in the center front row of the 180 RMB area, which I think was actually better than the 240 RMB seats because it was located on a platform so I could see over people's heads. (The 240 RMB section was on the same level as the VIP seats, so visibility might have been limited. Those seats are also in groups around a table, while mine was more of a movie theater-style row with a shelf in front for tea and sunflower seeds.)
She said I could choose any seat in that bracket...so I guess most people book day-of, and later in the afternoon...? Because it ended up being nearly a full house (this was on a Wednesday). It took place from 8:00 to 9:30 in a semi-outdoor venue inside the Culture Park across the street from where I bought the ticket. (The top was covered, so it would be OK in the rain...but dress warmly.)
They gave everyone free tea and kept coming around to refill the hot water--remove the lid to signal that you are ready for a refill. The atmosphere was casual and lively and the show was impressive and entertaining. I agree with others who said that the face-changing act at the end was a highlight. Some of the performances could have been a little shorter, and of course I couldn't understand what anyone was saying. But I still had a lot of fun and got a feel for traditional Chinese theater. And at the end, I just hopped right on the subway and went back to my hotel! No need to wait around for a tour group.

There are a few places to watch Sichuan opera in town .there is the jinjiang theatre and the shufeng yayun opera house in qintai road.
I opted to go to shufeng yayun for the setting and relative convienience.
Getting there you can take a cab or grab the subway line 2 ( Tonghuimen stop) and talk a short stroll down qintai road..it is a beautiful walk lined with ancient buildings now housing a tanyoto hotpot and jewellery stores.
Buy your tickets at the shufeng yayun shop on your left and then cross the road and walk into the park.the opera house is within the park on the right.
If you get there early, they allow you to have an opera experience where you get to play dress up!
It's a variety show of sorts highlighting various genres of Sichuan theatre, from shadow play, comic skits and of course the famous face- change! Very interesting and funny especially the comic skit cum kungfu act!
If you are ever in emeishan, a friend highly recommends the show there as they are one of the best if not the best in the region.
For those of you who are not heading up to emei, the shufeng yayun offers a really lovely night out in a beautiful setting with dedicated artistes.
Show starts from 8 and is about 90 mins. If you want to play dress up ,try to get there before 7. I got there a little late so only managed to catch the show itself
Tickets range from 180 to 300 rmb and they serve you tea and some tidbits.
You can order more substantial meals such as noodles and dessert.
Don't miss this if you are in chengdu ..

We booked VIP seats, includes a massage or ear torture, we didn't bother with either but got front row seats. Tea was included.
The performances were fantastic, a mix of opera, acrobatics, comedy performance and finished with changing faces.
We arrived and left by cab, easy to grab a cab from the main street.

The music, dancing, comedy, puppets, and hand shadow shows were wonderful and very well presented. I went alone but wished I had my grandsons with me to enjoy all these many aspects of Chinese opera. Don't bother with the VIP tickets, though they are near the stage, all seats have good views and the extras promised, such as a quick massage, were not worth the cost.

My kids loved the show even though I had to explain some parts of the show, they ranked this third amongst all activities we did in China including panda base, lion's garden in Suzhou, the great wall etc. they are 8 and 5, half Chinese, so it is great for them to learn the Chinese culture。location 琴台路, 文化公园 we had some trouble finding it first. Do not pay for expensive tickets。

Timing - They run shows every night starting at 8pm and finishing at 9:30pm.
Show content - More of a variety show instead of Opera: they do have a couple opera scenes, puppet show, shadow screen show, traditional Chinese music, a comedy skit, and the well-known face (mask) changing performance.
Tickets - Book tickets early as the shows sell out. Tickets can be bought on Qin Tai Road. The Opera is actually in the Cultural Park whose entrance is across the street from the ticket office.
Environment - The opera show is outdoors, but covered. So dress appropriately – if it is cold outside, it will be cold during the show and vice versa.
They serve really good tea & small nibbles during the show, which is a nice plus.

I am not a fan of Beijing opera but thoroughly enjoyed the Sichuan Opera. I was glued to my seat for 1.5 hours as I watched acrobats, dancers, and puppeteers.
Note: My photos are not taken from a general admission seat.

Dear fellow travelers! How do we purchase VIP tickets for the show? At the door or in advance? Also, is this theater in the Culture Park?
Thanks,
