This museum is a must see in Chengdu. The artifacts exposed are dated back to the 4-5000 years BC. The museum has the largest collection of ancient artifacts in China. The entrance is free. You will spend there at least 4-5 hours.
There is also a large exposition of puppets. Puppet theaters were and still remain very popular in China. And in this museum you will see all possible kinds of puppets ever used in theaters. I think kids will mostly enjoy this section.
There is a some nice cafe on the 4th floor where you can have rest and drink a cup of coffee.
Btw the museum is organizing different exhibitions from time to time. When we visited the museum, there was an exposition of European artists of the 17-20th cc. So we were really lucky. The ticket's price was 80rmb. Among the works exposed we could see a couple of works of Matisse, Van Gogh, Modigliani and Dali. Yay

This is not on the usual tour stops. But it is a very good museum with lots of cultural icons and historical information. Housed in a beautiful new, large building, it is worth a visit if you have a free day while in Chengdu. Note: they do not ake credit cards in their many shops - cash only or Alipay.

Definitely worth a visit if you are ever in Chengdu. When we visited, the museum had a special exhibition of ancient artefacts from Afghanistan on display on the first floor. From the second floor up the displays take you through Chengdu's history across multiple Chinese dynasties. Interesting to see the similarities between Chinese history and that of the 'west'.

Great stop in Chengdu. Easy walking distance from the center of town. You could spend a lot of time here, but we did about 3 hours. Some of the signage is bi-lingual....most not. But a good historical perspective on Chengdu and Sichuan. Lost to see, many old artifacts. Worth a look....admission is free.

Really an excellent display of materials of the history of Sichuan. Not your typical rather dry Chinese museum. Lively exhibits, good English coverage, great cafe. Do not miss the National Shadow Puppet Museum on the top floor. It is much more interesting than it sounds.

This museum has fascinating exhibits, it's brand new, there is plenty of signage in English. There are kid-friendly exhibits as well as exhibits aimed at an older audience. Right off Tianfu Square, and free, it's a great place to learn about Chengdu's past (for which they have artifacts going back 3000 years) and China's history. Be sure to visit their mascot, the mystical ancient water rhino (named Du Du, you know, after the last word in Cheng du).

This is a very well thought-out museum, with each floor presenting a different major period of Chinese history and crafts and artifacts from those periods. It is highly interactive, with videos, audio and plenty of models to show what Chengdu would have looked like during different dynasties. We spent a good 3-4 hours in the museum, including the time we spent sitting and resting in the very good coffee shop with its view over Tianfu Square.

However, whilst a general overview of each floor and section is given in English, most of the information on the exhibits has no English translation, so visitors without very good Chinese will be somewhat in the dark about the details. This is a shame when certain very visual exhibits (miniature scenes, displays, video demonstrations, etc.) catch your eye and you can't find out exactly what they represent. It is a very new museum, though, so perhaps more translations (or an English-language audio guide) will be available in future.

Full of interesting artifacts and statues, this museum helps you understand China's history well. The main time periods are described in English as well as Chinese the museum is laid out clearly to show you treasures from each one. They have some very cool artifacts and its is free entry so perfect for a rainy day excursion as they are accessible directly from the Tianfu Square metro stop (except on Mondays when they are closed!). They have an easy-to-use locker room opposite the main entrance.

Great museum with interesting exhibits. I learned a lot about the history of Chengdu, and the puppet exhibit on the top floor is not to be missed. I found it interesting that, unless we totally missed a section, the historical overview exhibits went up to the founding of the People’s Republic and then just stopped.

The Chengdu Museum is fairly new. It's spacious and easy to navigate. There's enough English for you to follow the exhibits. Admission is free, but you have to show your passport.
