Datong is a "must go" city if you are planning a China Tour "off the beaten tracks".You'll like landing in a very modern Airport built after 2008 and discover the Ancient City Walls in Ming Dinasty style built by the City Major in recent years . Even being a fake copy, they are impressive. The Datong Hotel is an old landmark, it was completely restructured and is very confortable. Amazing wilde horses bronze-like statues are placed in front of the main hotel entrance. Pictures of Zhou En Lai Prime Minister and other famous Communist Party leaders are in the Hall. A tribute to Zhou En Lai is due for him saving the Grottoes from Red Guards destruction during Cultural Revolution.
About one hour and a half car drive will get you to the Hanging Temple built in about a.d. 500 on cliff of the Mountain. It is an absolutely amazing magic wooden masterpiece of Chinese architecture, sticking on the rocks of the Northern Mountain. Try to avoid the most crowded hours of the day in order to most enjoy this quiet and peaceful place. In summertime it can unfortunately get very crowded but still beautilfull. The 3 Chinese religions are worshipped by monks living in the same Temple, a real example of religious tolerance.
After going back to Datong to have lunch and have a quick look of the nine dragons screen (Ming Dinasty), a hour car drive will get you to YungGang grottoes, one of the largest Buddhist sites in China, with 252 caves and more than 50.000 statues of Buddha dating back to the 5th and 6th century. In a 20 days trip my son and I had all around China, this was one of the Top beautiful places we really enjoied and will never never never forget!

Daytour from Datong. Morning hanging temple, afternoon grottoes. Both world cultural heritage objects.
I visited the two places with Nancy, a very nice and professional guide from "Datong Tours".
Both objects are overwhelming and a must, if you visit China!

Hanging Monastery is a small but very beautiful sight near the city of Datong. It's situated along a cliff at a hight of 40 meters. It's spectacular. A visit to this sights combines very good with a visit to the grottos on the either side of Datong. The grottos are a big and impressive place, and very old. From the period 4 - 6 century.
I visited these places with guide Nancy. Look her up, she'll make the sights come to life for you.
