Best craft beer in Qingdao, if not all of Shandong
Mar 2019 • Solo
Not an easy place to find and in a part of the city (maybe 15 minute walk from the Qingdao Pier) not always frequented by foreign tourists but well worth it if you want a quiet pint.

Strong Ale is always a strong move
Aug 2018 • Friends
If you like craft beers and laid back places with character, this is your brewery to visit. It’s small, but there’s a great selection of beers, of music, and quirky art to entertain anyone. This little gem can be found in a quaint little cobblestone street in the German concession - it’s almost possible to forget you’re in China when you sit on the bench outside the entrance. Our favorite place in Qingdao! Lastly, Strong Ale: Beijing wouldn’t mind if you came...

Outstanding Craft Beer in Qingdoa
Sep 2017 • Friends
This place is a gem! I recommend the Zier IPA, but they are all great. Qingdao is more than Beer street. Check this place out. Not to mention the cd/vinyl selection rocks.

Fantastic Craft Beer in a Funky Artsy Warehouse
Jan 2016 • Business
I had known about Strong Ale Works (SAW) for over a year but have never had the opportunity to stop by in previous visits to Qingdao. This time however, I decided to make the time and was well rewarded -- in particular thanks to John's Citra Pale Ale, Belgian Ale, and Stout!

The graffiti-style SAW warehouse door hides a brewery that John sometimes uses as a party space, but the brewery is not trying to be a taproom nor a bar. You walk into the space and have mash tuns on the left and fermenters on the right, a man-cave-esque work space with tools and brewing books toward the back, and a loft space above. The walls are painted in a distinctive Communist era art depicting images of brewing beer, which is SAW's distinguishing look.

I had gotten in touch with John the morning I took the train in to Qingdao confirming that he'd be around, and when I showed up at the brewery he welcomed me right in, offered me tasters of his three beers, then said "help yourself from the taps with whatever you like, they're all 25 kuai a pint." What a deal - I know quite a few craft beer places in China and none of them offer a deal like that for quality like that - NONE.

As a homebrewer in Beijing and someone who's looking to make a more serious move into craft beer in the future, I had tons of questions for John on his experiences. By the end of the night I formed a great impression of John, his brewery, and his beer, as well as a few tidbits of advice on how I can make my move.

Anyone interested in straying off the beaten path and then being very well rewarded for the effort, Strong Ale Works is just the place. (Plus it's only a 10 minute walk from Qingdao's beautiful walkable coastline.)

Very interesting experience, but well worth it

Searched for this place in the early afternoon and it took us quite a while to find it. When we finally did locate it, it looked closed. There were no lights on and no body present. We managed to speak to some of the workers at the gallery and found that there was someone there responsible for pouring and managed to get a couple really good beers.

Sorry we weren't here when you came by. The brewery doesn't really have regular business hours but if you would like to visit sometime just contact me in advance. Wechat: strongaleworks

The Best Brewery in Qingdao by Far
Let's start by making it clear that Strong Ale Works is not longer in Daxue Road. The brewery has moved to a much bigger and better location on Laoshan suburb, meaning there is more room and MUCH more beer. Strong Ale Works is now located inside the 138 Art Warehouse on the corner of Hailong Road and Hongkong Road (Xianggang Road). It is difficult to find at first, inside an apartment complex, but well worth the effort. Daxue Road is OUT, Laoshan is IN.

Next, John Herrington, the owner of Strong Ale Works is probably the most knowledgeable brewer in Qingdao, so if you are after great beer, he is the guy to go to.

John is always willing to share his knowledge and passion about beer with other people, and has been integral in supporting the growing home brewed beer movement in Qingdao. As a home brewer myself I have been lucky to work with John on beers on numerous occasions.

He also helps many other brewers in Qingdao set up and run their own breweries, so in a way he is the unofficial source on craft beer in Qingdao, the beer capital of China.

If you are in town and can locate a bar selling Strong Ale Works, consider yourself lucky and enjoy a pint or two. If you are interested in making beer yourself or learning more about craft beer and how it is made, find the shiny new location and venture there for a beer and a chat. Be friendly and you will find the kindness reciprocated.

Best Beer in Qingdao!
Jul 2014 • Family
John the brewer has re-invented beer culture in China's beer capital. Fantastic place to sample his beers (e.g. Double Hoppiness) and situated right in the heart of the city's old town (Daxue Lu, which is a great place to wander around). Highly recommended.

Qingdao is not only about Tsingtao
Feb 2014 • Solo
Even though the city of Qingdao seems to revolve around the local big brand, fortunately, there are places like this little brewery on Daxue Lu. Its name is actually Coolvat and not Strong Ale Works, but its strong ale definitely does work. The place is friendly, cozy, has a lovely ambiance, and most of all, beers are, though not exactly cheap by Chinese standards, quite good. A gourmet's must-see.
