Located in Zhongshan Square, Shenyang, the centerpiece is a giant fiberglass statue of Chairman Mao, surrounded by statues of his followers, including soldiers, peasants, and students.

Visited here as it appeared on what to do in shenyang in 48hrs. Well, it's just a small square you can take picture with. Activity can be done in 5mins, maybe coz it was scorching hot when we visited hence didnt really stayed long. Moreover there was no other visitor when we visit on an afternoon.

Amazing statue of Chairman Mao. It looks very impressive at night time when it is well lighted and there are not many people. Be careful when you enter the square, the local traffic is not very well walker friendly.

There is a huge Mao statue in the middle of this round about near the CBD (it's called a square but is not actually square). In the evening you see lots of activities - dancing, singing, English corner, skipping rope, calligraphy with buckets and mops. Great place to see Chinese culture and chat with locals even if you don't speak Mandarin. The roundabout is in the middle of a very busy intersection of about 8 roads and Chinese drivers do not give way to pedestrians even on zebra crossings so take care when crossing the road to get to the middle. Walking distance to Taiyan street and public buses.

Beautiful, big 26,400 square metres, open square, originally built in 1913, and after that has been rebuilt many times. Since the renovation of 1996, it has become a musical square of culture. The square’s epoxy-made, nine metres in height, statue of Chairman Mao Zedong centrepiece was erected in 1970. He was China’s communist revolutionary leader, founding father of the People's Republic of China, and also a noted writer and poet.

Best to visit in the evening, when musicians, dancers, people performing Tai Chi exercises, and street vendors are out, and the square is full of activity.

Chairman Mao’s quotes include:

Women hold up half the sky.

All political power comes from the barrel of a gun.

Politics is war without bloodshed, while war is politics with bloodshed.

All reactionaries are paper tigers.

Let a hundred flowers bloom, let a hundred schools of thought contend.

Complacency is the enemy of study.

We will not attack unless we are attacked; if we are attacked, we will certainly counterattack.

Let’s produce ample food and clothing with our own hands.

The young people are the most active and vital force in society. They are the most eager to learn and the least conservative in their thinking. This is especially so in the era of socialism.

The membership of our party is necessarily a small portion of the Chinese people. Only if that small portion reflects the opinions of the majority of the people's, and only if it works for their interests can the relationship between the people and the party be healthy.

Also doubling as a round about, the square features a huge statue of Mao Zedong. The square is surrounded by big banks but it's minutes walk to nice area to done or stroll. At night its pretty nice. Note some older people may dance there. Be sure to look out for the everlasting traffic.

I loved Zhongshan square, it's a beautiful peaceful square. It's a must see square in shenyang. At night it's beautifully lit up, and people play badminton and playing around the statue.

This is a neat place to walk around on a summer evening. You'll see dancers, skippers, caligraphy water painters, tai chi, and lots of other Chinese night life.

The square is named after Sun Zhongshan (Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of Republic of China, 1912-1949), but the revolutionary style statue shows Mao and his soldiers (you may find locals inline skating or art students practicing sketching nearby). The square itself is small, yet buildings around it are much more enjoyable to watch, and there's a story behind them :)

This area is now branded as "The Zhongshan Road Historic District"(as shown in my photo), as it used to be the affiliated region of the Japanese railway "company"(South Manchuria Railway Zone). This region, along with the Railway station, was planned and built by the Japanese colonizers since 1910s. From this square, you can see a bunch of European style buildings, mostly banks or government buildings of eclecticism style (nowadays often keep their original function). To list two examples, a former Korean bank (established by the Japanese and used as a tool to colonize in Northeast China), and Dahe Hotel (used to serve high-ranking Japanese officials, now Liaoning Hotel). Walk around the square, you'll find brief introductions to those buildings (Mostly in Chinese), but at least you'll know when it was built :)

The urban planning in the South Manchuria Railway Zone is very interesting, it was directed by the Japanese in the early 20th century, and basically kept intact up to this day. If you are really into this, you'll find some Russian features or relics there as well. Most importantly, unlike those copycats, these are all authentic.
