If you're interested in the history of the city, this place is right for you. It is the main historical museum of Dalian, and it is not called "Dalian Modern Museum", but simply "Dalian Museum". Because of this inaccuracy, many do not attach importance to this landmark, and it somehow gets lost among others. Meanwhile, it is a museum with a beautifully crafted, large-scale exhibition telling the history of the city and peninsula from the opium wars of the 19th century to a united China after 1949. Its halls can be of interest not only to tourists, but even to historians and Chinese scholars. In addition, on one floor the museum holds unique temporary exhibitions on Chinese antiquities and classics. When I was there, the exhibition "Southern Edge of Empire" was on display, featuring the archaeological rarities of the ancient South Chinese kingdom of Nanyue and reconstruction. I was thrilled. The museum also has a good gift shop.

Floor 2 is the self-guided tour with a talking speaker triggered as you move around. Sometimes gets mixed up and repeats the same segment. Easier than someone translating. The 3rd and 4th floors rotate exhibits. Currently a Chinese puppet history. Interesting but not exciting. Reservations required in advance.

I went Dalian on 18th September to visit my son who is working in this north eastern city now. this is my second time visit to Liaoning Province. The first time I went to Shengyang a few years ago. My first impression when I step out of the airport is Dalian is a clean and orderly modern city although it has a long history. To truely understand a place, museum is undoubtedly a place one must pay a visit.
The Dalian museum is situated at 沙河口区会展路10号. It is very near to the famous Xinghai square. it is housed in a very modern building. Its opening hours are from 09:00 to 16:00 . itclosed on Monday.
visit to the museum is free, however you must show your passport before you are allow entry.
Basic displays are artifacts from period 1840-1949 as the maindraws and it is subdivide into 7 sections.
1. Port development and naval defense.
2. Sino Japanese war
3. Russian lease territory and developement of port and city.
4. Russo Japanese war and Japanese occupation.
5. Influence of multicultural exchange and fusion.
6. Chinese revolution.
7. liberarion and formation of the peoples republic.
There are also places dedicated for art and joint temporary displays.
I strongly recommend this as a must visit place in Dalian.

Just off of Xinhai Square in Dalian is the Modern Museum. Expecting Modern Art, I found the museum to be anything-but when I visited. They were doing construction in several areas, so there may be other exhibition areas that were inaccessible to me, but I saw no modern art. Of course, in a land as old as China, perhaps what I saw was considered "modern." They did have a very nice collection of very old bronze work and ceramic vases and dishes, most likely from the Qin Dynasty. Unfortunately, they had almost no English in the exhibits, so I needed to rely on my basic knowledge of the subject matter to understand what I was seeing. Other exhibits in the museum included an exhibit on nuclear power and many old devices from the early and mid 20th century, including a car, typewriters, staplers, clocks, etc. It was an eclectic mix, to say the least. I enjoyed the exhibits, although I could not linger while reading and understanding the real value of the artifacts I was seeing. The personnel were friendly and one of the entrance people, who spoke fairly good English, made me feel very welcome.

This museum tells modern history about modern China in addition to various art exhibits.
Most visitors are surprised to learn the atrocity committed by Japanese from late 19th Century to the closing of the Second World War.
This museum is FREE and near the subway station.
For those that plan to visit Lu Shun, please note the memorial tomb of the Chinese massacre by Japanese troops are closed on Tue. It is just up the hill from the long distance bus station.

This museum has so much potential that it was disappointing to find that only one, of four, floors was open. This housed an interesting collection of photos and objects on the history of Dalian, but captions and explanations were only in Chinese. Yet I still recommend you visit this museum and combine it with a visit to Xinghai Square.

September 2019 - seem to be fairly major interior works going on and the place is closed. It was a fairly long subway ride, so disappointing. On a Sunday, there was a very small craft market in the courtyard.

This museum might help you kill an hour. Nothing terribly special here, unless perhaps you read Chinese, in which case you might get a bit more out of it. As the name of the facility suggests, it covers Dalian modern history, mid-19th to mid-20th century. Basically, the museum is an overview of the Chinese struggle against imperialism and the glorification of the CCP. Best thing is -- it's free and has aircon.

This is a good place to go in Dalian. You need 1,5h to visit it, basically the museum has 5 floors, but only have things on 2nd floor. Everything is in Chinese, so you need to rent the Audio Guide, is 30 rmb and 200 rmb of deposit. We liked the place, even I am not a person that likes so much visit museums.
