This was someones home who appreciated having garden areas outside each window and along the footpaths of his home. There is a nicely planted pond area around which the house is built. Learning that the Garden opens at night with a variety of traditional Chinese art performance, I and my friend were highly excited. What could be more wonderful enjoying traditional art performance in a classical garden! It is such a great idea!
We arrived there at almost 8 pm and the so called housekeeper of the Garden urged us to hurry to join the first performance after we had paid the entrance fee. We and some other tourists were led to the first parlour in the middle of a singing performance. When it ended, the whole group of around 30 to 40 people moved to another parlour to enjoy the second performance and the first lot of artists would perform to next group of tourists. There were a total of 6 or 7 traditional performances that night, including singing, dancing, opera, instrumental etc. Each lasted for about 5 to 10 minutes. Theoretically you can go at any time and you won't miss anything. But my advice is you better go no later than 8:30 pm because they don't expect tourists to go so late and the artists are off duty very early.
So the idea is really great and the setting is perfect. However, we were so disappointed at the poor quality of the performances! Sorry to say most of them were below standard and the artists were not serious enough. Some performances were even poorer than the junior students at school! The entrance fee for this night visit is 100 CNY, which is quite a big amount in China. (30 only for daytime visit) With this extra money collected, they should be able to recruit high standard artists or at least performers who are more serious. I wonder the personnel think that foreign tourists know little about traditional Chinese art and it is already enough to fascinate them. If this is the case, I would say as a Chinese, I feel greatly ashamed! Please take this opportunity to show foreigners our real art!

Another visit we made while we were in Suzhou was to visit this small garden
As it is a small garden everything is proportional: the smallest bridge in the world, a small lake with small fish... it´s very nice. The pavilions have a normal size.
We had a great time in this garden.

We understand the Cultural Revolution destroyed this garden and most has been rebuilt. But there are bits and pieces of the original. Take your time.

The Master of the Nets Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in Suzhou. The maze like effect and the beautiful layout are truly memorable. However, I still give it a low rating.
The reason being, at least in summer, it is so crowded with tour groups with guides screaming into megaphones that a visit is claustrophobic and unpleasant. The whole point of a Chinese garden is tranquillity and contemplation. Both were completely missing on my visit, drowned out by buses disgorging endless tour groups and their megaphones.
My advice is to visit one of the less well known gardens.

This was my first visit to a Chinese Garden and I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the place. At turn and corner, there was something interesting - the ancient paintings in the gallery, the rock formations and the plants. The place seemed heavenly. The architecture was truly appealing and the presence of the water body rendered a sense of peace. One could spend hours at the garden. I could see many lovely couples around the garden spending some intimate and beautiful moments together. I think this is what this place does ... it makes one fall in love with nature and tranquility.
Any one who is in Suzhou should visit the garden, just to see a beautiful landscape garden of the old world.

We reached Suzhou in the evening so we decided to go for the night performances in Master-of-Nets Garden, saving the Humble Administrator Garden for the next day.
To get to the place, you'll have to go through an alleyway. We had to wander in the dark for a couple of minutes before we found the arch leading into the garden. The night performances were really good for the culturally inclined. The price of 100 yuan was a bit steep but the commentary and shows were quite worth it. Starts after 7.30 pm; they will take small groups through various halls and gardens to enjoy the traditional Chinese singing and musical instruments.

A personally wouldn't travel this far from Shanghai just to see the garden but combined with a visit to the Tongli water town we are glad we visited. Lots of nice photo opportunities, though it can get crowded.

Beautiful area to tour. Very zen. Must have been wonderful to live there although you would have to have been rich.

I just visited the Master-of-Nets Garden yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The crowds were not bad at all around 11am although the humidity was extreme. I enjoyed the fact that these gardens had many hidden hooks and crannies, and that you could feel relaxed although you are in the middle of a large city. The rocks, water,plants, and architecture combine to make a wonderful spot.

One of my customers took us here to see the beauty of Suzhou. I had no expectations going in. Located on an old street, this old family home is right out of a movie. Very delicate and well cared for garden and pond. One of the gardens was copied in the NY Metro because Nixon loved it on a visit in the 70's. So we were told. The furniture and wood used in the structure is impressive. It only takes an hour or so to cover well. On a non busy day, I could spend much more time relaxing and taking in the atmosphere. Unfortunately this garden is well established on the tourist path, so it will get busy. We were lucky since we visited on a very rainy June mid week morning. Look for the paintings with Tigers. Apparently they sold in an auction for 600 million RMB? Oh, there is also a store to buy artwork and enjoy a coffee. A must visit for history and culture.
