There is also a few gardens which together with the bigger ones in Suzhou belong to the UNESCO World heritage ensemble. Watertown is beautiful, plan for 4 hours which is plenty of time to take pics, have a nice lunch in one of the many cafes and restaurants or just enjoy the scenery.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 26, 2023

Xitang is in the next province, not far away, and it's bigger but not as well known. Tongli had lotus flowers for sale, 10 rmb each, or about 2 bucks, and hand-made decorative umbrellas that are also functional. The 20 minutes boat road on the canal system is beautiful and relaxing. There's a very charming boutique hotel in the middle, beside Selecto Coffee, and here's the surprising news: it isn't as crowded in the summer as at some other times!Visited July 2023Written July 20, 2023
- Kevin F3 contributionsAccess to Tongli and homesteadsTongli at Suzhou is a nice ancient water town for relaxation and leisure. There are a lot of homesteads to be selected and stay for couple of nights. Most of the homestead are comfortable, clean and located within the scenic areas. It is best to have WeChat apps for easy communication and directions with the owners if you intend to stay in these homesteads. Tongli has a lot of cafes, local style restaurants and convenient shops to choose from. It is no worry about the amenities and foods. You may walk along the canals and bridges to enjoy the ambiance of water town. You may take the boat ride and visit few Suzhou style gardens especially the "Retreat & Reflection Garden." The access is easy. Take Metro Line 4 at Suzhou Railway Station to Tongil station, and take public bus of 725 outside the exit to South Gate of tourist centre of Tongli Scenic Areas, (only $2 RMB bus fare) It is also quite convenient to visit Zhouzhuang Water Town (better scenes) by taxi which will cost about $50 RMB one way.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten November 13, 2023

Took the metro train here and then took a 10 min ride on a tricycle bike to Tongli from the station. The driver just dropped us near the town and not at the entrance and we had to walk and asked for directions to reach the entrance. Actually, there was a cheap bus service from the station to Tongli which we took when we had to return to the station. You had to pay an entrance fee to enter this town, more like a village. Not so cheap. Crowded with tourists. Very commercial old town and not so authentic. We had the feeling it was all geared for the tourist. Found a better old water town in Shanghai which was more laid back and entrance was free.

We did not find the water town as exciting as we though we would and the area is very touristy. If you have the time and really want to see it then do go but we felt that there were better things to see in Suzhou.
To get here take the metro to Tongli station (about 1 hour by metro) and go towards exit 10 to find the ticket buying booth. Tickets cost 88 RMB per person and from there you can take a shuttle (included with the ticket cost) for 15 minutes to Tongli Town. If you go here expect to spend an hour or two.

One of the very best scenic areas for numerous reasons. A little touristy, but walk off the beaten path and see the "real world water town". People are friendly. Plenty of diners to eat at, numerous hotels/rooms for rent, several tea & coffee houses and shopping as well as historical sites to visit. Have green qr code, your passport, and 100 CNY for entrance fee. Recommend avoiding weekends & holidays, if possible go on a weekday. Plan to spend an entire day. Recommend staying a night to enjoy both the day & night scene. The area is clean, well maintained. Numerous restroom facilities available. Worth the 2 hour drive from city center. This water town has a calm, easy going vibe. Wear flat comfortable shoes, the walkways & streets were paved with numerous size pavers/stones & can be a little tricky in areas and would not recommend strollers, too bumpy. The tree lined canals are beautiful.

Between Shanghai and Suzhou, a short train ride from Suzhou, Tongli Ancient Town is like a Chinatown inside a Chinese city, and it's like stepping back into the past, around a thousand years, without losing some modern technology. Take your camera and take thousands of pictures without worrying whether or not they will turn out to be fantastic. A photogenic water town, without question. It's the reason Suzhou is called the Venice of China and Venice should be called the Suzhou of Europe. Half a day, minimum, is needed. It's a cool place on a hot day and a warm place in winter. Take a gondola ride down a canal. Don't miss the secret garden!

Tongli Gu Zhen is a scenic and nice place to hang out. We stayed the night in one of the old buildings which is modified to become an inn. The host are pleasant. me and wife had a night stroll and it's safe. Our travel date is 4th-5th Jan and its winter time. Some of the lighting may not be fully turned on as the locals call it the "low peak" period. However the main light attractions at night are still very delightful to watch. woke up in the 2nd morning and the breakfast shops are awesome. There are variety of food to choose from even for lunch. The buildings are nicely designed. Definitely worth the time there!

The hotel concierge recommended to visit Tongli which does not disappoint.
It's less crowded and commercialized relatively as compared to the more well known Zhou Zhuang. It's accessible by subway and Didi cars.
I found it to be easily navigated within small town (thanks to the abundant signage and maps). Nice to see the canals and the bridges. There are a few nice gardens hidden throughout the town too.
It's a nice place to hang around for few hours, taking photos and have a cup of coffee by the canal.

We had some difficulty finding the water town. We purchased entrance tickets from the ticket office at the bus station but the directions we were given there were worse than useless. Fortunately a helpful local person took pity on us and helped us get to the water town area.

The Chinese Sex Museum is no longer in Tongli. The Tourist Administration representative from the Tonglin site says that it has been moved to Hainan.
Tongli Town was nice, but if you are in Suzhou, you can get a similar experience in their old town. A new subway line has opened in Suzhou (Line 4)...last stop is Tongli. It cost me 7 rmb. Exit the Metro from exit 2 and take bus 725 for 1 rmb to the tourist site. 100 rmb to enter the old city region.

Was the Metro available? It seems that Line 4 should go directly to Tongli from Suzhou Railway Station but I note that travellers recommend the bus.

The metro goes to Tongli . But the old town and gardens are 5km away. Get off at the last station in Tongli and then you can get a shuttle bus ( and entrance ticket) from the metro station. The last shuttle bus back to the metro station was at 5.30.

Hi,
I saw your review for Tongli, China and I want to ask a suggestion as I am going there solo next month. Is it easy to get around in the city, especially the old city area, if you don't speak the language? Is it walking distance from the station and between each of the attraction spots?
Thanks

Hi Yohannes,
I just saw your message and at first it seemed like you were asking me your question as I had posted a DIY tip but now I see that there are tons of other answers.
The only interesting part of Tongli for a tourist is probably the old town. And yes, you can do it without a tour, private guide or taxi.
You can't walk from the subway station to the old town. It's too far. Once in the old town, you can walk everywhere. It's small.
I tried posting the link to my review here but TA won't let me put in a link. So here is the text:
"At each attraction, there is an information board explaining the significance of the attraction.
If you’re in Suzhou, getting there is easy with the metro. The entrance ticket, if bought at the tourist service costs 88 RMB instead of 100 RMB. This includes free shuttle to and fro.
On arrival at Tongli metro, from platform look for exit 10. Once you exit the turnstiles, right in front of you is the Tongli Tourist Service (you’re still underground in the metro station). I bought my ticket there and they gave me a pamphlet in English. The lady didn’t speak English but I said “Tongli men piao” meaning entrance ticket. You will be told where to catch the bus but just in case they’re too busy and you don’t understand, walk to the opposite end of the subway hall to Exit 2 and take the escalator up to the road. There should be a coach there. They depart every half hour. It’s a direct service.
The coach drops you off at the North Parking Lot entrance. To get back to the metro, go back to the parking lot and look for the bus with no. 4 (= Subway line 4) displayed on the window and ask. It’ll be parked with many other tourist buses. Departures are every 30 minutes on the hour and at half-past.
As for the visit in Tongli, just follow the map.
I didn’t have lunch there but there are several western coffee places and a western restaurant was indicated on the map. Otherwise join the locals."

Hola mig T!
¡Buena estancia!

2) Intend to take bullet train from Shanghai to

3) Or is it better to spend 1 night in Suzhou.

Hi,
it depends how much you want to see in Suzhou, that will decide how long you would stay. I would stay a night or 2 as visiting the water town would take up about 5-6 hours and some of the tourist places will close by evening.
I would visit Hengshan, Tiger hill and ibrowse the night market around Pinjiang. Throw in a boat ride along the grand canal if you like to see the place from a different perspective.
Just a note, the D and G trains are pretty similar with a difference of about 10mins in total traveling time from Shanghai to Suzhou and vice versa but the D trains cost half the price of G trains if you're riding in first class cabin. Timing wise, you have more options with G trains. I would recommend arriving at Suzhou station rather than Suzhou North station.
Hope this helps.
Cheers...

Take line 4 all the way to Tongli, exit 2, and you can pay to get a bus into the ancient town. The 90 RMB bus fare covers the town's entry fee (normally 100 RMB, I believe) and gets you into several of the museums in the town.
