Heritage Canal
May 2019
We came by metro and took a short walk to the visit the grand canal. There were many smaller tributaries around this canal. You can take boat rides to slowly enjoy the area or you can walk. We walked and it was quite enjoyable. Congested with tourists though, like most tourist sites in China.

Winter visit
Dec 2019 • Family
History goes back few hundred year BC. It was effort of few million people to connect Hangzhou and Beijing on water 💧 . Winter time is not bad for cruising but hot 🥵 Sumer could be refreshing spending on boat 🚣‍♂️

Part of the Grand Canal UNESCO site ...
Nov 2019
The Grand Canal is a expansive UNESCO site, with the waterway stretching from Beijing to Hangzhou, passing by Suzhou along the way. In Suzhou, the city's waterways are part of the Grand Canal, and many areas along it are filled with historical sites and architecture. There is a walking trail along the whole waterway surrounding old Suzhou town. The different parts I saw in the city were really pretty, both in the day and at nights.

Pro-Tips for Visiting Gritty Grand Canal
Nov 2019
This is a popular bus tour spot but it is not clean and shiny. It's a little gritty here. Lots of locals. And that makes it fun. There is some walking to do. It is very busy. Find someplace to eat and linger awhile. It's worth a visit.

Very interesting to see China's Venice and the old heritage buildings lining the way
Oct 2019
This area is full of history. This World Heritage Grand Canal is the biggest man-made waterway in world. 6 million people dug it taking 6 yrs, in which time half died in the process making that Emperor very unpopular with his people. It is 1394km long and about 3m deep. It extends north to Beijing and south to the ocean and Australia!

It is certainly worthwhile catching a boat to ride up and down the canal to see the original old buildings from the canal side. There are older generation people still living in these original small 200 yr old homes, without running water or toilets. Amazing!

The bridges that cross it give you a good vantage point to take photos along the canal. The streets lining this section are full of interesting shops for crafts, materials, souvenirs, food, cafes etc. Do take time to try a local riverside restaurant. it's worth it!

Not quite Venice
Nov 2019
Part of my group tour experience. The canal tour was a fun diversion. Interesting to see the traditional life along the canals. Water was fairly clean considering people were washing clothes in it. Beautiful lanterns were hanging along the way. Arched bridges were great photo opps.

Interesting to see how they live
Nov 2019 • Friends
I don’t know about this being a romantic trip, but it is certainly educational. Better if you can get a local guide to tell you about it. Interesting that they don’t have bathrooms (public bathrooms used), and all the ways the canals are used. You see many are not maintained, even with the UNESCO funding, and others crumble but have AC. it is a nice ride.

Beautiful Scenery

While I didn’t ride in a boat, I walked by and nearby the beautiful canal and enjoyed its scenery and shops.

Grand Canal
Oct 2019
Everyone has heard of the Great Wall, but the Grand Canal is as spectacular both in engineering and in cost of human lives. We had an English-speaking guide so that is important. He knew where the western toilets were (very helpful) and took us to “off the way” spots with great food, shopping and seeing native peoples doing their own thing which is better than going to shopping centers. It was here I felt I saw the real China...absolutely loved this part of our trip and I would do it again!
