Just a small garden not a tall tower
May 2019
When we visited Tongli water town, there were many signs showing the direction to the pearl tower. It was misleading as it was only a small garden with no real tall tower. We didn't spend too much time here as other areas were more interesting.

No tower
Jun 2018 • Couples
it is no real tower, but a small garden in Tongli. Although it is a nice garden, it is not as good as other gardens in Suzhou. If I'd go back to China, I would not spend almost a day in Tongli and would devote that time to Suzhou or Shanghai (you have to visit at least a garden but you can do that in Suzhou)

Not to be missed

This area is part of the classical gardens of Tongli which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is easy to find, just follow the tourists.

A Delightful Experience
Mar 2018 • Couples
Pearl Tower is my favorite scholar’s garden in Tongli, far better than Tuisi (Retreat & Reflect) Garden in my opinion. Built during the Qing Dynasty, it’s located on the north side of the old town. It’s much quieter than Tuisi (Retreat & Reflect) Garden, especially the Rear Garden which offered such a refreshing experience when I visited in March 2018.

Be sure to follow the sign (in English) to the Rear Garden. A little lovely canal comes into view – at one end is the original owner Chen’s archway, which opens to a bigger canal. It’s a stately monument which must have witnessed many departures of Chen’s family from this private port. And the other end offers a resting place for the family’s ornate boat, sadly decaying… Enter the Rear Garden near the boat and be pleasantly surprised. The garden is a meditative tableau of pond water churning with brightly colored koi, and surrounded by Lake Tai rockeries, and pavilions. Another highlight of the visit was the family’s opera stage (also part of the Rear Garden). Stunningly beautiful structure! Go on the stage and be impressed by the intricate and colorful ceiling! Sadly, I noticed a few pieces of rotten wood and split wooden beams.

With the crowd at the main residence, the garden was so quiet when I was there. It was absolutely delightful to experience the beauty, tranquility, and serenity!

Pearl Tower ????
Oct 2017 • Friends
When in Tongli Town you will see several signs giving directions to the Pearl Tower. It's very difficult to locate as there is no actual tower just a model made up of pearls located in a residence on the 2nd floor of one of the halls. The residence also has a garden area.

Pretty garden.
May 2016 • Family
Visited in Jan 2017. Explored this beautiful garden on our second day in Tongli. It was a misty day, which added on to the romantic feel. Make sure to spend some time slowly enjoying the pretty and calming views.
The pearl 'tower' is almost a misnomer, as there is no 'tower' for one to go up. But on the first (or second) floor of one of the buildings, there was a wooden tower model laced with pearls. There's a story behind the Pearl Tower, which once was a family treasure and given as a gift.
Now, you can view the tower through a cabinet, and there are people selling pearls there as well. Only purchase if you know something or two about pearls, as it looked like a tourist trap.

Good visit for ancient architecture
Nov 2016 • Family
I visited this as part of the Tongli ancient town experience. It has vast grounds and I was able to still see the old building, gardens and grounds of this place. One thing about the attractions here is that the old feeling of the place is kept, the "unpolished" display and views of the ancient buildings, sandy paths. The only thing missing is a misty atmosphere and old ancient robes to transport one back to the early days.

Beautiful Garden in Tongli
Jun 2016 • Couples
The pearl tower is not a tower but a beautiful retreat almost all the way at the end of the road from the old Tongli town entrance. We had a map but had to ask a local (in photo) to help us find it. The calm atmosphere and weeping willows over the canals with the birds chirping were so peaceful and heavenly. I wish we would have had more time just to hang in this gem spot. As tourists we were busy in Tongli rushing to take it all in. This garden was really divine.

I have always been a fan of Chinese architecture - so no surprise I would visit as many towers and temples.

Massive residence and Garden

The name of this is a bit misleading as there is no tower but it is still worth taking the time to admire the halls and buildings as well as the beautiful gardens.
