As a tourist unfamiliar with local Tibetan religion, the temple is a fascination. It is built in 1585. From the religious monuments to the cultural experiences, the temple is littered with colourful flags and brightens up your day. But the descriptors are difficult to understand for non-Tibetans, despite a dual English Chinese language descriptors. It is next to the Dazhao temple and surrounded by tourist shops around the area. Overall, it is worth visit for tourists who know little about Tibetan or Buddhist culture. You can understand a bit more after visiting.

I have visited many Buddhist temples in China, the Xilitu Zhao Temple is not extraordinary in the sense it is different from the others but it is very clean and was not crowded at all. Nice place to go for a couple of hours if you are in Hohhot.

Before entering this temple building, there are strict rules to observe e.g. no photography inside the temple. I was told that this temple is the oldest and largest lama temple in Hohhot. It is restored and well known for its beautiful ancient structure and still active today. Before you walk out of the temple, spin the 'prayer wheel' and make a wish. Who knows your wish might come true!

Try to visit both this one and the Dazhao Temple across the street. Both are active buddhist worship places.

Stumbled upon this temple by accident, was on the bus to another temple and wasn't sure what stop to get off at, saw the large white marble pagoda from afar and hopped off the bus and I'm glad I did! The temple is still an active place of worship for tibetan buddhists and the architecture is a fantastic blend of Chinese and Tibetan. Well worth a visit if you're around town.

In the temple, there is an old Tibetan style pagoda which is really beautiful with exquisite details.

Definitely worth visiting, the temple was almost empty, when I was visiting it and very tranquil. Took a tour and learn a lot about it.

I found this temple to be more authentic than the other temples. Monks were willing to talk to you and the inside of the temples seemed more old.

On the other side of the main road is this large Lamasery which is worth a visit if only to see the candle-power in one of the back prayer rooms. My (sneakily taken) photo doesn't begin to capture the dichotomous senses of tranquility and power present in that high-ceilinged chamber, but trust me when I say there was certain magic to that room that could have had me believing I was somewhere up a remote mountain in Tibet. Our visit came in the middle of stroll from Wuta Si to Dazhao Si and was 30rmb well-spent. Plenty of colourful altars, statues, drums and prayer wheels to turn. Real (I think) monks ranging in all ages, some chanting (though perhaps not as whole-heartedly as at Dazhao) between chatting on their cellphones... progress, I suppose. It's another place that's being renovated and those garish colours are evident in a number of places; at one point the odour from the spray-guns was overpowering.
