Went here with my gf after she heard about it from some polish people also traveling china. She really enjoyed Hoover dam so was very excited to see this place. We didn't want to do a cruise so we went there independently from yichang city center. To get there from yichang center, first go to the three gorges tourist center.... More

It takes around 2-3 hours to walk around the dam. There are great spots to take pictures but not a lot of information around. Just bits and pieces. Unfortunately, the fog/pollution was very high when we went so all of our pictures have a veil over the scenery.

This Dam is huge. It is pretty impressive to look at and the story that goes with it is pretty interesting. Go up to the top and you can get a birds eye view of the Dam and the locks. Going through the 5 locks was amazing. I cant believe how close the ships were. The locks filled up so... More

But worth the visit, even in the heat. This dam has achieved what it set out to do in flood prevention and then there is water for irrigation, clean hydroelectricity and cotinued carriage of enormous tonnages of freight. I was fascinated by the locks and how close the barges fit the lock and climb up to the lake

There are, of course, different views about the pros and cons of the whole dam project but you can't fail but be impressed by the scale of the achievement. The visitor facilities are still beig developed, but there is a good view of the dam and the ship locks.

If your in the area, and have the time it's worth a visit. We did day trip visits to the Yangtze River on a boat cruise, one day to touristy trap, with great views, the next day further up the river to three gorges dam. 240RMB/per/day. Picked us up at the hotel to the port. Note: this is not an... More

We had the Dam tour included with a CITS tour we took. It was a 4 hour cruise and the Dam tour with transportation and a meal. The Dam tour itself was a little underwhelming to me. It was really hot that day, so that may have been part of it. For security, there was no inside tour. It was... More

I was impressed by the size of the dam, and the anount of concrete that was needed to build it. So large and spread out over a huge area. The road trip to and from the dam has some imprssive scenery!

A must for any civil engineer! Also include the locks with cruise vessel: unforgettable. Do not leave China-Yangtze without this experience!

Part of our Yangtze cruise was a visit to the Three Gorges Dam site, there is a strict security policy, bags extra being checked and guards every where. The dam is controversial due to the number of towns lost and the number of people having to be relocated, but on the positive side it controls floods, power generation, navigation and of course tourism. The site...
