We took a 1 day "Two dams & Xiling Gorge" cruise from Yichang. All the cruises and dam visits are controlled by a listed Hubei company and therefore all the tour fees from any agents in Yichang are uniformed. We booked the tour a day ahead and arrived at the harbour in the early morning. Being a public holiday in China, the place was packed with mostly local people in groups each assigned with a tourist guide.
The cruise took half a day and went thro Herzhou shiplock dam where you will experience the water locked followed by the rising water for the cruise to reach a higher level. It was an amazing experience. Such a marvel to build this super structure that not only serves as irrigation and power generating purposes, but also tourism.
Beautiful scenery with rock cliff lined up both side of the gorge as the ship cruised on.
At about noon time, the ship docked at Sandoaping wharf and we can the option of visiting cultural village, Sanxia Dam or other activities for the remaining half day.
Yichang cruise is a must experience.

The Xiling Gorge is one of the highlights of the three gorges cruise itinerary, but you'll pass through it fairly quickly and I'm not sure 3 days is needed for the couple of hours highlights that Xiling offers. If you're into cruising, I'm sure you'll love it. If you just want to see the gorge, arrange an excursion tour for a couple of hours. That's all you need. Just make sure you don't book a President Cruise, no matter what you decide.

This was the first gorge area we went through coming fromWuhan to Chongquing. The scenery is amazing and because the river starts to narrow, you are able to view a lot of various boats using the water for transportation. Very peaceful and tranquil.

Xiling Gorge is one of the beautiful three gorges you'll see on your cruise itinerary upstream from Yichang, but it does go by pretty fast. Have camera ready!

Xiling Gorge is the most eastern, ie the most downstream, of the three gorges passed through on a Yangtze River Three Gorges Cruise. This gorge is located between the Yichang dam (Gezhouba) and the main Three Gorges dam. Of the three gorges viewed on this cruise I feel that the Xiling gorge is the least spectacular, it is however the location of an excellent side stream tour to the unique scenery of the Tribe of the three Gorges which highlight both the Ba and Shu cultures, and was a highlight of the whole cruise.

This was included as a side trip on my second trip downriver from Chongqing to Yichang. We disembarked from the steamer into scull-like boats that were alternately pushed by pole and pulled by rope by ethnic natives wearing nothing more than the barest of loin cloths. It was very interesting and gave us a view of ethnic China that tourists rarely see, as well as aquinting us was many facts of Mao's long march and other historical details. This was two hours well spent.

The scenery is the only thing going for the trip. We were dropped off here first thing and boarded the ship, which was clean. However the lack of seating was atrocious. There were plenty of seats in general, however you had to pay nearly 300 yuan for a seat if the very minimal number of benches were taken by seat hoggers placing their multiple bags on seats. This was a very hard day for me as I'm just going 7 months pregnant and managed to sit down for a half hour only of a 4 hour trip. Make sure you take plenty of your own food and drink as the meal doesn't provide or offer drinks and the food is "double dipping" into various veg and noodle bowls. I don't have a big appetite but thankfully there was a stall outside offering drinks and ice creams as the limited food on offer would have killed me given an hour or so. The tour guides speak no English and make no attempt to include to you or even try. We speak basic chinese to get along and still found the guides extremely unhelpful. Thankfully the amazing scenery was the one winner!

I took a 5 day Yangtze river cruise and started from Yichang and this was the first gorge we came to. The scenery is amazingly beautiful. There can be some fog but as you get further along it dissipates. I highly recommend seeing this be prepared to take a lot of pictures
