I was lucky to visit this museum a few times in Zhengzhou. One time I was lucky to get an English tour. You can learn a lot about the past of the area. Henan is one of the oldest parts of China and you can't help but feel that its a shame more of the history has not been preserved. This museum is a great start though.

Right in the centre of Zhengzhou is the Henan Museum, and if you are in the city you must make time to visit it. Entrance to the museum is free though you have to queue at a ticket office to get a smart entrance card.
Henan is often spoken of as the cradle of Chinese civilization, and when you go round this museum you can see why.
The museum is not too big but there is much to see, the ancient bronzes being particularly impressive - probably the best anywhere in China. Produced over 1000 yrs BC, the detailed designs, and amazingly advanced technology they had then takes your breath away.
The exhibition of jade artifacts is also mind-blowing, particularly the full body suits made of small rectangles of jade linked together by fine gold wire - stunning.
Everything is well captioned in English so you know what you are seeing.

The bookshop on the ground floor exit has a particularly good well written English language book about the museum and its treasures, it was published in 2009 and at 172RMB is worth every penny - it is much more than just a guide to the museum, lavishly illustrated, it is a really interesting history of Chinese civilization; you will have to ask for it though, as it is not easy to find amongst the other publications.

The Henan Provincial Museum is a fabulous resource that provides rich insights into more than 5,000 years of Chinese history. The displays are beautifully arranged in the magnificent new building, and explained in both Chinese and English. The collection covers every major period in Chinese history from prehistory up to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Some of the earliest artifacts--oracle bones--that document the dawn of Chinese civilization were uncovered in this area and are on display at this museum. As of 2008, admission to the museum is free Tues-Friday. Every day, there is a 30 minute performance of ancient Chinese music (40 RMB charge in 2008). This is one of the best history museums in China and on par with the National Palace Museum in Taipei (which contains most of the Chinese national treasures that would have been on display in Beijing before 1949).

Henan Museum in Zhengzhou is not big. But the museum houses more than 130 thousand artifacts with a few of them dated 8000 years ago. We spent 90 minutes at the museum. The museum is very organized and full air conditioned. Hiring a good guide worth all our money spent. For us, the guide had done an excellent job to walk us through 8000 years of history in 45 minutes. We even bought a complete guide of the museum (河南博物院-带你走进博物馆) from the museum bookstore with CNY25. By the way, most of the information inside the museum are available in both Chinese and English.

Zhengzhou itself doesn't have many things to do, but this museum is definitely a must if you are here. If you are interested in Chinese history you will like this place. It's a fantastic place to spend the whole day there.

This is a bit of a gem compared to the rest of this rather glib city - well laid out, super English translations, well air conditioned, interesting AND free to boot. If you do just one thing in Zhengzhou (and to be honest, there’s not much else to do), spend an hour or two here.

The best thing about this museum the free entry. But not much you see for that. There is three building. Two flat building, and the Pyramid. In the right there is some exhibition about writing, mostly only chinese, not much of interest. In the left there is soem interesting excavation stuff from the nearby cities Anyang, Luoyong, Kaifeng, etc. It is about one hour trip. It worth the travel if you interest about chinese feudal ages. I am a historian, so yes I am interested. And in here everything detailed in english. BUT when I was there the Pyramid was completely closed down. Why? So maybe worth a second trip to enhanced my review.

I arrived at Henan Museum as part of a guided tour, little did we know that the museum is closed for renovation. There is a small exhibit to the side of the museum showing ancient pottery. However, it was only a small fraction of what would be inside the museum. I am not sure when this renovation is to be completed, however until it is complete I don't believe it is worth the visit.

I hope one day to come back when it is renovated!

We were disappointed when we arrived at the museum, as it was closed for redecoration, but the annex to the main building had some interesting displays. My interest is mainly in the Neolithic period and it was uncanny how the stone tools were so similar to the ones found in Europe and UK.
I wouldn't have thought there would be any communication of toolmaking ski;ls between China and Europe, but maybe the necessity for using them suggested the best way they could be shaped.
The bronze age weapon exhibits were also similar, but ornaments and cooking vessels far more advanced and ornate.
Quite an interesting visit in spite of the initial disappointment and free entry. Pity the Chinese don't maximise on their resources, by providing a tea room or cafeteria.
