Great for history buffs

I really enjoyed my visit to this archaeological site. I love Chinese history so thats a good reason to visit the earliest known dynasty's walled ruins. My visit was made all the more interesting with the company of a Chinese friend who use to play on and around the ruins as a child. He was pretty much my personal local historian. I believe to enjoy a visit to this archeological site you need to read and appreciate the Shang Dynasty. I have been to the Henan Museum, several sites around Luoyang and to most sites in Anyang so this visit just capped it all off for me.

Pleasant surprise in otherwise dull city
Apr 2015 • Couples
Though Henan province and the surroundings of Zhengzhou have many historical & cultural attractions to keep all China/history buffs requited, the city itself has few such attractions (aside the museums).

So my surprise was even greater when we stumbled across the Shang Dynasty Ruins (商代遗址) which are visible sections of an ancient wall dating back to the Shang Dynasty some 3500+ years ago....amazing.

The wall is impressive in size, but there is unfortunately not a lot done to bring more tourists to this area, nor to high light the wall and other sites of historical importance in the area. (one local resident said the site was barely worth visiting !!!).

Anyway, please go here if you have time and happen to be passing by.
You can also visit other temples nearby (Ling Xing Gate 欞/棂星门& City God Temple).

How have they survived!?

Despite all of the construction work these 2000 year old ruins still exist and are worth checking out just to get a tiny insight into Chinese life.
Children love playing here; couples meet in secret; locals have heated discussions and clearly BBQ plus snack food are consumed.
Access the ruins from Shangcheng Lu and there are steps to the top of the northern section. South of this road it's more of a scramble but alright if you have sensible shoes.

We walked the wall!
Jun 2013 • Friends
What's left of the Shang-period walls surrounding the ancient city of Zhengzhou are interesting to walk along, primarily because you are walking on such old history. A section of the wall is fenced off so you can easily visualize what it might have looked like when it was 30 meters tall. It was interesting to look down on old building courtyards to see people practicing Tai Chia, students playing basketball, gaze at old temples, and imagine...

I would not make a special trip to Zhengzhou just to see the walls, but if coupled with a visit to other sights, like the Henan Museum, it's worth a short stop. Access to the walls is a steep dirt path, not something to do if i has rained recently.
