I was with a group of people who were visiting Zhengzhou for the first time and this is a logical place to take them. While Zhengzhou is a large city, Erqi Tower and the surrounding streets/shops are like the central hub of the city. The tower itself is nothing really special but is a nice landmark for the city. We went on a Wednesday night and it was filled with people. It did remind me of Times Square in New York.
Around the Tower are a dizzying array of shops and bustling activity. There were also loud, continuous announcements from shops and bright lights that seemed to be competing with each other for who is the loudest or the brightest. This is really a place of sensory overload. Any street you go down though, you can find a shop or restaurant for just about any sort of taste or budget.
A fun place to go but maybe only for a couple of hours. Others may be able to take the sensory overload for longer than I did!

The tower isnt nearly as big as it seems in the photo. You go look at it and that's that. There are plenty of places to shop and eat nearby including street vendors. Couple of tidbits: if you go to an ATM further away from Erqi, it wont have English prompts and Google is wrong when it points to the "zhengzhou east railway station." The zhengzhou east railway station that has high speed rail going to Beijing is 5km east of that. Look at the satellite view, if the tracks are going east-west, then that is not the station going north to Beijing.

Striking monument from the outside and you can climb up steps to the top but don't wear thongs as I wasn't allowed inside.

This Erqi Memorial Tower was built in September 1971. It has 14 floors and is 63 meters high. It is the memorial of the Erqi Strike which occurred on February 7, 1923.
This strike was by Jinghan Railway Workers. This simple assembly held by the China -Jinghan Railway General Union evolved into a strike escalated into a bloody conflict. This strike was more serious than others and it highlighted the huge gap between the rich and the poor and the poor working conditions in China in the 1920s.

I recommend to visit this place twice - in the evening for stunning lights photography and lively shopping atmosphere, and during the day for free entrance to the tower. Opening hours are Tue to Sun, 0900 to 1700hr, Mon closed. Need to show passport in order to gain free entry.
I visited the tower in the morning and it wasn’t crowded. Tower has 10 floors. Starting from 3rd floor, there is a exhibition hall up to the 10th floor. The halls depicted the history of the railway lines, the workers’ strike and protest on 7 Feb 1923 (hence the Chinese words 二七), the death of these martyrs and the commemoration of this monument tower.
The 10th floor also provide a great view of the city. 30 mins is sufficient to cover the tower and have a better understanding of its history.

During the night time, these towers really look beautiful from a distance as they are well illuminated.

Although it is the memorial of the Erqi Strike (二七大罢工), which occurred on February 7, 1923, the building looks too modern. I would rate it a "one star" out of a scale of 1-5.

At night, these towers really look impressive from a distance as they are well illuminated and dominate the skyline. However, up close, they really are just ugly, concrete blocks made to look like pagodas. In the day time, they really are very dull. You can go up the towers, but I didn't bother. I'm Zhengzhou looks the same from 30 feet up as it does from the ground.
