Nice well-maintaned beach, but the June waters are too chilly for us. Being relatively close to Beijing, it is a favourite getway for many Beijing citizens. But on our visit on a sunny but cool June weekday, there were only a few beachgoers, and even fewer in the water.

It's the only seashore that you can go from Beijing for 2-3 days without extremely expenses. Though prices at this place are rather high.

This place is a refreshing escape from Beijing life. Less polluted than the major cities, and it really does have some beautiful beaches. Steer away from the main beaches and go for a walk - don't go to the paid beach, just hang out at the beaches around the paid beach - they are a lot less crowded (surprisingly!) and quite relaxed. There are so many Russian tourists here that the Chinese actually spoke to us in Russian, and didn't know any English - most menus are only in Russian or Chinese, so be prepared!

People I beg you not to visit and support this resort and zoo!
The Chinese are known to be the most Animal unfriendliest people in the world!
And this zoo is a very good proof of it!
Zoos in general are backwarded and a crime for Wildlife Animals, but this Zoo is even TORTURING and BEATING their Animals in the most cruels ways!
Everyone who support and visit this zoo is a culprit too and also guilty for the Animals suffering!
Please have a heart and avoid it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You better go only from beginning of June, not before. April is still cold and May you might be lucky or not but anyway evening might be fresh so not pleasant. I was there on may 24th and nobody took the risk to go the sea. Everywhere it's written in Mandarin and Russian, it looks like we are near the border with Russia but not at all. The walking street in the city is just 10 minutes walk to the sea and you can find cheap shop and restaurant there. Some bars but they were closed in May, waiting for july-august which seems to be the peak season. The beach is good but you have to pay 8 yuans to access in some parts.

We came here knowing that a. we will not be able to swim in the water b. it's a Summer resort and might be emptyish and c. not to expect too much of a Socialist/Soviet/Communist summer retreat of the Middle Class. Those things in mind, we were impressed.
The beaches were not that crowded (early April) and the walks we took along the sand were very pleasant. The sea is indeed dirty, and there was an area where there were a lot of dead starfish (which was very sad) and open sewages. But considering both of these things it wasn't that bad.
There are a LOT of writings in Russian, barely anything in English, but that wasn't a problem as one of us speaks Russian and most of us speak Chinese. I can imagine though that the trip would have been a lot more difficult without either of those two languages.
There is a military camp nearby and the soldiers went for runs during the day and we enjoyed watching them.
The food in the main streets is a bit overpriced, especially as the sea-food comes from live tanks. We did however enjoy watching all the different sea creatures, including those we had never seen before, swim in the tanks (even though we knew their lives would end very soon).
There is one restaurant which translated from Russian and Chinese is called "Restaurant of Sea Products" and is hidden behind one of the big shopping malls in the centre, which is absolutely AMAZING. They cover the tables with plastic, give you plastic gloves, cook the food in plastic bags and you get to eat your food without chop-sticks or knives/forks. It is a brilliant idea for seafood, and we ate there three times in two days. It was also the cheapest place in town, and yet the tastiest as well. If you don't arrive there before 1130 though you will have to wait a long time before you are seated.
All in all we had a great time, MAINLY because we knew what to expect and what to avoid.
Note: Taxis are difficult to find sometimes, and they will try to bargain a set price rather than turn on the metre reader. We got scammed once.
Last note: If it is smoggy... you won't have such a good time. We were lucky that it was smoggy only on the first day.

the town is known and great for one thing: the beach. It is dead all year except summer when it becomes little Russia. Nice architecture. The beach is clean with no waves so it is great for kids. Lots of climbing rocks to explore. The free beaches have showers, restrooms, etc. The taxis don't like to use their meters so negotiate a price. Go to the wall. It is great! and Conch Island. For $7 you can have a round trip 15 min each way by ski lift to the island going over the ocean. Great peaceful experience.
