Great place, the far end (the temples on the mountains) is the most interesting place, use the shuttles.

Most people go to Shanhaiguan to see the great wall. I decided to get out and check a few other places while I was here. The Five Buddha Mountain National Park shows up as "Wanshaoshan Scenic Area" on google maps. It is also where the sunlight through hanging cave is located. It is also the same area as Mt. Longevity. This is China, so things are confusing if you don't know Chinese (like me).
I got a pass that lets me take the buses around the park. They drop you off at various points. I found a nice trail that runs along the river, lots of tourist were having lunch there. I then too a bus up the mountain pass to the 5 Buddha's area. I guess the 5 Buddhas aren't done yet, all are in various states of being crafted into the mountains.
If you look up though you see these small huts on various points leading up a mountain (9 huts in all). This is a trek for those not afraid of heights. You go up very steep stairs, and on paths with no guard rails. If you can get to the 1st one, the rest are no worse, but physically you must be fit. The views of the surrounding mountains are spectacular and really a treat. I had lunch up there and relaxed away from the tourist, since most don't venture that high up.
The way down was easy, just a few sketchy stairs to navigate. The scarriest part for me was the crazy bus driver going back down the mountain. Just try not to think about his driving and you will be OK.

I have visited the place 10 years ago as they start to carve 5 hzge Buddha statues into the mountain and thought 10 years later they must be finished. But i was wrong. Everything is rotten very much and not maintained. High prices and crazy bus driver who do not stop for a nice photo. All in all very disappointing trip. The same for the rope way which connects the great wall, the park and the Yanzi lake which is out of operation and half dismantled. If you want to spend money only without seing great things that is the right place. BTW, on bottle drinking water 0.55 litre 10 RMB says it all.
