The First Pass of Great Wall
Dec 2019 • Friends
The history of the First Pass must be understood with a good guide. The building structure, the landscape & even the name board has good history and how was the doing began. The ancient Chinese was just fascinating.

Fine place for time spending
Jun 2018 • Friends
It's a old town wall with Chinese's hilight, ‘天下第一关’ which means first gate under heaven. But if you don't have any historical passion, it's just a city wall.

Excellent experience

It was neat to visit the beginning of the wall. Laolongtou is really why we came to the area. Definitely make your way around the fort when you come.

Awesome Visit!
May 2018
All 17 of us enjoyed visiting Shanhaiguan Gate Tower. The walk was good and our own tour guide was a lady we got to know several years ago, whom we met at a conference. A renewal of friendship bonded us even more. We had flown 6 hours from Malaysia to be in Beijing. Meeting up with her and seeing the Great Wall for the first time, was really pleasant and unforgettable. There were not many tourists on the day we visited. So that was also very good for conversation and laughter.

Nice walk

Same same in terms of the gate towers (if you've been to any others in China this offers nothing new) but the walk around the Wall is good. For half of it we saw no-one which is refreshing in China!
The traditional town is a joke- one shop deep & those are either closed or selling junk. It's new-build too - very similar to one's all over the country

Historically significant by over touristy
Aug 2017
This location is very significant historically. This is the first gate in the Great Wall of China. This is where the Manchurian armies were let through to take control at the end of the Ming dynasty.

However, there isn't really much of the history on display. The whole area has been taken over by tourist stalls selling tat and people dressing up for photographs. There is little on display to educate the visitor about the significance of the location.

Holy Moly (3)
Mar 2017
And the 3rd out of 3, finished.

Finally I took my time to visit the Pass itself.
I directly claimed the city Wall at the north-west end and just could head for east (rest was under construction - very unlucky today). However, to walk up there was very nice and you have a good look around. The weather was clear enough to see the Great Wall going up in the hills nearby. So I was walking and walking until they stopped me and I missed the gate :).
I returned and had a close look: very small for such a well known Pass. I thought it was bigger. Ok.

Nevertheless, this was the place where the Masurian passed the Wall 1644 and fought together with the lay Ming soldiers against the rebels. With that background you feel touched here.

The Great Wall
Sep 2016
This is the last gate of the Great Wall. A lot of history behind the tower. Laolongtou (Old Dragon's Head) and Shanhaiguan Gate Tower should not be miss if you're travelling north east of China.

incredible tourist attraction
Nov 2016 • Couples
It's worth a visit from Beijing. I took a train to Qinhuangdao and stayed at the Shangri La. Book a taxi at £10 an hour and off you go to Shanhaiguan. The Gate Tower, the First pass under Heaven, the Dragon's Head and the part of the Great Wall at Shanhaiguan Pass were lovely to visit. I went in early November and had the places to myself. OK to save money take the train all the way to Shanhaiguan and find a cheaper hotel, but either way, please make the effort. Good luck.

not many people or attractions in mid Dec.

First pass under heaven winter season ticket is 15RMB per person.

We caught a high speed train from Shenyang to Shanhaiguan, which took about 2.5 hours. From the train station you can easily follow the signs to make the short walk to The First Pass Under Heaven - no turn-offs, just keep going ahead till you reach the wall! Please ignore the persistent taxi touts!!! Put on a poker face and keep walking. Don't flinch when they make sounds as though you are going the wrong way or are somehow in trouble! You can identify the touts, they often hold display folders with photos of sites they offer to take you to.

The round trip from Shenyang is very doable in one day, but remember to take headphones with you as the noise from other travelers (even in first class carriages) is deafening.

In mid-december there were very few other travelers at the site. This meant you could get a really great photo. Many of the attractions and also sections of the wall were closed off and unavailable. This included the museum which we had hoped to see, and a section of the wall we wished to walk down which is evidently open at other times of the year and looked to have fabulous views. There was also nowhere to get food or drink, so pack a picnic!

If you are in Shanhaiguan for a short period of time and can only visit one - laolongtou or the first pass under heaven, I would recommend going to laolongtou, a really unique part of the great wall.
