Yunfeng Bazhai Scenic Spot is located at 18 kilometers south of Anshun city. It consists of eight villages including Yunshantun, Benzhai, Leitun and Xiaoshanzhai... Every village is built with their own village wall and stone watchtower. Inside of the stone stockade wall, there are Jiangnan residential-style courtyards. Walking in the village, you will see stone tile covers, stone houses, stone streets, stone walls, moon wells, old style houses. It is not only nice to live in, but also good for street fighting. It is praised by scholars as "the last fortress in the cold weapon era".
Among the eight villages, Yunshan Village and Benzhai relatively completely preserve typical village buildings and folk customs, and are listed as national key cultural relics protection units. Yunshantun is also a "Famous Chinese Historical and Cultural Village" named by the Ministry of Construction and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.

I always wanted to be in the midst of the golden sea of canola flowers. The most famous in China is located in Luoping County, Yunnan, covering 13,300 hectares of canola flowers. It blossoms most beautifully from every Jan-Feb.
However, I missed the Luoping Canola season. This April, I decided to catch the candola flowers in Anshun County (安顺), Guizhou with my friend Patricia. Anshun is located south-western of Guizhou province. We took a 6hrs train from Kunming north-east direction (running at 50-60km/hour). We plan to visit Yunfeng Eight Village (云峰八寨屯堡) and Canola Fields (油菜花)
We took a 14:00hr train, supposed to reach by 20:00hr. It was raining towards Anshun hence; we were delayed for 2 hours in the train. By the time we reached Anshun, it was already 22:00hr.
The following day, we took a local bus to Anshun East Bus Terminal and purchased a ticket to Le Ping (乐平). The bus driver was kind, to tell us where to stop in 乐平 and walked through a backdoor. We need not pay our entrance fee (RMB 70) to Yunfeng Eight Village.
It is a very small town and we strolled 45 minutes around 云峰八寨屯堡. She is traced back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and has been fortified by stone constructions.
The 屯堡 women's costumes and accessories are beautiful. Knee-length robes with wider sleeves are typical of Tan Bao women's dressing styles. The robe's neckline, cuffs and front are embroidered with colourful designs. They are very good in their embroidery.
Mostly old folks still stayed at 八寨屯堡. While the women were busy, the old men were enjoying their ciggie.
Thereafter, we asked the locals for directions to the canola fields. It is apparently a 10 minutes’ walk upwards from the main entrance of Yunfeng Eight Village. We were absolutely awed by the beautiful golden sea of canola flowers fields. She is so beautiful.
We were happily taking photos of the canola flower fields the entire afternoon and took the last bus at 6pm from 乐平 to Anshun. The day, we will head for Huangguoshu National Park.
Tip 1: You can buy train ticket online via www.ctrip.com from Kunming to Anshun. Remember to bring your passport. If you are late, the ticket you purchased are changeable within the first 2 hours.
Tip 2: Bring snacks & instant noodles for your long train ride. There is hot water in the train. They also sell local Chinese food via push cart.

These 8 villages are close to each other, and mostly are preserved very well. Most houses are made of stones.
Stone slabs were used to make roofs for the house. Villagers are the descendants of the soldiers from 600 years ago. They still keep on their traditional costumes, hairstyle, language.

We hired a minibus in the Anshun minibus area near the railway station for 200 RMB. We visited Yunfeng Tunpu village first (about 30 minutes). It's a bit confusing to navigate the route unless you speak Chinese. (We speak a little.) We hired a guide at the entrance for 80 RMB for 2 hours, which turned out to be a good decision. The route winds through the village and then through cavern passage to another path that meanders through a field to the local Tunpu museum.
We had lunch across from the entrance to the nearby Benzhai village. The food was fine, but very expensive (no menu). We negotiated down the price considerably, but I would avoid the restaurant. There is only one.
Benzhai village is also stone and slate and undergoing restoration. There are a lot of old women in local dress who are very happy to be photographed. It's great whether you're a photographer or not. I would go soon. I had the feeling that it will all be touristy in a year or two.
The village has lovely stone houses with slate roofs. The slate is laid out to form a diamond pattern, which is visually interesting and good for photos. There is a lot of restoration going on, so it's good to go now.
Our visit to both villages took about 5 hours round trip.
