Banzhan Shan, we call it "Macau Mountain", to my knowledge it is dedicated to the reunion of Mainland China and Macau in 1999. And those the explanation for the 1999 steps leading up the mountain. You can monitor your progress by reading off the step number, which is written on the steps.
You can either run with the crowd, up the 1999 steps, along the ridge and back down the other side (steps and steep road) of the circular walk. Or, if you are more adventures you can explore one of the many trails on the mountain. If you pay attention you will see quite a few trails coming off the main circular walk. If you choose to do that, make sure you wear proper foot wear (no flip flops and similar) since most of those are dirt trails and plan your time accordingly. Bring also water with you. Note: those trails are not marked to this time.
Drinks and food can be obtained along the street up towards the parking lot. There is also a hiking store which offers quite a nice selection of hiking goods (back packs, clothing, shoes and so on).
During the morning times you can observe some Chinese People dancing and practicing Tai Chi next to the parking lot.

If you step off the fixed trail and head out on the dirt paths there are some great walks away from the crowds. I went through the palace and to the lake, through the theatre and over the bridge and then turned right up a path and some steps. I was then able to follow a backwoods trail all the way around the ridge and upto the radio masts. The exit was down a long set of concrete steps - there are many people at this eastern end of the park and almost no one on the western side.
