we went there for camping as my son school organized this trip. It is a long 1.5 hours drive from the city to the ferry terminal. Then we need to talk about 40 min ferry to this island. The island is suitble for camping activies and getaway from busy life.

Not your typical island / beach experience

Others have mentioned this place is not easy to access and all that is true. If you do brave it, I recommend lots of snacks as the restaurant on the island is terrible. They don't let u swim everywhere so even though the beach is quite nice, you can't really enjoy it. Camping on site could be fun with lots of friend thigh. Worth a visit if you have extra time to kill in the hotter months of the year in Zhuhai.

Hebao. Zhuhai best kept secret.

Although difficult to get too, well worth the effort. A taxi ride, a 20 minutes boat ride. Then over the mountain on a motorcycle. A beautiful beach awaits you. Fantastic swimming. Restaurant was close, so back on the motorcycle to the harbor . The local fisherman prepared the freshest ever chilling crab, spices fish with rice and Chinese greens. Plus HiaZhu beer. Absolutely outstanding and what a lovely gentleman and his wife.
Will definitely recommend and I will return.

We traveled to Zhuhai for the weekend and decided to go to Hebao island for the day. It is quite a long trip to get to the island (one hour and a half to get to the port and 20minutes by ferry to get to the island), but once you arrive the trip was worth the while. As far as beaches go in China, this one is quite nice. The water is clean enough and not a lot of people. The rubbish on the beach is a bit of an downside, though. We had lunch at the local restaurant, which was average. If you are in Zhuhai and looking for a beach with a few visitors, I would recommend Hebao island.

Pretty tough to get to, and not really for foreign travelers. Luckily I had Chinese speakers with me to make most of the arrangements and dealing with the staff. It required an hour taxi ride from downtown Zhuhai, a 20 minute search for the hidden ferry dock, a half hour ferry ride, and a 20 minute bus ride once on the island. So it ended up taking all morning to get there. They have a hotel (a concrete unattractive building), huts or tents for accommodations. The huts are really more of a large dog house on short legs, barely tall enough to sit up in and possibly not long enough for very tall people to sleep comfortably . The huts come with a thin straw mat, pillow and light cover for bedding. The huts are a little farther back from the beach than the tents, but the shade that the solid roofs provide may be worth it especially during the hottest days. There is only one restaurant, with a very limited menu and no decor and very greasy tables. There is a single little supply store providing chips and drinks and grooming supplies. The group toilets are squat only, and pretty dilapidated. Same for the showers. But the place is cheap, really cheap, and I live in China so I'm used to a lot of the above privations. There is a long deep beach and nice hiking. My biggest problem with the place was that the "swimming area" is only about 50 meters long and packed with people. Don't try and wade in the area outside the swimming area, the lifeguards will whistle until your ear drums bleed. The ocean was pretty rough, so we didn't swim so much as play "who will be bashed by the next big wave." Not exactly a fancy beach resort, but I enjoyed myself anyway, but that probably had to do with hanging out with good friends.
