Still An Escape

Qi’ao village itself is largely untouched by tourism, so it’s an accessible and welcoming look at modern village life. At points along the shores of the island the beaches and parks have been significantly upgraded, the nature walks refurbished, and the infrastructure updated.

At least it's not urban
Nov 2018
In connection with opening of the Mega-Bridge from Hong Kong, we took a bus tour from Wanchai over the bridge, all through Zhuhai (what a sprawl), and wound up here for the final 45 minutes before returning to HK. It's easy to see this little tourist area will change significantly during the next five years as busses like ours flood the place. Trendy coffee shops and the like are already displacing traditional homes along the few alleys we had time to see. Lots of drying fish and other seafood, though.

It's absolutely fine, right now, for a short walking stroll. If there were real places to eat, we didn't see them, but given Zhuhai's relatively recent development, we did enjoy seeing remnants of old houses and a slight flavor of how it may have been, not long ago, to live on this Qiáo island's lanes. I suspect but can't confirm that there must be a commercial area we couldn't find, or else nobody would have much available.

Would I go back? Not likely. Too many other things to do.

No, just no

I love chinese villages but this is just a poor area with alleys not really a village. No tourists around and that baishi street, there is nothing there. A few houses. No way to catch a cab back. For a bike ride there is the long beautiful road by the beach in the mainland. Maybe if you rent a car it would be nice to take a drive around the island. But other than that not really. Nothing there just a nice circular road all around.

Beautiful little island with great sea food restaurants

A must see for anyone interested in history. Qing house line narrow streets going nowhere.. Tea shops and specialist ceramic shops have recently emerged as have signs for AirBnBs. Large canons in the square still remind visitors of the horrors of the Opium War and guns still face towards the sea poking out through the ramparts. Great fresh sea food restaurant along the beach but very busy at the weekends. Nice walks along the sea front

Day trip
Aug 2016 • Friends
It was a very pleasant surprise to spend the day away from the busy downtown zhuhai. A fishermen's village that still keeps some of the peace and pace of the past. Some temples are being nicely kept along with some traditional houses some repaired other in ruins. On waterfront the sea water is not very clear due to the sediments from the Pearl River Delta, so not that inviting for swimming as we wished it was on a hot summer day. But it was quite nice having a meal while looking at the sea.

Spent a couple days here over Dragon Boat Festival for some R&R. It is the perfect place to unwind. There are several beaches, but they were filthy. So much litter and who knows what else. But I love to listen to the waves crashing and people watch. The village is quaint and clean. The main road has many places to rent bicycles for an afternoon of leisurely exploring. Or the sidewalk are wide and safe for a great walk. We stayed at a fantastic hostel cheap. I wish I knew the name of the place. Qi Ao Dao.......I'd come back!

Not much happening in November
Nov 2014
I was stuck 10mins away for z day and wanted to pass the time. I caught 81 bus and followed directions of others!!! I don't think any of them did it for real!! Firstly there are 3 stops on the island. Each has bike rental establishments. If I was doing it again I would get off at first one and rent a bike....which is also near the seafood restaurants apparently.....I never found them. I stayed on till the end like reviewers said and started walking. About 3 tracks to the right.... It is hard to know what 1 km is ....but I swear I walked further looking for the mangrove area.....took the first right....it was not without interest but was an uphill cycle path....I had to turn back and retrace footsteps....when I got back I found a map......you have to carry on around the tight left bend and further down the mangrove swamps are on the right but it was raining and I had a ferry to catch so not a good experience.....BUT it was a real taste of the country just out of the city which was good.....and if I went to the area again I would have a whole day, hire a bike and see the mangrove swamp and the beach.
Deserted ghost town (half built) was z curiosity too

Not really a tourist place

There is a fantastic bridge to drive across, it was built at a time when it was expected to be part of the Hong Kong - China bridge.

But it was rerouted and so becoming a white elephant. I have driven several times to this island. Except for seafood joint, I don't think there is much here for sightseeing.

Nice place, where you can rent a bike and enjoying a nice ride into the Mangrove. Good choice for make a break of the noizy and growing Zhuhai. You can find some nice restaurant near the sea, with reasonable price and very good food.

Zhuhai International School
Jun 2013 • Family
Nice location, apart from the International school is a good palce for hiking or biking. No traffic and some nice sight of the ocean and part of Guangdong cost. Is located east of Zhuhai at around 30 KM from the center. There is a bike path from the center of Zhuhai to reach the island.
