One of the most fascinating insights to history of China
Jan 2017
I did a weekend trip to Zhongshan from Hong Kong, and thought I would go to the Soy Sauce Museum just to have a look. After all, it isn't everyday that you come across one!

We took a taxi from town and it took about 20-30 minutes to get there. The museum is set in an industrial area so when you get there it may be hard to get your bearings. Just ask one of the many security guards where it is and they will point you the right way.

Entry fee is RMB 20 which you pay at the entrance. The museum is spread out over three floors. Most of the exhibits are in Chinese only so it's best to go with a friend who can translate for you, or use Google Translate! It gives a very detailed and fascinating insight to the importance of soy sauce in Chinese history and culture - all very cool. My favourite parts are the legends of how soy sauce was discovered, as well as how soy sauce was traditionally made.

Do bear in mind that this museum is part of the Chubang Soy Sauce factory so you will eventually be led to an area where you can see the factory production line - very, very cool. Kids will absolutely love it. On the way out you will come to a eating area where you can get a very small scoop of soy sauce ice-cream for RMB 1, and try some pickles marinated in soy sauce for free. And of course, you go through a shop where you can buy all sorts of soy sauce for less than half the price you will pay in supermarkets.

This place is definitely worth checking out; at the very least there is the kitsch factor to entertain yourself!

A unique experience

The smell of soy sauce hit us as we got out of the car. Entry was only 20RMB per person. We went on a Monday afternoon and had the entire museum to ourselves, so we took our time looking around the 3 floors of the museum and viewing areas of the factory. The exhibitions show the history and both the traditional & modern process of manufacturing soy sauce. The only issue I had was that there was no English text on the exhibit information, which is my problem not theirs, anyway I had my wife translate/explain some things to me. Overall I was able to figure out what the exhibits were about, as everything is laid out in a logical way. At the end of the tour through the factory you come to a tasting area, the soy sauce ice cream is a must try and tastes better than it sounds. You also get a souvenir bottle of soy sauce from the ticket office as you leave. I would highly recommend this place if you want to do something different and a good way to fill in a hour or so.
