Trapped in Shenzhen, all flights to just about anywhere in the world outside of China cancelled due to the widening grip of ‘Coronacracy’, so decide to journey to Hong Kong to catch a plane to Sydney. First option, the train to Kowloon, ruled out on route for fear of being quarantined in Xianggang for 14 days. Redirect the taxi to Shekou Port, ferry from the terminal to HK Airport. Good choice, hourly ferries ¥280 one way. Forewarned about HK heavy extra-security measures (HK Dept of Health texted me while I was on the boat) but the HK port customs authorities at Shekou only got me to fill in the standard customs form (2 separate forms actually!) and submitted me to the routine temperature check and then waved me through. Relax once on board, take in the hilly views of the New Territories on the half-hour trip. Disembarking at HK Airport, the process to get through this end was pretty seamless and straightforward (plus a bonus tax refund). Lucky to go when when I did, two days later the HK govt closed the Shekou terminal due to the incidence of the virus discovered.

Two days ago, I tried to take the Shekou Ferry to the Hong Kong airport to catch my flight. I arrived at the ferry terminal 2 hrs and 15 minutes before my flight was scheduled to depart, but the ferry operator refused to sell me a ferry ticket! According to the ticket agent, the arilines have a rule that no passengers may board a ferry less than 2.5 hours prior to their flight departure. The ferry brochure says nothing about this, neither in English nor in Chinese. So I joined 3 other travelers in a mad taxi dash from Shekou Port on Shenzhen Port, where we caught a HK taxi to the airport. I missed my flight, and had to take a later one. If you want to take the ferry back to the airport, allow PLENTY of time.

Review of Shekou ferry terminal
From Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, it took 1hr 15 min to reach Shenzhen Shekou ferry terminal.
The ferry was clean, comfortable and left on time. I fell asleep almost throughout the whole journey. Upon arrival, one man approached us offering taxi service. We asked was it by meter and he replied yes. When we told him the hotel's address, he asked his driver and his driver knew the place. Before we can reply, they took our luggages and showed us to their vehicle which was a normal car, we felt strange but the man showed us to the passenger seats. When we asked how much is the fare, he told us it is RMB220. We remembered reading from the review that it doesn't costs that much since it was a short distance of 5km to our hotel. We wanted out but the man kept telling us it took half an hour to reach and we have the wrong info as there were two ferry terminals, he was very insistence and he was standing outside the vehicle, while we were at the rear passenger seats. Being in a foreign land, we just gave in to pay him RMB220. He paid the driver RMB20 and the driver drove off. Just about 20m away, we saw so many taxis outside the terminal. I learnt it from the hard way, never never talk to any stranger who approach you once you alight from a ferry/plane ride.

Catching a Ferry from Hong Kong International Airport to Shekou Port is a very convenient way to enter Shenzhen (China).
At the HKIA arrivals hall, there is no need to go through HK immigration, present your pre-paid ticket to the ferry company. They collect your luggage from the carousel and load onto the ferry.
About 30 mins before the ferry departure, you are transferred by automated people mover to the sky pier. Once boarded, the ferry takes around 30 mins to Shekou. Upon arrival, collect your luggage from the jetty and proceed to China immigration and Customs. The Foreigner channel generally clears in under 10 mins, much faster than the metro or vehicle crossings into Shenzhen.
When returning to HKIA from Shekou, most major airlines have check-in counters for luggage transfer on the same ferry for loading direct to your flight. Saves a lot of time.
The taxi rank is less than 100 metres from the ferry building, sometimes there is a wait if there is few in line. Don't be tempted by the fake/black taxis - always use official red or white/blue vehicles. Have your destination written in Mandarin as most drivers have little or no English. A taxi from Shekou to Dongmen or Luohu will cost around 85RMB (around AUD $15) and take around 45 mins.
There is a time saving of around one hour transiting by ferry from HKIA to Shekou and taxi to Dongmen than catching the metro from Hung Hom via HKIA or share limousine.
Ferry's can be caught at Shekou to Macau, Hong Kong Central pier and Zhuhai.

Having travelled from humen to visit this area we decided to visit MACAWLEYS IRISH BAR for sunday lunch .we decided to sit upstairs and found our seat which was blasted with ice cold air from Air condition unit above our head ,so moving away we settled to read menu which we did using our phones to see the menu as the room was very dark .ordering our food 4 meals in total we settled with our drinks to await food which eventually arrived .The food was very heavily seasoned with Salt and after a few mouthfuls we decided not to eat any more and made our complaint to waitress who never even apologised or asked if we wanted anything else just said that is the taste ?? basically take it or leave it .Finishing our drinks we proceeded downstairs to pay bill asking them to split the bill into 2 payments not a easy task as they asked my wife who had had what and this was related to them .When the bills were made up they were wrong overcharged on one of them and when we told the cashier this she then said that my wife had given here the wrong information .After a verbal volley from my wife telling her it was not her job to do the waitresses duties another girl came to solve this very difficult task and we eventually got out .Having visited many many expat bars all over china and the world this is certainly one i will never visit again certainly not for food .My advice avoid this chain pub you are just a number and no personnel service and food quality shocking.

We stayed in probably the only hotel in Shekou. Small, but clean, friendly and cheap. Shekou is a nice small village to wander around. It is frequently used for movies playing in the first half of the previous century. On Saturday there is a splendid typical Chinese market. It is close to Kaiping and thus Guangzhou and a good base to visit the Unesco appraised diaolou's.

The best, fastes and inexpensive way to reach Hongkong airport from Shenzen is by a ferry from Shekou Ferry terminal.
There is a ferry every hour and the boat takes 30 minutes.
Its ideal if u have a large suitcase, u an check it in at the terminal and collect it at your final destination.
The terminal is large and very easy to navigate with boards in English too.
You can check in anytime irrespective of flight timings. First buy a ferry ticket costing RMB270 and then check it to your flight counter.
After reaching HK you can claim refund if your tax and board a monorail to the main airport.
Hk has ome of the best airport check in facilities in the world.
Train or taxi from shenzen will take 2 to 3 hours to reach the airport. So ferry is the best option.

I just had terrible experience with shekou ferry services. I planned to take 7:15 am ferry to reach HKG airport (my flight was at 10:25). I arrived at the port, bought a ticket, got through security and passport control (I left mainland china there - invalidated my single entry visa) and waited to board the ship. At exactly 15 minutes later, all ferries scheduled for morning got cancelled due to thick fog. It took me about 2 hours to get "back to china" and then we needed to use minivan trasport.
Obviously I have missed my flight and had to buy a new ticket.
So be careful - even if you have spare 3 hours it might not be enough.

A mix of Expat housing compound, "European" style pedestrian street, a boat on a dry land and a ferry harbor.
An unusual but relax feeling in this peninsula offering a ferry to Macau, Hong Kong central peer, Hong Kong Airport.
Prices are rather high and many Shenzhen locals are coming during the weekend to visit the place as it would be a taste of "Europe".
They renovated the Sea World area recently and offer a temporary exhibition for the visitors (during CNY 2014: light show and fireworks).
Metro/Tube / Underground is brand new, clean, starts at 06:30.
Ferry to HK during WE starts at 09:00. Last ferry from HK to Shekou is 20:30.
Please note that Sea World is not a place where you will see the sea, nor fishes, nor aquarium, only restaurants, bars and cafés.

Stayed there for 5 nights on business. Many western people and bars.
Quite far from downtown areas of Shenzhen but the subway system is easy to navigate.
Nightlife is interesting but beware of the prostitutes in the evening!
