A Gold Coast Revisit - no reason to.
Aug 2018
It's been a year or so since my last visit to the Gold Coast, and I think it was just the ease of getting there that had me going to it's elevator again. First the good: the upselling lounge "mangers" are gone, hopefully they're all off selling aluminum siding now. Everything is done on your lounge touch-screen TV monitors. Beverages, lounge massage, who's available, when they will be available. The only caveat to this is their services and types of massage are all in Chinese - even after you have clicked the English version option. Worse the Google photo translator only translates about a third of the options. Thankfully the waiters will help you, and it soon becomes easier. Also on the good side, they serves a descent cup of coffee in the lounge chairs. The Gold Coast is also known for its very attractive masseuses, but more importantly how good their massages are. I had a lounge thigh massage to get my circulation going after flying for 17 hours bouncing between typhoons, and once it was established that 'just' my legs needed massaged it was most excellent as was the dry Chinese massage done by a matronly professional - all in price 418rmb including taxes and tips; a bargain! The bad: the changing room and pool area attendants. This place has at least 5X more than any equivelent place and they all stand around avoiding any contact that would mean they actually have to do anything. Trying to get the pools bubble chairs, high preasure water spout, and steam room going required making eye contact with one of them, a pointed finger, and eventually an action ... worse, with the exception of the steam room, these bubbles and water massages only last 60 seconds and then the whole process of getting the attention started all over again. Hilariously, they requested a 100rmb cash tip at the end saying there were so many of them that was what was need - they got 20. I might return, but there are so many others that offer a better pool/sauna/steam experience that it's doubtful, unless I am in the area.

Must pay tips to all services!!!暗中收小費的黑店,請不要再比錢幫襯啦!最低消費$159再加10%服務費,仲呃tips,講大話就是要你比小費!太過份!

Minimum order for $159, need 10% services fee, and also $60-$200 tips!! So terrible!!!

Do not go here

Money grabbing, don’t be fooled by the low prices at the door, you’ll be expected a minimum compulsory tip for your effectless massage, tip for someone to show you to your locker, and service charge on top of your bill. The place is dirty, people smoking wherever they wishes.

Hot and cold; great to so-so ...

I've been to Gold Coast a few times now and with a few reservations I would recommend it. First, it's a nice facility clean and organized change & locker room, nice relaxing pool and sauna area, great lounge area with chairs that will power down to a bed - many people spend the night in such places and extra pillows and blankets are provided - your stay is good for 24 hours, before any extra charges are added.

They have several types of services available in the lounge chairs with posted prices: pedicure, manicure, foot massage, thigh massage, shoulder and neck massage, ear cleaning ... averaging about 70rmb each +tip.

For the several types of massages available in their tastefully decorated massage rooms from Thai, Chinese, Hong Kong, there's various prices and times - all current prices can be found on their website. The masseuses are normally very attractive and expert at what they do.

'Free' fruit snackes and drinks are available as are extra cost full-course meals, beers, and liquors in a nice, but not great, little dining area. The also have a snooker room, and I think I saw a computer room (gaming?)

Expect your bill to be about 350-500 for a lounge chair service, or two, and a modestly priced Chinese massage, This should be an all-in price including tips and surcharges. That said, if you go wild, it could easily cost double or triple that. No matter what the price it's a bargain for any comparable service in the Americas.

That leads into the cons - it's all about the money! On weekends I was once told by a very aggressive receptionist's helper that I 'must' have at least one 'full' massage, that's the first, and only, time that ever happened. That same day the lounge manager was also very aggressive in having me book a massage room massuse even though i was currently having a foot massage and didn't really like what i had to do. This aggressiveness has not happened when I've gone weekdays.

Tips, like other have mentioned are also bizzar; their forms all have higher amounts than what you would think. Starting at 70 and going to 150 which is just plain silly: 20-50 should be the max. 70rmb, if you really like the service. The locker-boy tips are generally 20rmb, paid once on leaving.

Their pool area's steam room is often not in operation, whether its the cost, low demand, or just crappy maintenance has never been discovered. As well their pools water jetted pool chairs are controlled by an attendent who is rarely available to turn the jets on, and when he does they're on for 5 minutues max.

The absolute worse thing, and it has nothing to do with just the Gold Spa, they're all the same is the smoking in the lounge area .... it's gross! However, you can get around it by paying about 50rmb, for a private lounge room. These have a large screen TV, and anywhere from 5-8 lounge chairs. They might even have suites - some places do.

I would go back because it's conveniently located, has a nice ambiance, and I've become wise to some of their antics

Better than average

The place is ok and offers what it claims.
Massage, ears cleaning, manicure and pedicure are all offered by skilled professionals at least as far as my experience goes.
The place is decently clean and functional with a comfortable decoration although not exactly new nor amazingly fancy.
Food is not included with the entrance, apart of fruit, but is not very expensive and is worth the price.
Fancy service seem available if you name the right figure and, somehow annoyingly, you are repeatedly offered to enjoy it by quite pushy promoters.
You can get rid of them by simply dismissing them firmly and menacing to leave if they assault you again. Don't worry to offend them, they are rubber faced. Simply do not make a fuss as they won't understand what's your problem.
Speaking the language would help you a lot thus better to go with someone who speaks Chinese fluently and is used to the situation.
Being not the first choice of Hong Kong visitors, it is not overwhelmingly crowded at weekends and festivals.

Nice Place to Relax

Here are some tips for beginners to this SPA so you won't get ripped off!

Locker Area - Let them lead you to your locker area to change. Walk behind and behave like a boss! Only tip ¥10/20 when leaving the SPA!

Wide variety of Fruits & Beverages

Ordering Massuer - Pick your choice of Massuer with Photos. Do have this in mind that their photos were taken when they join. After several night shifts, even u do look like hell without proper rest ya! There will be witches around trying to rip u so help yourself to the computer! Price is fixed so don't worry UNLESS u follow the witch to another area! Tipping starts from ¥30 for 100 minutes massage.
Guys pls bring ¥100-200 cash separately to the massage room. After Happy Ending, draw ¥30 tip on the form & give cash ¥100/200 to the Massuer instead!

If you encounter anyone tries to threaten u, take out your phone to call 110. Police station is just down the road. U need to be tougher than them and talk lesser or just ignore. When u speak, please be confident and ADD some attitude! If u speak English, be prepared to be ripped off!

Anyway I never encountered those problems posted by fellow members.

I hope the Gold Coast Spa reads this..

I am confused as to why there are so many bad reviews about this place? I am wondering if I should even go there when I arrive, does the management care at all? are they doing anything to correct the problems?

I am seeking a location for 35 employees and their families, and a place they can relax, but if this is the situation and people will push them and over charge them I wont go...

I have been to China (Xiamen, Shanghai and Beijing ) and each time I stayed for 2 months...I am going to visit some suppliers in Shenzhen
I hope the Gold Coast Spa can reply to this message
