Lots to see, various kinds of animals. Our kids love it so much. Reasonable price and it is good to spend a day with the family there.

I felt so sorry for the animals! The zoo is poorly run and isn't worth 200RMB. Everything is extremely old and needs an upgrade. It wasn't a happy experience but more of a distressed one.

We went there on a Monday morning and it was pleasant empty, very spacious, the animals active. Many animals with a lot of space to roam around.

My friends and I had been told this was a “good” zoo, and all things considered I know there are worse zoos out there, but I just want other people to know what to expect as I would not have visited if I’d known this.
Many of the animals including pigs right at the entrance, goats, alpacas and elephants are all kept on concrete floor (very harmful to hooved feet), kangaroos and emus on bare dirt (generally they spend days grazing on grassland in the wild) and nearly all were kept away from sides of their enclosures by way of electric fences. As my friends and I were leaving we passed what was presumably going to be a bird show, where parrots were attached to stands with a 20cm chain, many of them trying to bite at it in agitation. I do not think they are left like that all the time however.
I cannot say for the rest of the zoo as after we saw these animals we had decided it was distressing enough and left. Since it was 240RMB for a ticket (50.8AUD), it is expensive for a disappointing visit and hope this helps other make a more informed decision.

After paying for the entrance fee, there are many other costs at every turn so be prepared. Some of the costs are typical. For example, paying to feed animals or pictures with animals are seen at many other zoos. There are electric scooters that you can rent as well. There is an artic exhibition of animals that requires everyone to rent a 30RMB coat in order to enter. All of the amusement rides have an additional cost as well. The zoo is fairly clean and as others have said, some animals look healthier than others. We did enjoy feeding the bears. I will also add that the 15-25RMB plastic animals from the vendors are very good quality. Kids under 1.2 meters are free.

The zoo is one of my favorites as it has many varieties of animals, birds, fishes, etc., a showground and an amusement park. It is a large zoo and it takes a good 2-3 hours to walk around leisurely. One could feed the tigers and lions from inside a caged car, to get a close encounter with these wild animals. They are extremely fast in seizing the chicken meat. A must-see in Shenzhen. Go on a sunny day with relatively cool weather; the animals and birds will appear very active and happy. On a hot, cold or rainy day, they will normally hide away.

The price we paid for admission was $87HKD instead of 240RMB. Kids under 120cm are free. There are several online travel agencies that offer discounted vouchers, to be exchanged at the customer service booth there for the actual tickets and don’t forget to bring your foreign ID as they do check at the turnstiles.
The tiger/lion/bear encounters abroad the caged van starting at 11am is a must do. It costs 50rmb per head kids under 120cm again get to go for free. It was so much fun and a complete hoot! Bring rmb cash to pay for the ride!!!! They have also built a skywalk through the “African valley” which you can circumnavigate and get a view of the tigers and lions from tree top.
The seaworld show featured a few former Soviet divers performing cheesy skits that cracked up the crowd but the seal/dolphin show was a bit pedestrian.
The kids also fed giraffes and saw the zebras mating haha!! The amusement park was heaps of fun and we wished we had time for the water park too.
Apart from the blistering sun and the oppressive heat we had a great day out. We could have easily spent a second day there as there was so much more to do and see.
Overall it was a well run venue and we didn’t feel overwhelmed by the Sunday crowd interspersed with school groups.

This is a decent zoo. It is geared and designed with children in mind. The ;rice is a bit steep for adults at about $35 when converted. That makes it more expensive than other popular attractions in the city. That said there is good variety and lots to see.

If we take the MTR from HK to LoWu and get on Shenzen metro at Luohu, what stop do we take get to the zoo?
How long does it take to get from HK-Central Station to zoo?

The zoo is at University Town station. So from Luohu (green line), I would go north to Laojie. Then change to go further north to Buji (blue line). At Buji, change and go west to University Town (violet line). It will take you about 45 mins to get there from Luohu.
When you reach University Town, use Exit C (stay on the road side of the exit) and go North on Lishan Road (i.e. go right at Exit C) until it ends at Lishui Road, then left/west short distance until it ends at Xili Road and finally go right/north a short distance and the entrance will be on the right/east of the street. It is about 1.4km walk (another 20 mins). There will be brown direction signs to the park at the level of street lights i.e. above your head.
So plan your journey well knowing that you would want to be there as early as possible so that the kids can enjoy all the animals and also see the shows without being in a hurry i.e. you can sit at times and rest.
There are other attractions inside the zoo for kids and adults e.g. inflatable balloon on the lake (kids love it), getting on elephant's back, the dolphins show, feed the bears. Some are free but others are for a small fee like 10 or 20 yuans. But well worth them if this is the first time to a big zoo.
I also suggest doing the visit on foot rather than by mini bus. you can then take all your time. Enjoy.
