Worth a trip.if you are staying in Chaozhou. Closer to Chaozhou than Shantou, RMB60 vs RMB100 Didi trip. Chaozhou is a much better place to stay anyway as Shantou not really a tourist centre
Residence has over 500 rooms but only about a quarter open to public. The rest lookstill lived in by local village people.
Makes an interesting couple of hours trip
RMB40 to go in

Paid an admission fee. Impressed by the size of this mansion. However there is not much maintenance done and lack of life around. Some rooms are used for selling Knick knacks, food and furniture. Overall it’s quite deserted and paints a lonely picture.

(陈慈黉故居) This property is located about 25km from downtown Shantou and takes about an hour by taxi to get there in normal traffic.
The property seems run down. Certainly it is a huge property and had seen better times.
Local government plans to develop the property and the surroundings into a tourist attraction seems to be on the drawing board.
The snack shop was not opened when I was there and there was at least a bus load of HK tourists on the property. There were also local tourists there too.
Maybe the distance make it a challenge to attract the crowd. However the local Didi driver testify that the crowd is huge during weekends and festivals. A new road access to the property had been built to divert traffic away from the village.

Our tour group visited this mansion in Chenghai district. It was constructed by a rich and influential overseas chinese merchant from Thailand. Mr Chen came back to his former village and built this mansion, which has 506 halls and rooms.
The mansion was built combining the Eastern and Western architectural designs with imported building materials. Some antiques and calligraphic stone inscriptions are displayed in the residence.
There's a shop selling local products and souvenirs inside this mansion. Don't use the toilets in the mansion as it is dark and has lots of mosquitoes. There's a toilet beside the ticket booth at the front gate.
Those who are interested in Chinese history and culture will like this place.

what is excellent over here is the area is quite secluded from hordes of tourist, meaning that one can have lesiurely walk and explore around nooks and corners of the huge complex of the residence with over 500rooms! most with intricate details of window and door frames, courtyards, halls that's influenced by arabeques techniques, chinese, european and much south east asian characteristics. highly recommended before its get commercialized. but the transportation is a bit of a challenge if travel by own.

I would rate this 500-plus room private residence one of the top attractions in Shantou. Both the roof & floor tiling with imported materials is amazing. The Chen family who made their fortune in Thailand combined Chinese, European and Middle Eastern architectural design for their ancestral mansion.

The Mansion is grand and is a eye opener to see it. It's a very good location to understand how the local whom venture overseas to work and they still come back to their homeland and build wonderfully house with materials that are so foreign to China.
Its also how how strait born Chinese food and architecture introduced to China back then.
Other then the house, there are also side entertainment like Chinese puppet show and a Teochew Opera singer performing.
Don't forget to try some of the food at the stores in the mansion.
Its very good and close to the orginal Teochew taste
