For many domestic travelers, the West Lake is the only reason to visit Huizhou. Despite of its somehow self-proclaimed fame and renown, the lake itself is actually quite unimpressive. Yes, there are some good photo spots, but the whole area lacks much appeal to international tourists. It is more like an urban park for weekend respite. Nothing particularly outstanding.

It is very relaxing to walk around in the area. Fall is a great time of year to visit Huizhou West Lake. The summer heat and humidity are gone, and the scenic views are postcard perfect.

We enjoyed our day out on a rather wet day, but we didn't mind the rain at all as the weather was quite pleasant. The lake is really huge and quite historic. There are several places to see, including the Pagoda, a small hill, crocodile island etc. A nice place to spend a few hours exploring.

I have not been to the West Lake for a long long time. My mother was from Huizhou so we used to visited this lake in the past. This year we went to see it again and were glad to see most of the facilities were renovated. Some bridges were renovated in 2012 and they were still doing work on it.

We rented an electric boat for 4 people (CNY 60 for half and hour, CNY 120 for an hour), and totally enjoyed it. The electric boat was much quicker so we could see most of the lake. The manual boat was much cheaper but it was a very hot day and we didn't want to be using our energy of paddling a boat. We could see some people struggled with the manual boats and were glad we got an electric one.

Prices of boats are clearly shown on top of the cashier so you can pick easily.

There are many entrances to West Lake, since West Lake is actually several lakes joined together by bridges. So before you go, you should take a look at the map and check their website to see what you would like to see. If you have not been to Suzhou you will quite enjoy this Chinese garden 惠州西湖丰渚园, at one of the entrace to the lake.
In the springtime around late March, the sunsets are charming if you just sit in one of the pavilions in the middle of the lake and watch the hundreds of swallows busily flying around.
On weekdays in the summer, the lotus garden is most impressive with hundreds of salad bowl size pink lotus blooming.
Every Chinese New Year, West lake have these really beautiful lantern floats all over the lake, it is very colorful and magical especially if you go at night time, if not for the few high-rises in the distance, I would think that I have returned to China a few hundred years ago!
You can't directly compare the Hangzhou West Lake to this one, on the other hand, you won't find yourself in a noisy and over crowded touristy place either, which is the reason for the fourth star I have rated here.

After living in Shenzhen for nearly 6 years, I thought it was about time to visit the city of Huizhou. I'd seen countless brochures selling new house in the area, and it looked like the biggest satellite boom town in the area. We took the 1.5 hour bus ride there from the Luohu bus station. Cost of the bus was 110 rmb for 2 people, which is roughly $17.75 USD. Not bad for air conditioned comfort while someone else does the driving.
We arrived at the typical small-town bus station, got to our hotel, and then made our way to West Lake. It's a very relaxing walk around the lake, not very crowded even though it was Sunday. The free entrance was a bonus. We decided not to take one of the boats around the lake. Options for that included peddle-paddle boats, electric boats, and tour boats. My wife, who's been to the infinitely more famous West Lake in Hangzhou, informed me that the Hangzhou West Lake is much more beautiful. That wouldn't be much of a challenge. The centerpiece pagoda was nice, but you couldn't climb up in it, so that was a bit of a disappointment. There is a shopping street complex across the street from the lake which was fun to walk down and window shop while having a coffee. The rest of the time in Huizhou was kind of boring. Despite the fact that several millionaires and billionaires reportedly live in the city, it doesn't seem that much of their money has made it into improving the city's curb appeal riverfront. I think they must spend it mostly on luxury houses and items kept well out of sight. We heard about an Austrian themed town not far away, but then read that they were simply outrageously priced homes in the Austrian style. Amusing, since we are nearly tropical in climate here. If you're in Huizhou for reasons that can't be avoided, stop by West Lake for a relaxing afternoon stroll.

The City of HuiZhou puts on the best lighting and lantern display in China around the West Lake for Chinese Lunar New Year every year.

Great place to spending half day. Easy to access. Many scenic spots with ancient pavilions, towers & bridges. Beautiful plantations & lots of shops and restaurants around the lake.
Must visit the Taoist Temple which is one of the top 10 in China.
West Lake is huge to walk and best to visit in cool seasons. Short boat rides around the lake can save your walking. No entrance fee so many locals especially weekends and holidays but never gets crowded in view of it's size.
Key attractions mainly near North & East Gates ( there is a walking street near East Gate ).

Recommended to stay at your hotel as this place is overly crowded. Not a enjoyable place to be in especially in a hot and humid day. There is a shopping mall nearby but be aware of the counterfeit products. There is a mconald's nearby (yes I didn't spell it wrong) where you can sit in and enjoy the beautiful West Lake view.
