The Only Place to Go for Craft Beer in Huizhou
Oct 2019
As the only brewpub in Huizhou, you might expect KrakHaus wouldn’t have to try that hard to be popular. Just hire a contractor to decorate a space with a generic pub-in-a-week kit: pinkish faux brick, strings of international flags for the ceiling, DIY beer-and-brewing-themed wall decorations, and flimsy furniture. Learn how to brew beer on YouTube and buy your equipment and ingredients from Taobao. Brand your beer as an angry, lucky, happy, or flying animal of some sort. Prominently display “craft beer” in Chinese and English on your storefront. Voilà! You’re in business. Upon opening, the local smokin’ bros come in, are tired of their regular local, so they make your place their own. Success! Every night, the boys roll in later in the evening, buy towers of beer, play drinking games, then pull out the cards, increasingly hooting and hollering as they chain smoke their way to shuizhao time.

KrakHaus is not one of these pubs. The room at KrakHaus is oriented around a u-shaped bar with tables along the perimeter. An enclosed brewhouse is tucked away on the left side, while on the right there’s a small mezzanine for extra seating. The first feeling you get upon entering is one of warmth -- from the colour palette of the interior and the retro incandescent lighting. The seats look sturdy and comfortable; maybe you’ll want to stay a while. When I’m travelling solo, that usually means getting a seat at the bar so that I’ll be able to ask the bartender (who may actually be the owner-brewer) questions and usually get more informed answers than from the server.

There are 18 taps to choose from with a mixture of house and guest beers that regularly change. At the time of my visit, there were 12 house brews with a broad offering of styles that ranged from a Lager and a Wit, to a sour, Stout, de rigueur Hazy IPA, and even a barley wine. I first sampled each house beer to determine my favourites. The standouts for me were the Wit Dream, Yoda Lager, and the Barley Bruiser barley wine. The latter, however, I saved for last. At 11.7% ABV, it made for a suitable nightcap.

Aside from being the only craft brewery in Huizhou, I also discovered that KrakHaus is a welcoming place that is open to all, no matter what your race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. This was evident after I made a brief survey of a selection of other neighbouring bar street establishments. KrakHaus clearly had the most customers. It was lively even late on a Sunday evening.
