This is the main Square of Lanzhou. There is nothing special apart from a large number of white doves. You can buy food for them, and they will eat it from your hands. Also you can find here Pizza Hut, KFC and а big shopping center.

This is a special area in Lanzhou, not only for westerns but also for locals. You can find different stores for shopping and restaurants and/or cafes for eating local tyical food or something different, like pizza at Pizza Hut. Definetely one of my favorite areas in the city. After shopping or eating, just walk a little bit and you will reach the Yellow River border for a walk. It´s really worth!

A good place to watch Lanzhou pass by, or grab a bite, or visit an excellent grocery store (in the basement of the central building in the square, at least for now...nearby buildings have been demolished for fancy malls, so this one's days may be numbered). Pigeons love this place too, and if you have kids you can buy feed and they'll land on your shoulders and arms.

Dongfanghong is Lanzhou's city square - it's a nice, open, and clean place in a very compact, and at times, very dirty city. It's a pretty place, full of decorative horticulture and there are underground shops nearby and a handful of restaurants. You can have your picture taken there, although, like Tiananmen, it's expensive, and also like Tiananmen, if you're a foreigner, your picture and info is sent to the police station (if you believe that kind of thing).

That little bit aside, it's a great place to spend an hour or two either by yourself or with friends!

Visit if you have the time!

We walked to the square from our hotel (The Ledison) and it was a nice concrete area with grass. We also enjoyed the underground mall that is located in the square. There were escalators to use. It seemed to go on forever and we enjoyed exploring there. In the underground mall there was a play area for kids and different vendors set up selling their wares.

I lived in Lanzhou for eight months in 2003 2004. The building I worked in looked on down on the square. Even in winter it was a pleasant place to walk around. The municipal city council kept it clean and tidy. The traffic and the noise of the city made this a nice place to visit. The Gansu Television centre was, though I don't know if it still is was in a building at one and at the other was a shopping centre. There is a 'MacDonald's' type of Hamburger place to right hand side, which I can remember their name now. Percsions? I think. If you are foreign visitor go to the coin market, you will have to ask directions. BUT haggle like hell with the vendors. It say that I visited this place in 2018 but that was the only date that I could put in.

This is one of the main squares of downtown Lanzhou, I found it a little under whelming especially the little fences meaning you can't walk on the grass! There was a good variety of western shops and at night there was a night market at the edge of it. One of those places you have to see to believe.

A large square outside a mall that includes Starbucks, Bread Talk, mid to high end shops and a movie theater. On a sunny day you can check out grandmas and grandchildren playing with bubbles and watch a performance by the towns' elderly performers.

Lanzhou is more renowned for pollution than anything else, but this is the nicest part of town. A great spot for people watching
