We were dropped off here by our guide for a couple of hours on our own. It was like a maze with streets going all directions. One can easily get lost in these busy streets lined with colorful shops and restaurants. All very interesting to see. We did not eat there but there seemed to be lots of choices for those who are into local street foods. Make sure to use the public restrooms first before exploring.

I came to Xiamen during the Golden Week. I did not purposely come to visit this `fishing village'. I was strolling my way from Xiamen University along the coastal beach and somewhere near Baicheng Beach, I saw a heavy crowd causing a traffic jam at the overhead bridge linking from the beach to the other side of the road.

Out of curiosity, I walked up to the overhead bridge and saw the crowd was pushing their way to cross the bridge to a heavily packed `shopping centre' across the other side of the road. I was puzzled what attract the crowd to this `Zeng Cuo An Village' until I walked into the alleys and saw with open eyes the bustling `Shilin Night Market' of this village.

Lines of food stalls occupied both sides of the narrow alleys and the crowd were like sardines. The narrow alleys were very well lit by sparkling neon lighting. The food vendors were competing at the top of their voices to attract their customers. The stall display were awesome and the gorgeous varieties of food were so tempting and mouthwatering. There were the stalls selling Ankara Turkey ice-cream, the Indian `flying saucers' of roti prata, barbequed seafood meats with sticks of cuttlefishes, Taiwanese snacks. There are also stalls selling mango fruit, coconut juices and tea.

The stalls were very clean, well maintained, hygienic and appealing. Although the crowd was so packed, you hardly heard incidents of pick-pockets trying their luck here.

I was delighted and amazed by the culinary displays and `exhibition' here. It is touristy and I think the food may not be that cheap, I found great joy and satisfaction just to mingle with the crowd and enjoyed seeing the specialty food and cuisine offered by each stall.

If you like wandering around night markets like Shilin Night Market in Taiwan, then this is another Chinese version of the Shilin Night Market. The food range is wide and spectacular. Only I could not find our Singapore food like satay, mee goring, mee rebus, etc at this place.

It is a pleasure to stroll along the windy Xiamen beach that is studded with palm trees, listening to the splashing of the waves against the shores, appreciating the view of the beautiful sunset as it disappeared in the horizon and then walked over to this atmospheric Zeng Cuo An Village to sample the gorgeous food here. .

There is absolutely no quiet time to visit Zeng Cuo An Village, it is quite simply full-on busy every day.
In my honest opinion it has been spoilt, in much the same way as Gulang Yu, and is a victim of its own success.
Many, many shops selling exactly the same food, drink and trinkets as the ones alongside. Everywhere seems to be owned by one or two large companies, the food-stalls are very like a Chinese MacDonalds or KFC, precisely the same product cooked and served in precisely the same way.
This used to be a fantastic place full of wonderful idiosyncratic shops and boutique hotels and guest-houses. It has now lost its charm almost entirely. Which is a great shame.
Having said that, I am just one foreigner compared to the hundreds of thousands of Chinese who flock here on a daily basis to have the cash vacuumed from their wallets in a very professional manner.

We took a cab from Pan Pacific hotel to this night market, which costed 29 RMB (4 USD) walking across the pedestrian bridge, we reached the night market. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the snacks. This night market is vibrant and full of tourists from all over China, everyone was cheerful and enjoying the cool evening browsing eating all sorts of snacks. We have been traveling extensively in China for the past fifteen years, which we leaned to have an opened mind and very glad to see that China is prospering and still maintaining its own local culture. Overall, we had good time at this lively night market; great atmosphere.

Tourist trap for street food. Xiamen’s a top domestic tourist destination: many of the “locals” you see are just as clueless as you and probably less well travelled. It shows in the crowds queuing for undercooked prata (called “Indian flying cakes”), in the lumpy octopus balls, and MSG porridge. If you want local food, explore the local restaurants instead. We spent close to the same amount on street food here in one night, as we did on fine dining (CNY400).

And yet we’d booked a hotel near this place so we found ourselves heading back for ice cream every night. It wasn’t even that good, or even cheap, but we needed snacks.

If you’re here for work, also note that you can buy all your souvenirs here - the tart, nougat, and pork slice shops are all the same.

This is a very touristy area with lots of restaurants / stree food vendors. We had lunch there and the food was good. However, between the Zhongshan Road walking street and Zeng Cuo An Village, you only need to go to one as they are quite similar... and the Zeng Cuo An Village is a bit out of the way.

Definitely the place to go to for dai pai dong!!! The place have no joke - hundreds of food stalls selling you snacks and meals and food and food and more food. You can buy tea as well as there are a lot of tea shops. A lot of it is taiwanese such as the bubble milk tea etc. A lot of other different shops like one which sold 'pirate' treasures with a nautical theme, shoes, teddy bears, japanese gifts and souvenirs, snacks, bars, and even karaoke etc.

You can easily get lost in here... thats all i have to say. But you can always eat your way out into the different streets etc.

Few shops with not much variety. Food looked ok but Unfortunately did not get to try. Did not seem too interesting. Perhaps expected too much from write up. Just found lacking.

I am absolutely baffled by the previous reviews. I still can't put my head around it. People told me this used to be a small fishing village some time ago, but now it is a prime example of a tourist trap. If you ever wondered how one looks like, just go there. We were quoted 40 RMB for 1 hour of tricycle. In other places in the city it was 40 RMB for the whole day. It is just a bunch of overpriced restaurants (we tried 2, they were both bad), repetitive souvenir shops (selling Gulangyu-based items!) and food/drink stalls with prices rivaling Gulangyu. Shameless. And it is definitely signed on the map and most people in Xiamen reccommended it to us (because it's famous). And yeah, there were lots of people there. Run as fast as you can. Nothing to see or do over there that you can't in any other part of Xiamen.

Although the taxi driver said there is nothing during the day time but when we got there, it was a blow. Lots of people, lots of local street food and lots of things to shop. It is right opposite a beach and it could be a good rest area.
