In memory of Dr Lin Qiao Zhi, the renowned gynecologist
Oct 2018
Dr Lin Qiao Zhi (1901 - 1983) was a pioneer gynecologist and obstetrician born in Gulangyu. A dedicated obstetrician, she had delivered more than 50,000 babies throughout her 60 year career with her hospital. She embarked on advanced medical research, studied overseas in Manchester, London and Vienna and contributed immensely to the modernization of gynecological practices in China. This Yu Park was built in 1984 in memory of her life and contributions. Sculptures of new-born babies, her statue and her Last Will book sculpture were erected and displayed around the park. There is an exhibition gallery depicting her numerous photos, artifacts and her life story. Gulangyu boasts of renowned pianists but the island is also proud of a great female gynecologist who dedicated her life for the many babies who were born in her hands. I saw in one of her quotations in the gallery: `The object of the physician is a real living human ... the medical treatment aimed at mending rather fixing. it is important to get close to the patients on a face to face basis rather than merely to be a skillful mechanic.' She always had that human touch for her patients and many of the babies she delivered were named after her by their parents. Gulangyu is just so unique, not only reputed for her scenery but also for the many eminent people who were born here and who dedicated their lives selflessly to the modernization of the motherland and humanity. As I walked out of the exhibition hall, an image of Goddess Guanyin conjured up in my mind. Her last will to donate all her savings to a nursing home and to use her dead body for anatomical study and to splash her ashes to the sea demonstrated the selfless spirit of a great doctor. Such selfless doctor dedicated to relieve the pains and sufferings of her patients and the deliveries of thousands of new born babies can only be the magical works of the Goddess of Mercy and I think she deserved the title of the Guanyin of modern China. The admission to the Garden is free. Learning the biography of this great gynecologist inspires me to appreciate better the meaning and philosophy of life.

Pleasant, But TIme Better Spent Elsewhere
Aug 2017
Xiamen Yu Park is a pleasant area for relaxation on Xiamen's main island. However, there are no special attractions there, and you need to bring your own food. That being said, it is not a bad place to go. But there are better spots to spend some quiet time.
