Beautiful, tranquil hideaway
Nov 2011
We first visited this Park two years ago when the Xiamen local government were obviously trying to promote its existance by offering a free visit to 100 people. It was quite simply a stunning place to go away from the bustle and noise of Xiamen city. Beautiful lake/reservoirs with clear water streams alongside well laid-out paths and walkways through woods and bamboo forest. The only thing that spoilt the initial visit were the Chinese............ There are huge signs at the entrance telling you how beautiful this place is and asking politely to avoid smoking, spitting and dropping litter. So when 99 Chinese arrive the first thing that 98 of them did was clear their lungs and spit everywhere followed by having a quick cigarette or ten so that they would then need to spit again.... After walking for several hours we then stopped at one of the beautiful picnic spots for lunch where the Chinese, almost to a person, chose to throw their rubbish and food scraps on the ground around the tables and on the tables themselves despite there being trash cans available within 3 metres of every spot. All of the above apart Tianzhu was still a beautiful place to go then and now. Thousands of butterflies, birds and other wildlife to observe and almost no visitors. On our most recent visit I think my wife and I might well have been the only two visitors in the whole place. Wear comfortable shoes, there is a lot of walking to do. You can buy food there but we took our own. You can also go fishing there are some specially constructed jetties for anglers not too far from the entrance. The one major drawback to this park is access. If you do not have a car it must be very difficult, I have no idea if you can get a bus from Xiamen at this time. This is the only reason I do not give Tianzhu Mountain Forest Park a 5-star rating.
