Hello everybody.

I am traveling soon to Xiamen. I am going to spend one semester at Xiamen University. I have never been in China before nor in the Xiamen, I would be very thankful if somebody of you can give me some information what is the best mean of transportation from Xiamen International Airport to Xiamen University? Is that taxi or bus or something else? What mean do you suggest me?
Can you give me some advices in order to avoid some risky situtations when I arrive in Xiamen.

Thank you in advance!

Snuggled between the Five Old Man Mountains and the sea, XMU is widely regarded as China's most beautiful campus (Wuhan University perhaps being the only serious contender). Enjoy the Chinese/Western architecture dating from 1921, as well as the beautiful lotus lake and more modern architecture, and have a meal at Yifu Lou restaurant (beside Lotus Lake).

The university is in the center. You can enter only by permission so not everyone can see it. Inside are old and new buildings of the faculties from ancient and modern times. The structure of this university is really great. By the main entrance you can find some other attractions to see so dont miss them.

If you are close to the university, just go and have a walk inside to see how a Chinese university campus looks like. It's a nice place overall but nothing special. I don't recommend going if there are long queues to get inside. If you are not a student you must register using your passport and sometimes during the weekend it can be overcrowded

Don't go without an escort or someone to call security for you. Outstanding university, beautiful campus, but access is strictly enforced.

This sprawling university is nice to stroll around and admire the beautiful campus. Be informed that they don't allow visitors to enter the campus between 1 to 5 pm. There is also a queue and can be very long. So try to avoid falling in line 30 minutes before closing time and get disappointed. The gate opposite Nanputuo temple seems less crowded than the main gate.

Okay ... to be fair, the grounds are well maintained and looks okay ... but it's just a university, and for practical purposes, there's nothing to do except walking around ...

Why such a high ranking on TA?

Xiamen University is a must-see if you find yourself in this lovely city. It has a great reputation as a place for locals to gain higher education and a great place for foreigners to study Chinese language. But, even if you're not a student, I think it is a beautiful place to walk around and meet people. The cool thing about being on a college campus is that there are always plenty of young locals that are anxious to speak english with you. You might even find yourself a great local tour guide and new Chinese friends. It is a beautiful campus!!

Unfortunately we did not make prior arrangement to visit the university thus unable to go into the university grounds.

Those who wish to visit the university must make prior arrangement otherwise you will be denied entry. This university is located next to nanputor temple. Worthy to spend some time there.

From the gate can see the great architecture buildings and this is also well-known as romantic university

My great grandfather was one of the philanthropists who donated his money to the building of this university. He was a native of this city before he ventured to Singapore for a living. When I came to Xiamen, I have three wishes. I hope to visit Gulangyu, my grandfather's hometown and Xiamen University.

I managed to obtain a ferry ticket and had a full tour of Gulanyu island. I was taken aback by the huge size of Xiamen city. I thought I could find my grandfather's hometown easily but I was at a lost in my search and regretted not making a thorough research.

But I was determined to visit Xiamen University. I went to Nanputuo Temple 南普陀寺 and one of the entrances into Xiamen University was just beside the temple. I saw a crowd gathered outside the entrance and all visitors were rejected from entry. No one seem to know the reason. I tried to persuade the guards for me to enter but in vain.

I walked to the vicinity of the beach and saw similar scenarios at the other entrances. One female offered to take me into the campus but for a token sum but I rejected the offer.

I then made a second attempt, marched to the security guards and told him of my intention. Simultaneously, there were two students entering the campus and mistakenly thinking that I was brought by them for some research project, he allowed me to enter. That moment, I was filled with joy and I thought it must be the blessing from my great grandfather. My purpose was to see the beauty of this university which was built from the sweat and tears of the overseas Chinese.

Xiamen University really marvels me with her great scenic location. She faces the sea and has a long stretch of golden sandy beach with a wide range of facilities and activities. Her close proximity with Nanputuo Temple means having the blessing from the Buddha and the hill behind the temple made a great hiking spot.

There are many other fascinating attractions nearby and include the Xiamen Botanical Garden that surrounds her with much greenery. There is an abundant supply of eateries and restaurants at the nearby food malls and beaches.

I went to the Shantou University when I was in Shantou but I found Shantou University pale in her `fengshui' location in comparison with this university. The late Tan Kah Kee, the philanthropist behind the construction of this university must have put in much painstaking effort in searching for the most ideal fengshui spot for the university.

The lake in the campus provides great relaxation for the tense study environment. I saw study rooms filled with students engrossed in their homework and research. The student canteens also provide economic food and there are mini-marts and supermarket in the campus compound.

I visited the old hall where the statue of Tan Kah Kee was erected. Tan is a great philanthropist and educationist who had made great contributions to the building of modern China. Just behind the statue are exhibition halls that display old photos and elaborated history of Xiamen University. There are also exhibition halls at the second floor that displayed the life of Lu Xun, a great Marxist writer and a lecturer with the university.

The old buildings studded among the scenic parks and greenery appear very unique and invoke a sense of the memories of the past. I noticed a café near the stadium area that is decorated in a Nanyang style, gives me a nostalgic feeling of our past. I like the design of the stadium which resembled the Greek renaissance architectural style.

Xiamen University has a rich history since it was founded in 1921. A lot to explore and see if you are in the campus. It is part of the many attractions nearby which you should explore in one short within a day. Hope the guards at the entrance allows you in.
