Great Views.

Our mini cab dropped us off here (after the ride up the hill). Check out the 1000 year old tree to the left of the gate way. Keep on the wooden walkway for a lovely walk. Lots of viewing platforms to enjoy the views and get out of the heat. Try and go during the week - as weekend is packed with locals.

Take Bus Route No. 63 and get off at "Cryptomeria Cypress King Park" Stop to reach Cryptomeria Cypress King Park in Fuzhou Kuliang Scenic Zone. As the park of the highest altitude in Fujian, it is famous for a Cryptomeria Cypress King which is 30m in height, about 10m in circumference and 3.2m in diameter. The park has a path leading to "Lancui Pavilion" which has a couplet saying "Sit and enjoy pines and valleys; stand by the railings and observe the lights faraway". It is said that the zigzagging rivers in downtown Fuzhou turned the city into Chinese character "福" when observed from Kuliang westward.

Visit the Ancient Cryptomeria Cypress King and his princes and princesses

On Gushan mountain in the Guling (Kuliang) Scenic Area across from the main parking lot is the main gate of the “Cryptomeria King” Park, where a huge and imposing 1,300 year old cypress reigns over the area. The tree has been worshipped as a Venerable Tree by the local population for many years. I was very interested in the altar at the back of the tree, with its cylinder of fortune sticks. The tradition is to ask the Cypress King a question, and then shake out a fortune stick to see the answer. This King is only one of many cypresses on the mountain, which are native to China and have the elegance and grace of Giant Sequoias, although they are only distant cousins. This is one of several sites in the Guling Scenic Area, so if you want to visit the Park, you can also visit the other sites at the same time. It makes a wonderful weekend or one day outing, depending on how much time you have. The Diamondream Bookstore and Café is at the back of the park, and we were so delighted to be able to sit there on the mountainside and drink latte and have a Club Sandwich and really good pizza. There is also an excellent hotel, Green Forest Hotel, within walking distance, and other hotels for visitors scattered nearby. We loved our weekend there.
