We had a guide who explained the history, which was helpful. There are shops and restaurants in the area and it's only a couple of blocks from the water. This is well worth the visit.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 30, 2024

- ITRT45,452 contributionsMunoz Gamero SquarePunta Arenas sits on the north shore of the Strait of Magellan, named after the Portuguese explorer who established the sea route around South America in 1520. The city has been, and still is, a gateway to Antarctica. In Munoz Gamero Square, the Magellan monument is located at the center of the square near the cathedral and town hall. It commemorates the 400th anniversary of Magellan’s voyage. Here you will see magnificent mansions dating back to the wool industry, If you look closely at the monument, one of the people has a very shiny foot. It is believed if one kisses or rub the foot of the “Indian” figure it guarantees they will one day return to Punta Arenas while others believe it will bring good luck and calm seas as you pass through the Drake Passage.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 5, 2024

The Plaza Muñoz Gamero, also known as the Plaza de Armas, is the main public space in Punta Arenas. The square was declared a Typical Zone in 1991, by the Council of National Monuments. In the center there is a bronze sculpture that was inaugurated in 1920 and that represents the navigator Hernando de Magallanes. It is a busy square with lots of locals and tourists. Most travelers in Punta Arenas will visit this square. Certainly very highly recommended to walk around the square and taking some pics.

Plaza Muñoz Gamero is the central plaza in the heart of Punta Arenas. Surrounded by historic buildings (and some terrible touristy stores), the plaza itself is a nice peaceful place to sit, relax and people watch. Magellan's statue is in the center of the plaza and the beautiful Palacio Sara braun is off to one corner. Generally, there are vendors selling locally made products, such as woolen items, as well as some farmers selling some produce. Definitely worth a quick look around the park (it's not terribly big) and a terrific "meeting place" if you're traveling with a group. It's Punta Arenas....you can't get lost!

This is an attractive square surrounded by historic buildings and vendors. There are many charming kiosks and a parmacy near by. Historic Union club on the corner

Like many people who have left reviews, we arrived by cruise ship for the day and enjoyed walking around Punta Arenas. While we have been here before, this was our first time really exploring the town and Plaza Munoz Gamreo should not be missed. In the center of the town, the central part is a nice place to sit, rest and enjoy the city. Vendors line the Eastern side of the part with booths selling mostly handmade crafts (and some less authentic Chinese made items as well). The status of Magellan in the center of the square is the definite focal point, but the benches and the people watching was far more interesting to me. Definitely worth a stop/visit if your in Punta Arenas.

Main "park" attraction is the monument of the Selk'nam Indian. If you kiss the feet, you'll have good luck! Also the monument of Hernando de Magallanes. A mgnificent plaze with archectured building surrounding.

As plazas go, this one is quite beautiful in the city’s location at the base of Chile and situated close to the majestic Strait of Magellan. The surrounding buildings each side of the plaza are from that era where the town’s prosperity saw mansions, banks and a beautiful Cathedral spring up.
While we strolled around the square, we noticed the beautiful green conifers, the flowering garden beds, the impressive monument to Magellan, the souvenir stalls and where possibly our canine friends outnumbered the residents sitting around!
One of the most notable buildings is the exclusive Club de la Unión and if you want a taste of the interior then a downstairs tavern is open to the public. The beautiful French - inspired Palacio Sara Braun (with museum), is a stunning heritage building reminiscent of this city’s quiet wealth.
Sitting west of the plaza is Sacred Heart Cathedral Church where the single bell tower rises over the square. The church’s colour is a gorgeous creamy yellow and can be visited most days. Several restaurants, cafes and shops add a modern, urban flavour to the plaza but if you like remarkable architecture then you will enjoy walking in the historical heart of Punta Arenas - Plaza Muñoz Gamero.

We were on a cruise ship thus only had a few hours in this very nice port city of Punta Arenas. This makes our third stop at this location. At the square there are local venders who set up their wares in wooden wagons that are all uniform around the large concrete circle that encircles the monument in the center. Lots of tourist in this area looking at the venders items. just across the street is a very nice restaurant and on an opposite corner is an old church that was under renovation the day we stopped by. Just a few blocks away if the waterfront where smaller cruise ships dock. There is also a casino and several eating places. All of this is very nice and clean. Back at the square you can easily walk to the downtown area as it is only a block away. We stopped at the Chocolate Cafe which offered free internet plus some very tasty pastries and candy. This is a very neat small town.

I have been thinking further about your question. I see you may be travelling with young children. Nao Victoria is all outdoors, along the Magellan Straight, so I strongly recommend that for your family. They can climb all over the ships, get fresh air etc. We took a cab ( about 10-12 min ride) and had the driver wait for us an hour+. I think this would be most appropriate for your group. I also saw many families in the Salesian Museum which you could walk to. Maybe go to NV first with a cab, have him bring you back to Salesian M on the return to save time? But do check the hours at Salesian bec I think they close for a fairly long lunch break.
