It receives visitors from all over the world and from Chile, interested in the history of the southern tip of the continent, the local fauna and flora, as well as in enjoying the ecosystem of Punta Santa Ana. It also offers a souvenir shop and a café with local products.

My family of 4 had a beautiful experience visiting this place. One gets to know this area up close and appreciate it’s unique history and natural beauty. Very well organized with young, trained and English speaking staff, it was memorable. The walks along the coast were also wonderful with some spectacular sights . Certainly would very highly recommend visiting this place to any traveler.

This was a good day! It is very well done, scenery is lovely and the tourist guide of the fort was excellent. My recommendation: don't book a tour to take you there! Go by yourself with public bus3! There are guided tours inside that are managed by the fort and museum. I felt cheated when I found out you could do all by yourself and have more time to see everything and even more places the paid tour in the city doesn't tell you! Make it a whole day and go to Puerto famine after you learn it's history!

This 600-acre park on Santa Ana Point has a fascinating assortment of national historical monuments and archaeological sites. We reached it by tour bus from our cruise ship, docked in Punta Arenas an hour north (56 kilometers).

Enter the park through Porteria Laguna Honda. As you travel along Santa Ana Point, which extends 2.5 miles into the Strait of Magellan, you'll come to a picturesque photo stop, Los Torreones (The Turrets), the old park entrance.
.
Stop next at the park's museum, Museo del Estrecho (see my review, "Part museum, part lookout"), where you'll enjoy modern exhibits and nice views from the terrace of the Strait of Magellan and of Port Famine (see my review, "Not much food then, not much to see now").

The highlight of our visit was Fuerte Bulnes, rebuilt a hundred years after its original founding to stake Chile's claim to the Strait of Magellan (see my review, "Not a straight shooter"). Near Fuerte Bulnes, you'll find O'Higgins Lighthouse (see my review, "Showing the way"), Forest of the Winds Trail and Mirador del Estrecho (see my review, "Wide-open view").

Fort Bulnes is the historic reconstruction of the earliest settlement by Europeans at the southern tip of South America. In good weather it offers beautiful views of the surrounding bays and islands. It is easy to access by a daily tour leaving from the park headquarters building on Av. Mayo about 100 meters north of Av. Independencia, very near the cruise ship tender dock. The park headquarters offers a 1030am tour of the Fort for 20,000CP (about 33 USD) including minibus and entry fee, or a combined city and fort tour at 900am for 30,000 CP (about 50 USD). Both tours return around 300pm. For more info see the park website www.phipa.cl and for reservations email reservas@patagoniahsa.com. The tour van, driver, and guide are top notch. A new visitor center at the fort is currently under construction, but the present visitor center, cafe, and bathrooms are already quite nice. I did this tour as a less crowded alternative to the usual penguin tours when I was on a recent Cape Horn cruise. I am glad I did it.

I visited this site during the February of 2015. The weather was cool and windy with an occasional light rain. In Spite of the weather this is a beautiful site overlooking the Strait. We followed all the hiking trails around the site with no problem. The history of the site is quite amazing knowing that survival through the winter was accomplished without the conveniences of today's technology. I highly recommend making this a mandatory stop during your visit to this region of the country. The drive from Punta Arenas to the site has just as many wonderful views and photo opportunities.

The fort was very interesting; some of the buildings are built out of logs in the same way that the original fort was. There's also a lot of information, in English as well as Spanish. It's well set out so in every building you can read about it, and the main building has a larger information section to read more about the history. The only drawback was the extortionate entrance fee. 12 000 pesos for a foreigner (8000 for Chileans) which is about ÂŁ13. Although it was good there's just no way it should be this expensive - not sure how they can justify this price.

I guess that, as a historical site, it is worth visiting, although the fort is actually fake. The whole thing was built as a replica. The worst thing though is the INSANE entrance fee of 12000 CLP, equivalent to about 20 usd. Per person, that is!!! I mean, I know that many attractions in the area are expensive, but 12000 pesos to see a fake fort was really quite offputting.

The guided tour was relatively good though, and te 40 minutes that takes are included in the 12000 pesos. Per person.

The highway to the park is good but once you get into the park there are LOTS of potholes so be careful driving. The museum was well done and there is a great vista spot for pictures of Magellan's Strait. The old fort is interesting. Take the trail behind the fort to the lookout point - not a bad walk.

This was described as a half day tour but stretched a little longer (9.00am to 3.30pm). A scenic drive along the bay and nice to see lots of summer flowers in the fields. A good way to see some of the local countryside if you are not spending time exploring the region. The fort has tours in English (included in the entry) and it was well worth hanging around for as it made the place come alive. Ditto with the visitors centre/museum (also houses a coffee shop and gift shop). Ask about times when you buy your entry ticket. I learnt a lot more of interest about the region than I found in the guide books. It is an exposed place and if you are not on an organized tour how long you stay will probably depend on the weather. Cheaper rates for Chileans than overseas visitors.
