About
We are an adventure tourism company based out of Puerto Natales, in southern Patagonia, Chile. We offer private excursions and expeditions around the region. Madre Roca was born out of an effort to expand tourism horizons in Patagonia. Its founders, Claire and Felipe, believe that the tourism industry has been detrimental to the environment in Torres del Paine National Park, due to the lack of environment friendly infrastructures, but also the lack of options accessible to the fast-growing number of travelers. Claire and Felipe are both certified guides with much experience in the region. We strive to deliver to our guests a different and authentic experience, far from the peak-season crowds. Madre Roca distinguishes itself for prioritizing sustainable practices, working with small local companies, in a plastic-free environment, and fomenting a close and unique contact with nature.

I traveled to Torres del Paine National Park from New York to spend a week hiking. Claire was an exceptional guide with a sharp sense of humour and thorough knowledge of the park. She guided me along the W trek as well as along numerous hidden beauties of the park -- away from the main trails. Claire has a truly beautiful soul. She made my experience unforgettable and I will forever cherish the memories.

Merci ma belle. J'ai passé un super séjour avec toi, et je suis contente que ça t'ai plu. La montagne, c'est toujours mieux avec des amis. Reviens me voir quand tu veux :)

Felipe and Claire were our guides on the W Trek, Torres Del Paine, Chile. We were a team of 3 couples over 60 of variable fitness and a common interest in the geography, flora and fauna, culture and history of the region. We all love to come away feeling fitter and stronger with a good knowledge of our host country/ region. With this in mind, Felipe and Claire were a perfect fit to lead our trekking adventure. Felipe is a local with an passionate and learned knowledge of the region: geology, history, culture and politics! Claire knows how to read and motivate people, especially on the long 24km treks. She loves to nerd out identifying bird life and plants. She too is a very strong and accommodating guide leader. And has a great sense of humor. They compliment each other to provide a full trekking experience tailored to the groups needs. They are very respected in the guiding community and gave us tips on other things to do after the trek, eg our El Chalten experience, that proved spot on. They introduced us to some celebrity climbers who happened to be at camp. They are very respectful, good humored, knowledgeable and solve logistical and administrative problems very efficiently (we had paid for admir and were allocated a tent at one camp - No problemo).
With this knowledge and experience of Felipe and Claire aka Madre Roca Guiding, if we had been going as a couple, I would have directly contacted them to plan our trip.
Key expertise:local guides, comprehensive knowledge of region, very professional, fun loving, photography experts, geology, plants and birdwatching, power trekkers (if you’re looking for speed).

Felipe and Fiore did a fantastic job guiding the group of varied ages and abilities through W Trek. They did a great job with maintaining appropriate pace so that each person could complete the day's hike and also enjoy the the many beautiful and interesting points they highlighted. They were very knowledgeable on the nature and history of the environment and the park.
Through good humour and fostering a team environment on and off the track they made everyone really comfortable with each other and have a great time.
Excellent experience, highlight of our South America holiday, would definitely do again!

Felipe was my guide on W trek and men, he is so passionate and knowledgeable about Patagonia , it was amazing ! This guy not only knows Patagonia inside out and has been guiding it for I believe 10+ years but also he is a geologist (actually studied at Stanford!) . You will have tons of fun and you will learn a lot of things along the way . He knows what he is doing, you will feel super safe in any kind of conditions with him.
Felipe is amazing and if I ever have a chance to go back to Patagonia, without a doubt I will hire him.

I had the chance to travel to Patagonia last year. We started our trip in Argentina with our main Guide Rodrigo Flores Solovera. We then travelled in to Chile for our first weeks W trek on arrival at Eco camp we met our Chillan Guide Claire Hourticq from Madre Roca Patagonia. This Lady along with Rod made this part of the trip so GOOD. Claire new every answer to every question I had and her knowledge of this part of the world was second to no one. I wish Madre Roca Patagonia all the best after these difficult times and I hope we will see you again.

Thank you Paul for your kind words and support. I am lucky to do the work I do and get to meet incredible people, including you and your wonderful Iwona. Thank you for the great times, and for the heavy metal CDs you sent to Felipe's house. He was so happy to receive them. Hope to be able to come to England to visit soon.
Un abrazo!

We were in the Torres Del Paine National Park in Patagonia with the family recently. Felipe Sunkel who runs Madre Roca Guide Services came highly recommended, and it was one of the best decisions we made. A Geologist by training, Felipe was very knowledgeable. Took us on awesome remote trails less frequented by tourists. Felipe's passion for all things Patagonia and his infective enthusiasm made the hikes and the time we spent with Felipe thoroughly enjoyable.
We landed up with a flat tyre on our SUV on our last day while we were at the Lago Grey region. Felipe got the Engineering Department at the Rio Seranno Hotel to get the flat tyre fixed, stayed with us right until the problem was sorted out completely and then took leave. Clearly something Felipe did not need to do !!
Easily the very best guide experience we have had anywhere in the world.
Keep it up Felipe. All the best to you and Claire at Madre Roca.

Hi Sri!
I am so glad you enjoyed the off-the-beaten-path we offer! Thank you! I had a great time with you guys as well, we had great "patagonian" weather!
It was a great pleasure to help you solving the flat tire issue. People are very willing to help others in Patagonia in general.
Thanks again, I am humbled to have your support and I am thankful for your amazing review.
We will do our best, say hi to the team please!
Felipe.

Claire, Felipe and Hans guided a group of us (ages 30’s to 70’s) through a weeks worth of activities and adventures in Torres del Paine and surrounding areas. Their knowledge of the geology, flora, fauna and history of the area and their willingness to share that knowledge made the trip extra special. Their passion for their country and its environment along with their love of the outdoors created an amazing experience and their sense of humor was the icing on the cake. Highly recommended.

My two buddies and I were supposed to hike the O-Circuit, but our trip kicked off with a logistical nightmare (delayed flight/missed connection) that caused us to arrive in Chile a day later than expected. Even though we we're really bummed out at first, Felipe rose to the occasion and flat out made it work for us. He took us down the road less traveled and the fact that we were not able to complete the entire O-Circuit turned out to be total blessing in disguise. Honestly we could not have planned it better if we tried and we owe it all to Felipe and Claire.
Aside from being EXTREMELY knowledgeable about every aspect of Patagonia, Torres Del Paine and geology, Felipe is an expert at living and loving life. Hiring him and Claire truly made our trip. They were the most gracious of hosts and paid super attention to the details. The food they provided was delicious and their porters were awesome as well. We had such great times winding down after each long day of hiking.
As one would expect, I have many fond memories hiking Torres Del Paine with a couple lifelong buddies, but I'd be lying if I said the majority of those great memories don't involve Felipe as well. After we left the park and parted ways with Felipe (only to meet up with him and Claire for dinner the night before we left), we sat down at a bar in Puerto Natales... While bantering with the bartender, he said you don't need a guide to hike Torres Del Paine... I could not disagree more. I'm beyond grateful that we had one because I truly believe that everyone needs a little Felipe in their life.

Hi NIck!
We are so please to hear that you guys had an amazing time here in Patagonia! We were glad to help you, as soon as you told us that you were going to arrive later than expected, Claire and I just decided to provide you assistance. We are glad that it went well!
Our porters, Cristóbal and Andrés, love this National and their service is the best! It is a great pleasure to work with them, as they cook great food, and they are a lot of fun to be around.
You 3 folks are so much fun! I can't wait to see you again. Thank you so much for enjoying your trip with us!
Best,
Felipe.

My wife and I spent a week at Ecocamp Patagonia and had the great fortune to have Felipe as our guide exploring the Grey Glacier and Lazo Weber. Not only did we go on some of the best hikes and see some of the most extraordinary nature we've ever experienced, but we learned so much about Chilean culture, history and politics, and the geology of Torres del Paine (Felipe is a geologist by training). We were able to practice our Spanish with Felipe for hours on end and Felipe taught us many Chilenismos that made us feel like locals in no time. Felipe is "la raja" (if you don't know what that means you'll have to book a trip with Felipe) and we couldn't imagine a better introduction to Patagonia.

Hi Brian!
Thank you so much for such incredible words! Hope Sophia and you come back to Chile one day to practice your amazing chilean vocabulary and accent haha! I had such a great time with you guys!
I am grateful that while we enjoyed the beauty of Torres del Paine views, weather and all it offers, we got to talk a lot about Chilean culture, history, politics and more! I appreciate you guys talked to me about your life and what was going on in the USA post-pandemics. Hope to see you in the future!
WE ARE BACK!

Excellent guides! Claire and Felipe really made our trip to Patagonia special. Their English is impeccable which was really handy as we only speak a little Spanish. They are both fun, professional, upbeat and extremely knowledgeable about the area, geology, hikes, excursions and even had some great ideas to pivot to when the weather wasn’t cooperating. Would 100% recommend Madre Roca if you are coming down to Patagonia. You won’t regret it.
