A must see in Concepción. The Pinacoteca - Casa del Arte is a small art museum on the University of Concepción campus (near Plaza Peru). The mural is amazing, capturing expressing Latin American history from Precolombian to the 1970s. Excellent for taking pictures, especially the cactus with the Chilean national flower.
On the second floor there is a good collection of late 19th century early 20th century Chilean art--one of the best in the country. There are also rotating expositions.
The museum has a small café with good coffee. The small store is disappointing.

We especially enjoyed the mural in the entry. The art museum is quite easy to visit with interesting exhibits that seem to be contemporary. Doesn't take a lot of time to wander through the 2 floors to enjoy Chilean art at it's finest.
The only problem we found is that the lighting is not 'wonderful' in order to really see the art carefully.

The impressive painting called Iresencia de América Latina (Presence of Latin America), or Integración de América Latina (Integration of Latin America) is painted by Mexican artist Jorge González Camarena. It shows the history of Latin Amerika as a 300m2 mural demonstrating unity and brotherhood of the different Latin American cultures. It is really impressive and there are lots of details to discover if you take your time. Free admisssion.

Wondered why we’d stopped off in Concepción on the journey to Punta Arenas to explore Patagonia, until we visited the Casa del Arte gallery to see the magnificent mural at the entrance. This was worth a detour, and is truely worthy of its status as a national treasure as of 2009. The modern day masters who created this work will so deserve their place in history.

The Casa del Arte housed a very good collection of Chilean art, but the standout piece is the extraordinary mural, representing all of Latin America, not just Chile. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting it, and it was certainly worth the day trip across from Chillán to do so. very symbolic of the five hundred years or so since the Europeans arrived. (I enjoyed wandering around the rest of the University and then the city afterwards.)

At the corner of the university, you can find the finest and biggest piece of art of the area. It is historical and beautiful. Sometimes they offer exhibitions too besides from the Mural. You can buy souvenirs here. It is the perfect way to end a tour in the most beautiful university of Chile.

Honestly, the rest of the museum was probably a 3 or 4 star worthy event, but the mural in the main room is remarkable and truly worth a visit all by itself.

Here's a good variety of exhibitions and an especially interesting one of 90's figurative painters. At least one surprising idea! Upstairs portraits include Marcial Plaza Ferrand whose specialty was beautiful women -- a treat for guys. Entrance dominated by leftist themes in a mural donated by Mexico. Overall, very well done.

The mural is amazing and there was no entrance fee. When we went the selection was limited mainly to the mural, still worth it.
