Stone drawings on hill sides - used for directions (they think… more is unknown than known about these pictures). These are smaller and less well known versions of Peru’s Nazcar lines. They are created on the sides of hills by one of two methods. Some are additions - the mosaic technique where the image is created with rocks. The others are subtractions - where the image is scratched into the side of the hills.

The petroglyphs are on private property, so one cannot get close to them, however, there is a mirador created for viewing them, from which you have a decent view over the 2 sets of petroglyphs. One shows alpacas and birds, the other shows a greater variety of shapes: easiest to recognise are the human and the snake. Also some alpacas and arrows. Finally, 2 dancing figures with a mythical animal. They probably date from between 400 and 1000.

We arrived in Arica, Chile via Celebrity Infinity (Canal & South America) a great cruise; but I digress! Arica is a FRIENDLY/SAFE city. My bride wanted to shop (The best lowest prices for Alpaca etc.) I wanted to see the Geoglyphs! Start at Café del Mar; great coffee, they take dollars & free Wifi! From there shop until she drops. Then hire a cab ($15.00) to go see the Geoglyphs (The tour was $50.00?each...you can do the math) After all the shopping and Geoglyphing was completed we still had time to "Walk-the-streets"! Arica has a European feeling! We walked into a local "SPOT"! We were warmly welcomed by the "locals"! I don't think many tourists stop in here...We tried our Spanish and they showed-off their English but mostly their hospitality....one of the high-points of our entire cruise!

We saw a bunch of geoglyphs in Azapa Valley and Lluta Valley and this one was the best. It's a short taxi ride from Arica and can be combined with visits to el Museo Arquelogico San Miguel de Azapa and the handicraft village (Poblado Artesanal).

This was very impressive as a first geoglyphs site, but after seeing dozens of others (all amazingly well preserved if they're really >500 years old) I'm not so sure this one was that amazing. It is quite close to the side of the road, however. By the way, it's on A-33, not Ruta 11.

The petroglyphs are easy to see from the road, but park well of the road to see them well and for photographs. Because mornings are often overcast, an afternoon viewing will show up better in the photos. This is also the area for olives, and there are a few farms nearby where you can buy olives and olive oil made on the premises.

Chilean born, 1500 BC, one of the most enigmatic geoglyphs parks, highlights their shamans dancing with horn on their heads (when America did not exist in animals with horns), these leading a group of dancing flames of all sizes, other figures anthropomorphic (a pregnant and phallus figure), all this in the desert and on the Azapa Valley, walking toward the bottom of the desert are more of this kind. An undiscovered treasure

these are awesome to visit . They are like the lines in Peru but can be seen from the ground because they are on a slope and you can get above a few of then on a small hill. sorta like seeing the ruins in mexico

Basically you’ll see some images of animals and human forms made from volcanic rock stones on the hillside but you will need your binoculars or serious camera zoom lenses for a better view.
