Easy to get to by colectivo taxi, about 25 minutes. Beautifully curated. It followed the peoples of this coastal area for thousands of years. The "mummies" are the draw, but the exhibits, history, and anthropology are the reward. There are far more mummies in the...More

We're not burying the lede here: that's what this place is. The Chinchorros had a hard go of it with life expectancy in the low 30s, largely due to lead poisoning and other hazards of living 7,000 years ago. The lead made carrying babies to...More

The exhibit is excellent, but it is hard to get to this place. Also, the museum is too dark and tickets waaay too expensive. The surroundings are beautiful.

It is extremely interesting to visit this museum. You get to see the oldest mummies in the world and as interesting as it is, it is also heartbreaking (you get to see mummies that were stillborn and their mothers have kept them). I was very...More

Michael Palin, in his otherwise excellent travel book 'Full Circle', travelled to Arica but didn't mention anything except the train journey to la Paz. How could he overlook the Chinchorro mummies, the oldest mummies in the world and twice as old as anything in Egypt?...More

The mummies are in glass but very visible and there are many of them. Not something you see everyday and a must see when in Arica

Great place to take your family and learn about one of the oldest civilizations in the world! A must see attraction if you are in the area.

Oldest mummies in the world are here and the story of how they were made. Never thought about S America as a place for mummies, but these really helped tell the story of the history of the area with the artifacts left behind.
