We went just before lunch at the end of February. Only saw a couple of hummingbirds in nests - we were a bit out of season. No mosquitos. The place is operated by people who obviously love the animals which are all around - they all looked very loved and had been given lots of opportunities of the shade. Lots of settees and sofas and machinery and artifacts around the site.

What is this place?
This is the quietest place in Azapas Valley because of a house, which is the main residence of at least 4 different hummingbird species, that's why it has its name, but also other birds and even a peculiar furry-friend walking around. It was full decored with native plants and other bring from other places and different assets to relax and enjoy just the sound of the birds, you would want to see these little animals, so being quiet is a must in order to get close to them.
Very important: You should go early in the morning, to get to see more birds, it opens at 9:00 A.M. or in the evening before 20:00 P.M (that's the close time)
How much is it?
For kids, the main entrances are for free.
Adults, have to pay 1,000 Chilean pesos.
How to get there?
If you don't have your own car? In downtown Arica, in the streets surrounding 'Carlos Ibañez del Campo' park, next to the Arica's Casino. You can find yellow-colored cars passing by the Chacabuco street, these cars are named "colectivos" and they pick you and charge you 1,300 Chilean pesos per person per ride, to get to the Hummingbird sanctuary.
Another option is that you get to the Arica's bus station (Av. Diego Portales 948) You can take a bus directed to San Miguel de Azapa, for a charge about 1.000 Chilean pesos, per person.
With car: follow the A-27 rout, which goes through the valley and gets to the Azapa Valley

The owner provides a great tour, you’ll see hummingbirds and many other birds at every turn. She has a great collection of plants that would wet the appetite of any botanist. We ended up giving her a tip at the end as we felt that 1000 pesos was way too cheap for a personalised tour.

Touted as the "Hummingbird Park" we were interested and arrived in the afternoon. We saw one hummingbird and were told the birds are out in the morning. We were then given a tour of the facility which included where they were growing mayacua (passion fruit) and various collections of (what most politely could be called) junk. The place has a lot of possibilities and could easily be an attraction. Unfortunately, as of now it is not.

A bit hard to find but once you are there, you will enjoy this peaceful setting and of course lots of hummingbirds. A small restaurant as well to. Plan in for a few quiet hours and just relax.

Excellent place to visit - the name of the place is a little ambiguous - these are wild, in some cases migratory hummingbirds, that are attracted here by the garden. You are guided through the garden (they don't really want you wandering off on your own), but you get a good view of lots of hummingbirds, up close. Note it is difficult to find (not signposted) from the main road.

The sanctuary is a lovely place with lots of gorgeous plants and birds. I was advised to either go in the morning or the evening as this was supposedly when the hummingbirds were most active. I arrived there at 10:00 (it is open from 9:00 to 20:00) and stayed for 1 hour. I had about 10 hummingbird sightings total, but only two close-up. Mostly you see them flitting overhead. And if you look carefully you will see there tiny nests in the tree branches.
I had never seen hummingbirds before, so I was quite happy with my experience there.
There are lots of couches and chairs to chill and one can wander around freely. I paid 1000 pesos, was pointed in the direction of the garden, and left to my own devices. There is also a pet llama tied down on the edge of the garden, an aviary with lots of budgerians, lovebirds, finches etc. and there are chickens wandering around.
I spent a pleasant hour at the sanctuary and took some nice shots of hummingbirds and lots of other birdlife (croaking ground dove, west peruvian dove, rufous-collared sparrow, ...) as well as the beautiful flowering plants.
I strongly recommend to bring mosquito spray/repellent though, as they tried to eat me alive!

How to get there and back: Easiest way is to use a "colectivo" (a kind of communal taxi) from "Carlos Ibañez del Campo" park in downtown Arica. These "colectivo" cars are all yellow, have a sign saying "Azapa" on top, and leave from the corner of Chacabuco and Patricio Lynch street on the south side of the park. It costs about 1100 pesos one way and they will drop you off directly in front of the sanctuary. Normally there is a bit of a wait until the car is full and then you are off. To get back I just walked the 5min to the main road from the sanctuary and hailed another colectivo heading towards town.

Exceptional place. The owner is wonderful explaining all the types of hummingbird - she is very dedicated and has a beautiful space. We gave her more than the ticket price as it’s too cheap!

If you are a nature lover you cannot miss this place!! The owners are very kind and the circuit is kind of rustic/kitsch hehehe, but the main attraction are definitely the hummingbirds!! If you stay quiet for 10 seconds they approach right next to you...going from one flower to another, resting in a branch, Standing totally still in the air! This is the best way to learn about this little beautiful creatures! And you need to look for the Arica's local hummingbird, is almost extincted!
There are also a couple of extra animals in a farm at the end of the road, a very friendly lama and a couple of goats...
