One hour drive far from Siem Reap by tuk tuk and with less tourists than Chong Kneas, is a perfect place to see how people lives in a floating house and to take a break after the stressing visit at Angkor Watt with thousands of tourists.

The visit by boat takes you a couple of hours, enought to have an idea of the town without annoying to much their inhabitants.

There are no paved roads for the last 15 of the 25 km from Siem Reap. We hires a tuk tuk with a driver we knew but this was his first trip to Me Chrey and he was born in Siem Reap. Lonely Planet says it is the most recently discovered of the floating villages and has the least tourists, so that hooked us. It is on the maps of Siem Reap, 25 km from town and 19 from the airport.

But the tuk tuk ride lasted 90 minutes each way because the dirt roads become rougher and rougher and finally you are going like 5 kmh. You stop about 10 km from where the boats are and as there were only two of us we paid $50 to hire a boat. We got a young driver for what in Thailand I would call a dragon boat and off we went for an hour. From where the boats are it takes maybe 20 minutes to reach Me Chrey then you circle the town and they stop to try to see trinkets but we cut that short, then you reverse course and finally another 90 minutes back to Siem Reap.

You will need a surgical mask for dust if you don't already have one (pharmacies in Siem Reap sell them cheaply), plus water at least in the dry season (Dec-April). And don't do this if you mind a rough ride because you'll get knocked around a fair bit both on the tuk tuk and the boat. So is it worthwhile? Well, I'll bet you'll be the first on your street, maybe your city, to claim the bragging rights.

Three of us hired a tuk-tuk from Siam Reap to go out to the boats at Me Chrey.
Now that the secret is out and tourists are heading out there, they have started to rip people off, charging twenty dollars per person for a very short ride. It should have been 20 - 30 dollars for the entire boat.

Before we even got to the boats, were were stopped at an 'official office' and the man quickly wrote an invoice for sixty bucks. Sometimes you just pay, but I swore I would warn others about what is happening here. We came on the advice of somebody who had came out here months ago. I don't think the lake is worthwhile anywhere near Siam Reap, tourism has ruined it. I've heard there are good home stays near Pursat on the other side of the lake, or you could go just for a day. Hope this helps.

By the time the boat actually got out of the canal and onto the lake, we only had 45 minutes on the water, stopping at a 'crocodile farm' for twenty minutes, where they sold souvenirs, food and drinks, the usual rubbish.
