After shuffling through Ta Prohm with bus loads and the masses, we asked our rickshaw driver to take us to quieter temples only. He took us here and we visited the sight with our a handful of others. We were able to stop and let the atmosphere of the temple sink in. Of course there were also great photo ops inside and outside this temple. After this we moved to temples in the outer ring and stayed with lesser known temples. Our visit was perfect.

Although not far from the super crowded Ta Prohm, access to Ta Nei is down a dirt track and it is bypassed by most tourists. This temple is unrestored and sits in the middle of the jungle. You can hear the birds and insects and it has a raw, undiscovered feel to it. There were two elderly people leaving as we arrived so we had the site all to ourselves. The state of decay with the trees growing through it is amazing and you can imagine how some of the other bigger and more famous temples must have looked when they were first discovered. It is a very photogenic site. I loved Ta Nei, it’s one of my favourite temples and I’m so glad we took the detour off the main road to see it.

Not far from Ta Keo, is a Buddhist Temple built a bit later than Angkor Wat and some of the other temples. Possibly late 12th century. It is near the reservoir and has partially built walls. Some foliage and jungle life throughout the structure.

As others have said it’s a small temple with little restoration done. Biggest plus is it’s secluded, off the beaten track with few tourists (only two others when I visited) and a remote chance of spotting some gibbons (I didn’t) It’s one of those attractions that if you’re in the area go and see but I wouldn’t make the trek from Siem Reap only to see this.

Ta Nei is a buddhist temple. It is off the beaten track and down a dirt road for a kilometre. It is also very close to the Flight of the Gibbon attraction. What was special about this temple is the feeling of remoteness at the front of it and that it has only had partial restoration to stop it falling down.

We had the temple completely to ourselves and spent an hour just wandering around and exploring the jumbled ruin. If your looking for a temple that you can have to yourselves then Ta Nei is a good one to visit.

If you found the review useful I always appreciate a helpful vote.

Hidden deep in the jungle is this lesser known temple called Ta Nei. Built during the time of prolific temple builder Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century and dedicated to Buddha.

We would never have known about this temple had it not been for our guide Mr Lors (Cambodian bodybuilding champ).

There are no crowds. The temple is largely shaded so it’s cool. In a semi-ruined state. So great to see what temple looks like before restoration. There are blocks and lintels strewn inside which you have to clamber over to get around. Some nice carvings and lintels. Tree’s can be seen engulfing parts of the walls. Similar to Ta Prohm but much less crowded.
No shops or vendors.

Please ask your guide to stop here.
Some would rate this temple experience more highly than at the other more famous Angkor temples...

It is hard for me to pick a favorite temple (Bayon, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei, Angkor Wat and this temple were the ones I visited and found them all interesting and unique in some way) but if I had to pick one temple that combines interesting setting with little to no crowd, this would be it. Several of my friends said this was their favorite. It has a similar vibe to Ta Prohm but is much smaller. I was glad our tour guide (Luke with Peace of Angkor) included this one. It is shaded also so it is a good Temple to escape some of the heat of the day.

Ta nei temple is hidden from the usual circuits because its a little out of the way. It is however very much worth visiting! Considering the crowds at ta prohm you would be better off coming to ta nei for the jungle temple experience.

Spending 3 days with our guide Rethy from Angkor Private Tour Guide (see review) with his 4x4 land-cruiser, we were able to access all the difficult and seldom visited temple.

During our visit we were the only ones there, as coaches cant get down the dirt track, and most tuk tuk drivers and uncertified guides don't know where the hidden jungle temple is located. The temple was built during the reign of the prolific builder, King Jayavarman VII, in the twelfth century, a stone monument dedicated to the principles of Buddhism.

There has been no restoration as yet only preservation, the over growth of the area adds to the mystery, (however there are plans to clear the trees), the tree roots splitting open the temple stone, add to the overall atmosphere and mystery, it was fun getting in amongst it, awesome piccies to be had, this structure is a true ruin, not to be missed.

Once my tuk-tuk driver worked out I liked unrestored temples he told me of this one up a narrow dirt track where none of the coaches can get to it.It is an oasis of calm, totally unrestored but with plenty examples of intricate carvings round doorways and windows. There are also several large trees growing on and through the ruins (much better than Ta Prohm) It was lovely just to sit for a while and all you could hear was the sounds of the surrounding jungle,a little piece of heaven.Try this temple if you like this sort of thing I only know of one better,it is quite a way away but totally worth the journey,it"s name is CHAU SREI VIBOL,look it up on Trip Advisor and you will see of the very few that go there everyone raves about it.
