    Fascinating experience
An incredible insight into life on the river. It's about an hour from Siem Reap, so a bit further than the other two main floating villages that most tourists visit, but worth the extra distance due to this one being sustainable, with profits from tourism going straight back into the community instead of ro the tour companies. We (a school group) made our own way there on a private bus without booking ahead (we just turned up), and once at the checkpoint to enter the village, we hired three boats (US$22 per boat, fits about 10 people per boat) plus $2 per person. Very seamless process (thanks to our bus driver). Much cheaper than pre-booking through a middle-man. We spent an hour getting out to the lake, passed all the stilt houses etc, then spent a little time out on the lake before coming back in. An eye-opening experience of the reality of life of so many families in Asia. Well worth the visit.

    Great experience
Our tour guide organised a local tour guide for us to go to Tonle Sap Lake. We opted for one that was slightly further away from Siem Reap as it's slightly better than some of the closer floating villages. It took about an hour to drive to the lake and on arrival, we had a quick walk down the main road which has houses on stilts on either side. Our guide explained how they smoke the fish they catch to eat for the rest of the year. Walking along the road, looking at the height of the houses on the stilts, gives you a good impression of how much additional water there must be in the wet season - a good few metres more than there was when we were there. We headed to the main part of town and across to the dock and onto a boat. It was then about another 45 minutes on the boat, cruising through the waterways. We'd opted for this tour to be a sunset one, so the breeze was quite refreshing and we arrived at the main part of the lake to watch the sunset, which was really beautiful. It was dark when we reached the town we'd started the boat tour from but, again, the sun was still setting which looked amazing. Overall, a great experience to learn more about the wet season in Cambodia, with some beautiful scenery thrown in too.

The best part of the Siem Reap journey!
Experience life in Siem Reap’s Tonlé Sap lake like never before! Get a tour of the village and lake all whilst getting to know about how we can play a part to support the children and play a part in saving the environment! Proceeds go towards supporting the children at the school. Full transparency on cost and it’s more than a ‘tour’. It’s a learning experience!

    Wonderful experience
Loves out visit to the floating & stilted village. It’s a bit of a distance from Siam Reap but TOTALLY worth it. There is another floating village closer to Siam Reap but it’s literally add for tourists and not authentic. We used a wonderful guide called Hing +855 77 707 374. He drove us from our hotel and guided us all day. I’d highly recommend him for anything tours around Siam Reap. His English is excellent too.

    Authentic floating village
I read a book about this village. When I was in Siem Reap, I wanted to see the village with my own eyes. It was an amazing experience! Contrary to the other floating villages nearby, this one is still authentic. People actually live there and their lifestyle hasn't changed much since the first tourists arrived. I don't like tourist traps, so this was a wonderful, authentic experience that I can fully recommend. My group tour was the only one there when I visited. No other tourists. I booked through kompongkhleang . org. Go here, not Kampong Phluk.

It was a great way to see the real life of the locals but a bit pricey, $30 per person for just the boat ride. Nevertheless, the people were friendly and it was an authentic peak into their rural fishing village. Don’t miss the stop to see the baby crocodiles being raised by one of the locals.

I did prior research and choose this highly recommended floating villiage. I wanted to avoid the other very touristy floating villages like Chong Kneas where scams seem to be rampant and is alleged to be a tourist trap. We did this half day tour with Unique Tours and takes about 1 hour to reach from the heart of Siem Reap. Other “touristry” floating villages are located a lot closer to Siem Reap.

Im really glad we did as we hardly saw a tourist during our half day trip. We enjoyed the authentic non touristy experience and saw many local homes on stilts as well as a floating local school. These floating houses are made up fishing families. When there is a low level of water the locals relocate their floating homes further out onto the lake.

We loved the drive through the local area on the way to the river and visited local homes and stopped to see local village life including visiting a local market, and watching the locals smoke fish. Our trip also included a boat ride down the river to see Tonle Sap Lake.

We took a tuktuk from Siem Reap centre: about an hour and a half over good to very bad roads. Remember to take a scarf or something else to protect you from dust. But at least you get to see and experience the Cambodian life at the side of the road. I loved it! Finally, you enter a very poor village with wooden houses, for me it was unseen. The boat ride down the river to Tonlé Sap and on the Tonlé Sap lake is amazing. You get to see the floating village, with the school. We didn't make a stop to 75something or to donate something to the village, which is a very positive point! I've read that in some floating village they try to get as much money as possible out of tourists pockets... This was absolutely not the case! At the end of the boat tour, we were asked to give a tip to our very young (about 12y) captain, which we did without feeling bad. We are travelling with our three kids (12, 11 and 9). Total cost was: 30 usd for tuktuk, 75 usd for boattrip (3 x 25usd) and 5 usd tip.
pro: not touristic, you don't feel an intruder, very authentic, very honest, very real, the fee goes to the village
con: long trip from Siem Reap

Despite the fact that our tour guide was super friendly and informative, the trip felt like you were a spectator peering into the homes of the local people. It was explained to us to avoid giving children money as this encourages parents not to send their children further, however, as soon as you stepped off the boat you are approached by women who are trying to sell you school equipment / gather money. It was a really eye opening experience but it just didn’t sit well for me witnessing people taking pictures of people’s homes, the school etc. Like being at a zoo and spectating.

There is no fee to enter Kampong Khleang!!! Don’t take the organized tours! Go into the village and pay the villagers directly. They need the money and it’s a shame to support the scammers that trying to strong arm tourists at the entrance.

I rode there the other day by scooter from seim reap. There is a bottleneck on the road just before the village where some guys waved me down acting like they were officials. They said we could take a boat tour of Kampong Khleang for 28$ per person.

If you’ve traveled in Cambodia at all you know this is an insane amount of money for a boat ride. I can get from one end of the country to the other for that.

I told him I didn’t want the boat tour and I was just going to ride around and see what I could from the road. He told me we couldn’t do that and then tried to charge me 10$ per person to drive through the village.

I suspected he wasn’t there in any official capacity (which was later confirmed by the tourism office in Siem Reap) so we rode into the village anyway.

We were chased down by a different guy who proceeded to argue with us about paying the “fee” to enter the village. He was unable to produce any sort of valid idea or documentation to prove that he was working for the government or community in any official capacity. He kept saying that the money was for the community, but I suspect there is a little Mafia operation going on here.

I told him we would pay the fee to the villagers directly because I didn’t trust him and proceeded to give the money to a few locals that were nearby...Though I’d be willing to bet he came back and took the money from them later.

Anyway, the village is lovely and the people are amazing. We had a great little long tail boat tour from a local for 5$ and spent over an hour playing with the local children.

These people deserve your support, so please help by spending your money in the community and not with this little mafia.

Demand to see ID and paperwork! And if you suspect foul play, take pictures of the people in question and get them online.

After reading on TripAdvisor about the overpriced tours, I decided to go by myself from Siem Reap with a Tuk Tuk (he charged me USD25, which I considered good after talking to others charging around USD35) and before the village, there was this check point, where we had to stop and one of the guys said the boat tour costed USD30 per person. I refused to pay it and said I wanted to go to the village with my tuk tuk driver and from there I’d rent a boat so I could be sure the money stays with the villagers. I was forced to pay a USD5 fee entrance (the only answer for that was “government fee”, even they couldn’t provide any authentic document to prove it) otherwise I wasn’t allowed to go into the village. After all, I did pay it, but the tuk tuk driver said they told him not to let me rent any boat from the locals, so I just walked around the houses for 20 minutes, took some pictures and left.
To be honest, it wasn’t worth it. A holiday is the time when you supposed to be relaxed and not feel threatened. By trying to help the Kampong Khleang community, I got stressed, felt upset, and I don’t know if my money really goes to the villages.
Unfortunately, by going, we are just up to see their poverty and helping the lake mafia. Unless the government really gets involved to help those people by doing some concrete regulations for a real decent way into the village, I would suggest you to not waste your time and money.

Had a beautiful boat trip on the lake and river system, visiting the stilted and floating villages. It is such an eye opener for a city dweller like me. The serene silence and the pace of life driven by the water levels and moods of nature. I had a solo tour with our tour guide Tea, and I thoroughly enjoyed the outing. There is so much to see and I regretted only having one camera body with me, as I was busy changing lenses to get the best of the trip. Unfortunately these communities have challenges, as the fish levels have decreased and their livelihood is threatened. After the wonderful days visiting the temples, this trip was a welcome antidote and eye opener!

If you would like to take a trip down to Kompong Khleang, I would suggest you book a tour with COMMUNITY FIRST: KOMPONG KHLEANG FLOATING VILLAGE TOURS and I promise you will return with an memorable experience. Most importantly, the profit from this tour will be donated to the Bridge of Life School children.

Initially, I was put off by so many negative reviews about the floating village and the Tonle Sap tour where many tourists were scammed and their compassion were taken for granted. After doing an in-dept research, I found this non-profit organization tour which cost only 35USD for the entire trip and the proceeds are contributed back to their local education program.

I was so glad I made the right choice. It was one of the highlight of my Siem Reap vacation. We were picked up from our hotel at 2pm in a van and our guide, Paren was incredibly friendly, courteous and hospitable. I truly thank him for all his sharing about the people's life, culture and their daily challenges. We stopped halfway for an amazingly delicious sticky rice and also for some tantalizing mini donuts together with packets of taro chips to munch in the van.

It was an hour travel to Kompong Khleang and we took a boat to visit the school in the village. It was a one of a kind experience to see first handed how their people live here and our guide, being a local shared his life experience with us. The village feel so untouched and there weren't any tourist at all. Then we took the boat for a 20-30 mins ride towards the lake and stopped a while for sunset. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy but we were not dispaired by the scenery. When we returned to the village, the water receded so low that it was difficult to steer the boat (due to dry season). The night view were equally impressive. In the dark, I could witness the sky above were lit up with countless stars. A best way to end the day! And our guide was nice enough to drop us off at Pub Street.

Do bear in mind, the visit to the lake is subject to weather-6 months dry season and 6 month wet season. My trip was in March and it was the mid of their dry season.

The whole "eco-tourism" is a great scam. It is run by the mafia and the people of the village gets nothing out of it. For 15$ per person you can watch them as monkeys in a zoo.

Although the village is fascinating you can easily reach it by tuk tuk/bicycle/motorbike without any entrance fee and there if you want rent a whole boat from local.
Just go further after the point where "eco-tourism" pier is located. Don't believe in "road is flooded"/"the road ends" etc.

We visited Kompong Khleang with a local community based group called Bridge to Life which is funding a local school for children who cannot access a classroom during the wet season. We were picked up from our hotel by Paren who speaks excellent English. Paren used the journey out to the village to introduce us to sticky rice, some local markets and his firm belief in education . The floating village is a must see. It is both confronting and amazing at the same time. We later learned that Engineers without Borders (Australia) are working on a toilet system which will reduce issues with contaminated water. The tour was $35 each, which compares very favourably with some of the commercial prices, yet in this case your money is going back into the community. Paren provided fruits for afternoon tea and although the sunset was minimal, we returned from the village in in a calm twilight. Strongly recommend this tour - it is a world away from the up market hotels of Siem Reap.
