I booked the Prek Toal Bird Watching and Village tour for my other half’s 40th Birthday and was whilst I found the booking experience a little challenging, once we were picked up by our tour guide Sophal we were immediately at ease. Sophal and the team were genuinely lovely people, who seemed so happy to share their knowledge with us as well as happy to be able to spot certain birds and be able to share that experience. This tour felt genuine and gave us more of an insight into real life on a floating village. Parts of the bird tour were really tranquil and it was so nice not to be surrounded by lots of tourists like us! Sophal helped us spot the birds and provided information and images of each one that we found. We were enjoying the bird tour so much that we nearly missed lunch! We never felt rushed, we felt like we could ask any questions and felt very looked after. Especially as getting in and out of the boat was a little worrying for me, but I felt completely safe! Lunch at a local home was lovely, with Sophal sharing stories about the locals and about his life. All in all it was the best tour that we did whilst staying in Siem Reap. It completely made our trip! Some advice though, in January, I would bring some layers as it can get pretty cold on the boat early in the morning.

We researched the possible options for this trip online and by using the lonely planet suggestions because our emphasis was on the bird watching aspect of the experience.
Prek Taol tours and travel does not at first glance appear the cheapest but seemed to offer a genuine experience and we were not disappointed.
The whole trip from start to finish was just fantastic and we were so pleased we made that commitment to support this company.
The bird reserve is simply magical, serene, tranquil and the range of birds you see is just phenomenal . Our guide Shopal was just a brilliant spotter and the boatman was also on it. All sightings were unrushed and the time spent viewing the birds was genuinely dictated by us. At no time did we feel we moved on too quickly. We came across two other small boats in the reserve with no more than two persons on board. The local lunch and subsequent visit to the village and wider lake was also tasteful and uncommercial .
This was the most expensive excursion we invested in but we have absolutely no regrets. It was simply unque.

This tour exceeded our expectations in every way. We found them in the Lonely Planet Guide, made a reservation and....like magic, our guide showed up at 5:30 am (or something like that). It was a long day to go way up the Mekong to the bird sanctuary, floating village, etc. We were treated so professionally even though we were truly "out there". We ate a locally prepared lunch in one of the floating villages and did not get sick in spite of simple non-Western housing, We couldn't have had a better, more organized trip.

We are a family of 4 (2 teenage girls) backpacking around Cambodia in July. We chose to visit Perk Toal floating village, as wanted to get a better understanding of life on Tone Sap lake, but without all the tourist traps of the villages closer to Siem Reap. We chose to visit using Prek-Toal tours as they are a community group based in the village. Hoksan, our guide, was brilliant and clearly cares and wants to do best for his community and the natural environment which is his home.

It takes about 2 hrs to get to the village, initially by road then by river. For use this involved mini van pick up from our hotel, then motor rickshaw and boat…its all part of the fun. At the village we visited a variety of places, but particular highlight was spending time at the school where we got to talk with the pupils and were taught some Khmer, with our pronunciation creating a lot of amusement. We ended our tour in the village with lunch at one of the homestays, before traveling back to Siem Reap.

wanted to see a What a great day, Hoksan ,our guide, was brilliant and is insight and care for his community. From Siem Reap Peek Toal f

We spent a fascinating few hours on the river learning about this unique community. Our guide Sophal was extremely knowledgeable and informative. The tour felt respectful and not exploitative or invasive. We were lucky enough to get a glimpse into many aspects of life on the river - from seeing children making their way to and from school (and seeing inside the school itself), seeing wedding celebrations underway, and visiting the village pagoda. We came away with a true appreciation for the tour company and the floating village community.

We have been birding all across the world and have been lucky to see some wonderful birds and meet great guides , but I have to say this was one of the best . A genuine bird extravaganza in an authentic setting . Our guide SOPHAL was both knowledgable and great company , as well as being patient and humorous host . Would recommend to anyone seeking a great bird tour and adventure!

My wife and I went on the 2D/1N boat trip from Battambang to Siam Reap with Hoksan and stayed at the homestay in his floating village in Tonle Sap, and had an amazing time - truly one of our favorite experiences in Cambodia! It was a great balance of culture (visiting the oldest wat in the area, stopping by the local school to meet a class of schoolchildren, seeing the village crocodile farm, staying overnight with his relatives in the floating village, …) and birding/nature (we saw almost 50 species over the course of our time there and had a great birding day from the Tonle Sap Birding Sanctuary observation post with a view of hundreds of painted storks and spot-billed pelicans). Hoksan was a fantastic host and birding guide, and we’d highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in getting an authentic experience visiting a floating village community in Tonle Sap! It was also gratifying to know that the money spent goes towards supporting Hoksan’s non-profit and conservation work in the local community.

We had an amazing time visiting Prek Toal. Hoksan and his team were the most reliable and kind persons you can imagine. For us it was a great combination of culture (village with different stopps) and nature (visiting platform #53 with 40 different kind of birds in only one day. Hoksan even sent a list with the birds seen! One more reason to book the tour: all money goes into the development of the floating village Prek Toal. From my friend and me: 5 *****, 100 % recommendation.

An all-round superb day guided by Hoksan, who has a clear passion for both the wildlife and his village community. Despite not being the best time of year for bird watching here, still saw nearly 40 species. Enjoyed seeing several floating villages, touring around Prek Toal village & hearing about life on the river. Glad to know that much of the money spent on the tour goes back into the local community.

Hoksan from Prek Toal Tours Cambodia gave my partner and me a private tour of his village, Prek Toal floating village, over two days in July 2023. Our time with Hoksan was filled with authentic conversation and local experiences. We learned so much about what life is like for people in this floating village and other parts of rural Cambodia. If you are looking for an authentic local experience in rural Cambodia with a local guide, we highly recommend Prek Toal Tours. Your money will go directly towards the local community, as Hoksan hires local drivers and other vendors, and he also leads a local NGO, Prek Toal Moving Ahead, that works to improve education, environment, and food for the Prek Toal community. Be aware that the homestay is basic with a shared bath and fan rather than AC, and the boat is basic with no toilet - you will have an authentic experience, not a luxurious one.

Hoksan customized our tour to our needs. On the first day, he and his driver picked us up in Siem Reap, and we took a motor boat ride on the Sangkae River to the Prek Toal floating village where he lives. 1500 families live in Prek Toal, and they all make their living by fishing. We visited the local school and temple with Hoksan, and he took us by boat to the Tonle Sap lake to watch the sunset. We finished the day with dinner at the homestay, where Hoksan’s extended family shared their home with us.

The second day, we rose at dawn to see fishing and other morning activities near the village and had breakfast at the homestay before taking the six-hour motorboat ride with Hoksan and his driver to Battambang. Hoksan provided lunch for us along the way, and we visited another important temple nearby. It was a really beautiful ride on the Sangkae as we passed floating villages and rode among the water hyacinths on the river.

Again, if you are looking for an authentic local experience in rural Cambodia with a local guide, we highly recommend Hoksan and Prek Toal Tours. We learned so much from our time with him, and we experienced the lush beauty of rural life in Cambodia on the Tonle Sap.
