About
Sombai is a sweet home-made liqueur from Siem Reap. Sombai bottles are painted and decorated by hand, making each of them a unique piece and an amazing souvenir. We also have a non-alcoholic range of products under the brand name "Joe's" including quality spices, aromatised sea salts, peppers and alcoholic jams. You can come for a "workshopping" including a free tasting, visit of the workshop and some shopping every day from 8am to 8pm. The Workshop is open daily. Otherwise, we are available for free tasting and for retail sale at our stalls at the Made in Cambodia Market (King's Road) every day from noon to 10pm.

We tried Sombai at a restaurant on our visit to Siem Reap last year and were thrilled to discover that we could actually visit their workshop for a tasting so when we decided to go back this year I emailed and organised a private tasting.

We were warmly greeted and shown around the workshop and all the processes were explained to us before we relaxed and tasted all their different flavours.

It was hard to narrow it down and pick just a couple of flavours to take home with us but we chose the pineapple and coconut as our favourite and also the lemon and lemongrass. We also took home some Khmer pepper, Khmer curry and Amok spices to use at home.

Each bottle was placed in a beautiful woven basket to keep it safe to bring home.

I am looking at the beautiful handpainted bottles as I write this review and it makes me miss Cambodia even more!

A really lovely, different experience to enjoy in Siem Reap and the handpainted bottles are a gorgeous gift or souvenir to take home with you.

See you next year, Joelle!

:)

My bf and I decided to drop by for some wine tasting, not knowing that it was recommended to call beforehand so make sure you give them a call to arrange. The owner was so accommodating despite our surprise visit! I have to say the cleverly infused rice wines are amazing and you have to try it to believe it! I loved all the flavours particularly the lemon lemongrass and green tea orange!

Dear Charmaine, Thank you for taking the time to write us a nice review! Since the Sombai Lounge/Shop is in our house, it is indeed recommended to call beforehand as we are sometimes taken up by deliveries or organisation of events and so on. But if you happen to reach our place without prior booking and we are at home, we will happily greet you to an impromptu tasting. What makes our Infused Rice Wine different is the 'secrets' from the islands which turns this naturally not-very-pleasant alcohol into a delicious spirit, smooth and easy, in fact, too easy to drink beverage (to quote most of our customers). Lemon-lemongrass is our best-seller!!! Joëlle & Lionel

I cannot tell you how much I enjoy the infused rice wine Sombia produces. I have tried every flavor and each is as good as the last. Everyone will find a flavor they love. Lemon-Lemongrass, Green Tea-Orange, Ginger-Red Chili, Pineapple-Lime, just to name a few, make amazing cocktails.

The hand painted bottles and scarf wrapped caps are amazing and each is unique, making them great gifts for people back home. There are three sizes available, giving you the perfect size for your home or a friend.

If you want the best locally produced rice wine in Siem Reap, you absolutely must try Sombai.

Dear customer, Always a pleasure to provide our drinks to people who are as passionate as us about Sombai. Indeed, everyone will surely find something that fits his/her tastebud among our 8 flavours which range from more bitter and less sweet (lemon-lemongrass/green tea-orange) to the more dessert kind for the sweet-tooth (coconut-pineapple, our latest flavour). Do come around next time you are in Cambodia as we have a new flavours in the pipeline... Joelle & Lionel

I first bought some Sombai spirits to bring back to the US as gifts, based on the beautiful hand-painted bottles and positive comments I had heard around town. The bottles are gorgeous, and people loved them, but we were amazed at how much we loved the product itself - even more than we expected!

There are lots of wonderful flavors to choose from, and you can make delicious cocktails, though we prefer to sip it cold and enjoy it all on its own. I keep discovering new favorite flavors and going back for more.

It's a great choice for gifts or for enjoying yourself, and there are wonderful friendly people who will guide you through a tasting so you can choose your favorite flavors. Don't miss it, whether you live here or you're just passing through Siem Reap!

Yes, people come to Siem Reap for Angkor Wat but there is more to see any do and tasting some local Sombai is an excellent addition to your trip. We visited when the power was out, so wasn't sure it was open as the street was in darkness. However someone came out to greet us and we tried Sombai (and of course bought) a few bottles to bring home with us. You get to try a wide variety for free and then buy the flavours you like. There is no sales pitch or pressure to buy anything; we found the people working there warm and friendly, just like the rest of Cambodia.

We have emergency lights (very handy). Our staff will always make it a must to provide the best moment and answer your questions to the best of their abilities. We offer a wide range of products from liqueurs, alcoholic jams, hand-painted fridge magnets, coffee cups, notebooks and many more. We hope you will recommend us to your friends and family coming to Siem Reap soon. Joelle & Lionel

$4 tuktuk from hotel led me to this wonderful operation nearish to the old market. New employee and incredibly sweet girl named Sara gave me a wonderful tour of the upstairs infusing area then provided a tasting of the 8 infused rice wine flavors - most of them very tasty!! Then came the jams and shopping of course. 100ml bottles that are safe for carry on were hand painted by the artist up stairs and run about $9 each. Jams about $2.50. They also have a kiosk by the old market. Great experience and a gift opportunity.

We booked a session (US$7 per person) and were picked up at our hotel by tuk tuk and taken to the shop. Upstairs you get to see how the flavours are infused in big jugs for 3 months, what goes into them for the different flavours. You also get to see the artists painting the bottles. Back downstairs (be warned the stairs are very steep and not for the fragile - but you don't have to go up there).
We sat and tasted about 8 different infused Sombai, then moved on to a few pepper infused ones. Then we tried some jams and chutneys made from the fruit that had been used in the infusions. So they have a tiny amount of alcohol in them. Some of these were amazing! The tomato and kampot pepper one would be absolutely fabulous with cheese.
We purchased the 4 pack of chutneys - choosing which ones we wanted included, a lovely painted bottle of ginger and chilli infused Sombai and a bottle of Khmer curry spices.
These all make wonderful souvenirs for us and gifts for friends.
We were then taken back to our hotel (or anywhere else we wanted to be dropped).
A lot of hotels and tour desks don't know about this experience, so make sure you find it then let them know they have to have it for their guests.
Some people think Siem Reap is just the temples but things like this make it a much broader and interesting experience.

Dear Customer, A big thank you for your encouraging review! We have different packages (for different prices) of tasting, pick-up, cocktail classes and so on. Once you reach the workshop, 11 flavours of infused liqueurs await and 5 alcoholic jams tasting as well as other products (hand-painted cups, silk products, khmer spices, pepper etc). Our set of inside stairs are steep indeed as our workshop was a typical Khmer house that we transformed, luckily we have a set of normal stairs outside for those who prefer a less "adventurous" climb. We have been around for 6 years already and on top of Trip Advisor rating for a while but some places are not aware of our existence, this is why we appreciate any recommendations to your friends and relatives who come to visit Siem Reap. Best Regards, Joëlle & Lionel

We went with a couple of friends and had lots of fun. Friendly and nice staff, cosy atmosphere, awesome liquors.
The pick up from the Hostel and back was uncomplicated and as the tasting place is in the city the ride was only 10 minutes.
The whole tasting was about 1 1/2 hrs, including 18 different liquors and 5 different marmelades. As well as little snacks and water to neutralize the taste.
Afterwards one can buy the tasted things.

Our tasting session at Sombai was informative and fun. The salesperson spoke good English and showed us the large glass bottles filled with liqueurs at varying stages of maturation. The flavour combinations were unusual but so amazing and it was hard to choose a favourite. The bottles are handpainted (but unpainted bottles can also be purchased). These make great gifts. We loved the green tea + orange combination, as well as raisin + white pepper. The entire range is for tasting (about 12 different flavours). They also make alcoholic jams which can be tasted too.

The Sombai shop has a great sales tactic - ply you with the tastiest rice wines and alocholic jams and then let you loose on their products. The tasting had a great range of flavours and gave a great opportunity to see which flavours you liked the most.

After buying a large amount of drinks and jams, we were given a few freebies and even handmade denim bags to carry the bottles in. Prices weren't too cheap if you are a budget traveller, but there are still small items you can buy as gifts or souvenirs.

Highly recommend the store if you want a quick visit to a novel place that sells very attractive products.
